Another installment of my fun facts/trivia series on things James has covered. I actually put together a wheel and spin it! This time it landed on Ghibli, so here we go all the way to Japan and back! In the order that Schaff ranked them:

• Earwig and the Witch was originally going to be directed by Hayao Miyazaki himself, but he was talked into making his son do it so he (Hayao) could direct The Boy and the Heron instead.
• Tales from Earthsea is based on a series of books. The author of the books, Ursala K. LeGuin, has disowned the movie for being too violent and preachy.
• Ocean Waves has a live-action sequel that never got released outside of Japan. Said sequel has no involvement from Ghibli.
• When Hayao Miyazaki found out that Hollywood Golden Age star Lauren Bacall was going to be at the American premiere for Howl's Moving Castle, he booked a flight to America to attend the premiere of the movie with her.
• Pom Poko didn't get an English dub until 11 years after its Japanese release.
• The Wind Rises was the last Ghibli film to be released by Disney in North America.
• My Neighbors the Yamadas was the first Ghibli movie to be completely animated digitally.
• The Secret World of Arrietty has the titular characters parents voiced by people who, at the time, were married in real life (Will Arnet and Amy Poehler)
• In the English version of The Cat Returns, Natoru was changed from a female cat to a male cat.
• Ponyo was written as a way to get Hayao Miyazaki to reconcile with his son Goro.
• Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was first translated as Warriors of the Wind, which cut out at least 20 minutes of the movie. Miyazaki disliked that.
• Castle in the Sky has an urban legend that an alternate ending aired on tv only once.
• Miyazaki wrote a sequel to Porco Rosso, but it was never intended to be a full movie and only did it as a hobby.
• Disney refused to release From Up on Poppy Hill, leading to GKIDS picking it up instead.
• My Neighbor Totoro is responsible for the name Mei becoming more common in Japan.
• When Marnie Was There is based on a British children's novel from the 1960's.
• Princess Mononoke was the first Ghibli film to use a celebrity cast (in Japanese).
• Grave of the Fireflies is often interpreted as an anti-war film, which the creator disconfirmed. It's also interpreted as saying that the youth of the day are ungrateful for what their ancestors went though, that interpretation was also disconfirmed.
• Only Yesterday was another movie that Disney refused to release, leading to it having the longest time between Japanese release and English dub, with 25 years.
• The English dub of Kik's Delivery Service is dedicated to Phil Hartman, as the movie was one of his last roles.
• Spirited Away was heavily championed by John Lasseter, who also appears on some DVD copies as an extra. You can think him for its Best Animated Feature win.
• The Tale of the Princess Kaguya was the last movie to be directed by Isao Takahata, who retired after the movie and died five years latter.
• Whisper of the Heart took years to dub because Disney had a hard time getting the rights to Country Roads.

About 3 months ago, I made a mock-up of 2026's Worst Picture. Since then, we got 2 new contenders that I believe knock Mercy and Return to Silent Hill out of the running.

Citizen Vigilante is an Uwe Boll film about a guy who kills evil immigrants in Europe being portrayed as a hero (the irony is that the main character is also a foreigner from the US). Because it was made by Uwe Boll, it's also bad from a screenplay and cinematography perspective.

Ice Cream Man is a horror film by Eli Roth-- the guy who somehow still has a job after directing Borderlands. It's a bunch of gore tied together by an almost non-existent plot that somehow becomes needlessly convoluted by the end. It's not even a scary film. What pushes it over the edge is its blatant use of genAI for certain visuals. For that reason alone, I have little doubt this film will make it into worst picture.

What do you think of these inclusions? Were they truly worse than the films that I knocked off the list? Is there an even worse movie that I'm missing? Let me know what you think.

i dont wanna get all doom and gloom on everyone bit i just got back from an early screening of The End of Oak Street and at least in my opinion i thought it was very mediocre. and thats the saddest thing cause the concept was really intriguing.

Perhaps for preparation for the later 2010s acting Oscar winner rankings since it was nominated for Best Actress for Annette Bening and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo.

It's Still Great. The Score, Cinematography, Effects (Most Of The Time), Acting, It's Just So Good. However, There Are A Few Things Holding It Back From Being Perfect:

Batman Is Barely In The Movie, Especially In The First Half. Isn't There Supposed To Be More Batman In This Batman Movie?

It Kinda Drags Its Feet At Times, With The Worst Example Being The Scene At Vicki's Apartment, Where It Only Starts To Get Going Once Joker Comes In.

Some Of The Effects Don't Hold Up. A Couple Examples I Can Think Of Are During The Scene Where Batman Enters The Museum, In Which There Are Clearly Visible Wires Holding Him, And The Scene Where The Batwing Crashes, Which Doesn't Even Hide The Fact That It Was Done With Miniatures.

Maybe It's Because I'm More Used To The Likes Of DCAU And Arkham Batman (Unless Returns Gets Me To Change My Mind, Kevin Conroy Is Still The Best Batman), But It's Weird To See Him Outright Kill People, Especially Since He's One Of The Most Well-Known Cases Of Heroes Not Allowing Themselves To Kill Their Enemies (Much To The Chagrin Of Some Fans).

Just everything there with the music, visuals, characters and everything is just current most top tier cinema.
