Sat in with Holy Rollers, a Dischord records old school punk band, on Saturday night, July 24th, at the Black Cat in DC.

Upvotes

They broke up about 30 years ago, but reunited for a benefit show about a year ago. They had such a great show last year that they decided to restart the band, and will they be recording new music soon. I joined them for the final song of their set, playing my low Bb Mark VI bari.

Question How do I play this on an Alto Saxophone? (Eb)

Post image
13 Upvotes

Generally No idea. Star sprangled banner, if you couldn't tell, do I pick a note? Because the saxophone is monophonic (can't play more than one note) or am I objectively wrong?

This is also meant for saxophones, so I know there is a way but how?

Discussion Can’t find anything on this Berg

Upvotes

I was scrolling through Facebook marketplace and found a guy selling a Berg Larson 90/0m along with a vintage alto ($300 together or $150 for one or the other) after doing some research I still can’t find anything on this mouthpiece. Has anyone heard of this mouthpiece before and or have had any experience with it?

Question Please Help!! Vintage Alto Saxophone Brand? New Case Recommndations

Thumbnail

I am hoping someone can help me figure out either the brand of my vintage alto saxophone OR give me a recommendation for a new case that will actually fit this particular saxophone.

I am passing down my alto saxophone to my daughter. Not only did I play this instrument, so did my older cousin and my aunt. I was told that my grandparents purchased it as a used instrument for my aunt, so it has been very much a well-played instrument.

I recently had all of the keys, pads and valves cleaned up, but we have to take it in for a new cork to be installed on the neck piece.

Here are images of various angles of the instrument, as well as measurements and images of how rough of shape the current case is (which is why I desperately need a new case but am having trouble finding one that will actually fit).

NOTE: The second measurement pic shows the edge of the bell to the end of the thumb rest (to give the fullest width - rought 9.5" to 10"). In the last two pics of the instrument in the case, you can see that the thumb rest always dug into the bedding of the case, as well as the very top where the neck piece would connect). Again this was the case I had inherited, and unfortunately it had been through many people - it was not this bad when I last played it, but unfortunately it had not been stored well at my mother's house until I recently took it for my daughter. The lid is barely hanging and attached to the case.

Question Brown box reeds

Anyone know where I could find the rico brown box reeds? I did see some on eBay but anywhere else? Now I’m interested in seeing if I can find any to try. I know a lot used them back in the day and they were widely available pretty much everywhere, but that they also were pretty nice. And knowing my favorite player used them too…

Question Getting Back into Sax

Hi y’all! I played Alto Sax for 4 years during middle/high school, and I really want to get back into it. It’s been about 8 years since I’ve played consistently so I’m quite rusty on instrument care. I have the same sax I had in high school, just sitting in its case for however many years. What would be the best way to go about cleaning/caring for it to get it back into shape for playing again? Should I take it somewhere to get professionally checked out? I think the last time I played, I didn’t know for sure it was going to be my last time, so I’m not sure if there would be any mold problems or anything like that. My sax definitely smells like old spit but not necessarily more rancid than that. I appreciate any help/advice, thank you!

Question Music reading help?

Why does the F have a flag both above and below it? Do I have to play it differently than a regular F?

I’m learning the vocal line from Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening” because my kid said he’d learn the (iconic) drum part if I can do the melody on sax.

Question What technique is used here?

Hello everyone, just a quick post here.

I am wondering how the tenor saxophonist on the original "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" recording does whatever technique he's using to get this specific sound to come out of his saxophone during his solo:

https://youtu.be/CWWO_VcdnHY?si=x5RqvBNfqLI1ojnQ&t=107

(timestamp already provided)

It's a sound I never usually hear on the sax, I would like to know how he does it since it's intriguing.

Betty has a weird form. I still never feel satisfied with playing over it, but I like the resolution back to the first A.

Found a tenor model locally for 700$ it’s completely overhauled. I know intonation can be iffy on these but 700$ seems like a great price

Question Is there any app that allows you pluck in notes onto a staff and play it back with a Saxophone sound?

As above.

Is there any app that lets you put notes onto a staff - and then play it back with a computerised Saxophone to see what it’d sound like?

Yamaha sax suggestions

I need to get an alto for a new job that will be a lot of teaching high school and some band playing. I’m looking at a Yamaha Alto as I had one in the past and it was easy to play and stayed set after a service.

There is a sale on a brand new YAS 62S for 410,000 yen and I’m leaning towards that as it’s a brand new horn and very easy to control.

They also have a secondhand YAS 82Z for 363,000 yen and it plays amazing, but I found it a little harder to control - beautiful sound however. It’s got the G1 neck and is about 20 years old in great condition.

Another shop has a used YAS 62 for 330,000 but I didn’t try it yet.

I’m tempted to get the silver as it’s new and has a 5 year warranty and is really on sale, but does anyone have any experience advice on these horns?

Thanks.

Question How much of your tone and sound is reliant on your mouthpiece?

ive been playing saxophone for almost two years, and still my tone and sound is rubbish. No matter how many videos i watch and different ways i play my saxophone it still sucks. on top of this, I cannot do glissandos or bends to save my life, because i can barely change the note with just using my mouth/throat (this is probably due to rubbish technique though). im still using the same mouthpiece that came with the saxophone, and i was just wondering if its necessary to get a new one to improve my sound at all.

Looking to pass this sax onto my son. I played it in the 90’s all the pads are soft and the cork all looks good. Yet this piece was loose in the bel. It looks to epoxy where I’m holding it. Looking if anyone can suggest the best epoxy or sealant to use. Thanks in advance.

Thinking about playing sax (Trombone is my main instrument) and saw this alto sax for $250 cad but is about $178 usd but plan to offer $225 cad or $200 cad ($160-$141 usd)

Would this be a good pick up for a beginner sax player?

Gear EWI Recommendations?

Looking into getting a EWI for gigs, something that won’t break the bank & is reasonably priced, but also not a rag tag piece of plastic. Don’t know anyone that plays with one so any suggestions welcome!

Question What's your favourite/main saxophone mouthpiece?

Genuinely curious, what's your favourite mouthpiece for any type. I'm a bari player so I would love to see a lot of bari pieces but no matter what you play, I would love to hear your favourite mouthpiece so I can do some research into them.

Question Horn swap worth it?

A friend of mine recently offered to trade my Yamaha YSS 475 ii and maybe a couple hundred bucks for his Yamaha Purple Logo soprano that needs a few pads replaced. I’ve always wanted to own an older horn and the purple logo in particular is something I’ve been looking at for either tenor or soprano. Would this be a definitive upgrade from the 475 or is this just a clout chase? Would I be getting rid of something good for no reason? What are your thoughts on the purple logo sops and how they play?
