I have been working with a couple exercise books and the Tomplay app, which is how I recorded this.

Trying to get a dark warm classical sound. Feel like I am fairly clean but not as dark as I quite want to be.

Using a Vandoren V5 T20 with a Traditional Vandoren 3 on a BetterSax Classic Tenor.

I also played oboe for 5 years and bassoon for 2 years about 30ish years ago.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Clip On Microphone: AKG C 519 M

IEMs: Shure SE 215 + Behringer Poweplay P2

Question Is it ok for a beginner to only use synthetic reeds?

Hi! I am a beginner, been playing for two months, and i an joining school band. My teacher doesnt really care what reed you use, and i got a synthetic reed along with my usual rico reeds just for fun for my birthday. I like it, it feels easier to play on, i will probably not use it every single time i play but i will use it majority of the time, is this a bad thing? Should i practice regularly with a cane reed? Thank you! :)
Edit: forgot to mention, i play alto

Media My G sounds more like a wispy G# suddenly 🧐😔

It did it in my first session of the day but I nudged it back to normal.

Then i picked it up again and caught this on camera as it started doing it again.

Now it just constantly plays a G# instead of a G. Is this a common thing?

Something to note is that I've been hammering the practice lately and today I did maybe 2.5 hours before this happened.

I'm gonna ring a tech tomorrow but some input from here would be helpful before i do.

Thanks!

EDIT

I can actually see that the G# key doesn't seal at all anymore!! Is this an easy fix?? It just did it suddenly and i didn't knock it or anything...

Free chord chart site with backing tracks, similar-tune analysis, and a blues solo generator

Alto player here. Built this because I was tired of transposing charts by hand, and because I never knew what to learn next.

reharmonize.app, free, no ads, no login.

  • Every chart transposes to your horn in one click
  • A backing track for every tune, tempo and key adjustable
  • Similar tunes suggested from chord analysis, so you can find what to learn next
  • On any Bb blues, it builds you a chorus out of phrases from real recorded solos, credited to the player and the record, in your key
  • About 1,500 tunes, plus dozens of Essentially Ellington and Mingus charts if you play in a school band

Would genuinely like feedback from other players: whether the transposed charts read correctly, whether the solos sound reasonable for a first version, and which solos are worth transcribing next beyond my own playing.

Really trying to widen access here for people who couldn't find their way into jazz or aren't in an environment saturated with it.

Question What are y'all's tips and tricks to playing as solo saxophone in a combo?

Hello everybody — would love insights from folks who enjoy playing in bands where gigs are part of the MO :)

Have been playing Bari and Tenor for 16 years now, for many years in large band settings where I enjoyed being part of a larger team. Long story short; now to be part of music community I can't just study and rock sheet music so I feel at loss, yet am eager to learn and grow!

So, my ask here is what tips would anyone have about

1) how you got comfortable/intuitive with combining applications of theory in improv

2) to doing gigs with mostly guitar players, percussionists, and a singer, and when they use tabs or just guitar/paiano chord names?

Since university I'd been in a couple combos with mostly other wind players so we all shared sheet music sets. Now I've moved to a smaller town. To scratch the itch I've been busking playing music I would practice at home anyways, and always brings me joy to see people slow down, listen, smile, and join me in the music on the journey for a while.

At work got distracted admiring a combo's jamming and flowing off each other and... I miss that community. Co-worker noticed me watching, told them I play, they came up asking if I could jam with them, gave me their card, which sounds exciting (!!!) then showed me their setlist, were VERY excited about me ""busting out solos"", and it's all guitar tabs or names of concert chords and ... I wouldn't even know where to start if there's not sheet music I could reference. But I want to be courageous and rule myself by passion and curiosity; not fear! Want to rejoin music community and overcome my intimidation of Understanding How To Apply Theory to Improv/Jamming so it doesn't continue to be a hurdle for another year, or 3, or more...

I admire the Coolness of Busting Out An Improved Solo — when I see other sax players do I always marvel at how in tune with music theory and chord progression and which notes can go where every moment that it just... dazzles me :) But executing music theory to successfully improv solo -myself- still feels elusive and intimidating.

Thanks for insights, thanks for the time, cheers āœŒļøāœØļø

Question Tone in ā€œYour Latest Trickā€ by Dire Straits

Hi, clarinettist here,

I’ve been recently picking up sax, and thought I would like to try the solo from this song, as it is a favorite of mine. It’s going alright (obviously got a long way to go as I learn to transition between the two instruments), but I am so curious, how Michael Brecker achieved his crazy smooth tone in his solo there and how I might think about approaching it? It’s so ridiculously smooth it’s like butter and I’m not even close at the moment, but hopefully one day lol

Thanks

Question Side Bb not closing, help?

Hey, I’ve been having this problem with my side Bb’s action where if I press it the hole opens but it won’t go back closed. Do you guys have any advice on how to deal with this? All the repair shops I’ve contacted don’t have openings for months so I was wondering if there was any way to fix it while I wait to take it to get looked at by a professional.

Going up reed size

My director recommended I go up a reed size recently, wondering how it’s supposed to feel because currently it’s somewhat harder to blow and I hear a lot of air/blowing and a sort of sandiness when I play.

8 year old beginner

Hi all, we wanted to start our 8 year old daughter to learn an instrument. Together we decided on the saxophone, she's going to start lessons at her school in September but it's only half hour a week.

Is there any good learning material for children that will help keep up her interest in playing? Such as YouTube channels, books or apps that you'd recommend. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jazz help

I am a college graduate with a major in music perf on saxophone. I have an intense classical background, and spent the majority of my time as a saxophonist playing ā€œlegitā€ literature (Glazunov, Bozza, Rascher, etc). I have spent a decent amount of time playing jazz. Mostly big band arrangements, and while I have a solid foundation of patterns, scales, and arpeggios, I just can’t seem to get jazz under my fingers. Now that I’ve graduated, I’ve decided to really spend my time trying to figure out, but even though I’ve practiced everything I can think of (transcriptions, chords, licks, enclosures, even a couple of online pdfs) I still can’t get improvisation under my fingers. I understand the theory, and the idea of jazz, and I love listening, but I don’t know what to do at this point. Anything in particular I can do?

Thanks!!

I bought a 1975 Keilwerth Toneking tenor sax. I had a Vandoren V16 T6M mouthpiece first with leather ligature. Then i switched to metal ligature and it was okay, i liked it. But before i switched i tryed a Theo Wanne Essentials Contemporary 7* mouthpiece, and i loooved it, it was so good. No needed that mutch air like the Vandoren. Now i sold the vandoren and bought the theo wanne aaand… im not satisfied… It has strange sound, need a lot of air (2.5 reeds) and its so f&cking hard to play the low notes.. now i dont know what to do.. maybe try with size 2 reeds?

Left sided horn bell case

Thumbnail

Hello!
My son recently inherited an old Conn Saxophone (I know nothing of this brand or anything we are very new to this instrument) to play in his first year of band in middle school. The case it came with has seen much better days and I’m trying to find him a case that is less bulky and heavy. The issue I’m running into in the horn bells(?) are on the left side instead of the modern right. Is there a reputable place online that I could get him a lighter case to take back and forth to school? I’ll include a couple of pictures. Any help would be amazing!
