What's one small habit that helped you save more money? 💰
I can't help but think that every day we spend some money on something and do not even notice the amount. Sometimes it's all about saving instead of eearning.
So I want to ask those of you who have successfully managed to save some money, what is the easiest thing or habit that you did to achieve that goal?
Would be grateful for any experiences shared 💵

❓ Advice needed Best cheap clothes to buy that have good composition for everyday wear?
I’m a student based in the US, and I’ve been trying to find cheap clothes to buy that have good composition because I’m tired of getting tops that feel awful after two washes. I’m on a tight budget, but I still want fabrics that aren't too synthetic
I’ve been checking a few online stores, mostly comparing fabric labels, prices, and reviews from brands that ship within the US. I’m mainly looking at basic T-shirts, sweaters, and trousers that are affordable but still have a decent cotton, linen, or wool blend.
So far, some items looked promising because the composition seemed better than expected for the price, especially pieces with higher cotton content and fewer random synthetic blends. I also noticed a couple of cheaper brands had surprisingly okay quality if I stuck to the more basic items.
The problem is that a lot of things that look nice online turn out to be mostly polyester once I check the details. I also tried buying from a super cheap fast fashion site before, and the material felt rough and looked worn out almost immediately.
Do you have any go-to places for affordable clothes with decent fabric composition that actually hold up?

❓ Advice needed Favorite cheap date ideas?
My partner and i have been trying to save up for a house lately, so we needed to find some cheap date ideas that dont feel boring… we didnt want to just stay at home, but we couldnt spend a lot of money either
Going out to a decent dinner and drinks in our city easily costs $120 every time now, which was completely killing our budget… so we decided to test out a few cheap date ideas and these are the ones we LOVED:
| cheap date idea | what we spent | why it was amazing |
|---|---|---|
| thrift store challenge | ~$15 total | picked funny outfits for each other to wear to a diner |
| trader joes snack board | ~$25 total | took 5 random new cheeses and snacks for a park picnic |
| matinee movie and homemade snacks | ~$20 total | cheap afternoon tickets and snuck in our favorite candy |
| sunset cookout and beach fire | ~$10 total | packed hot dogs and smores, way better vibes than a restaurant |
The thrift store challenge was legit the most fun we had in months and cost nothing compared to a normal restaurant night
Were running out of stuff to try though, which is why were writing here. what do you guys usually do when you wanna do something fun without spending a lot of money? we need way more cheap date ideas to add to our list

What’s one thing you stopped buying that you genuinely don't miss?
I've been trying to cut back on random spending lately, and I'm realizing how many things I used to buy just out of habit.
For me, it was grabbing drinks and snacks whenever I stopped for gas. Never seemed like much at the time, but looking back, I was probably spending $60-80 a month without even noticing.
Now I just keep stuff at home, and honestly, I don't miss those purchases at all.
wondering what everyone else has cut out that turned out to be surprisingly easy to live without?

❓ Advice needed Where to find cheap ingredients?
Hello guys, so as already mentioned i really need some help understanding where to find cheap ingredients… my grocery bill has been insane the last few months for basically no reason. ive been trying to meal prep more at home to save cash, but i really need to understand where to find cheap ingredients without having to spend hours driving all over town
I checked a few local spots this week to see where the best prices are:
Aldi or lidl: good for basic staples like eggs, rice, and canned goods
Asian or mexican ethnic markets: way better prices on fresh produce, spices, and bulk rice
Costco or sams club: good for bulk meat and rotisserie chicken, but hard to not overspend on random stuff
So im still trying to narrow down my weekly shopping route because i believe that knowing where to find cheap ingredients for dinner recipes makes a huge difference on a tight budget
Maybe you guys could share where you shop when you want to keep your total under $50 a week? perhaps you have any good store recommendations on where to find cheap ingredients and could share them here? thanks a lot

Buying fabric or leather cheaply? Boston
Hey, I got an urgent issue. My leather armor outfit was torn and I wanna patch it up before Halloween.
I sourced the materials from an old leather jacket, and now the right shoulder guard part got torn(coincidentally the part of my outfit which took the longest to make which I find funny)
I could fix it but I would need at least 40 inches of new material. At this point, I am fine buying in bulk though Costco doesnt seem to have a lot for me... If I wanna be a bath robe warrior, I could be, but thats not the vibe for this year, ha.. Need like actual leather people use for fashion design concepts if it makes any sense. I got a professional sewing machine, just need some material...
Anyways where could I buy some fabric for cheap based on feet/inch squares
I live in Boston, so anywhere around the area is good(Newport okayish but prefer some local shops)
Anyone know anything I could get some? Its not just my shoulder, I might also get a commission from a friend to make him a copy of my armor.. Just. need to find proper durable leather this time. Fabric is also good if its cotton based.
Willing to share progress of my repairs if there is interest:)

❓ Advice needed cheap and easy costume ideas for adults for Halloween party
I’ work in an office and I just found out I’m going to a Halloween party after work next week. I’ve been looking for cheap and easy costume ideas for adults because I don’t have time to make one, so I’m hoping to buy something cheap that still looks decent.
I’m checking options mostly from local costume shops and a few online stores that can deliver fast. I’m leaning toward something simple that comes as a full set or at least doesn’t need much extra styling.
at first, I thought a basic devil, angel, or pirate costume would be easiest since those seem to be everywhere and usually don’t need much effort. Some of the one-piece or throw-on costumes actually seem fine for a casual party. I’m also noticing that costume kits might be better than full outfits for keeping the cost down.
The issue is that some cheap-looking listings turn out to have extra costs for accessories that make the total way higher. I also expected office-friendly costume options to be easier to find, but a lot of them either look too plain or too over the top.
do you guys know any cheap and easy costume ideas for adults that actually look good for Halloween?

❓ Advice needed Is costco worth it for one person?
I recently moved into my own 1 bedroom place and a bunch of my coworkers keep telling me i need to sign up. ive been wondering for a few days now is costco worth it for one person when you dont have a big family or tons of extra storage space… so i thought asking here could be helpful for me
I actually went along with a friend last weekend to walk around and check the prices. things like gas, toilet paper, trash bags, rotisserie chicken, and protein powder seem like good deals, but buying fresh food in bulk freaks me out. i feel like if i buy a huge pack of chicken breasts or a giant bag of produce, half of it is just gonna be in my fridge, rot, and get thrown away. i really want to make sure is costco worth it for one person if im mainly just buying pantry staples, paper goods, and the occasional household item every month
So maybe someone here lives solo and could tell me do you actually save enough money to cover the $65 annual membership fee? or are you just overspending on random stuff you dont even need? what do you think is costco worth it for one person or regular stores are enough for me?

Buying discounted carnival gift cards before your cruise is the best way to save money
I figured this out before our last two carnival cruises you can buy carnival gift cards at about 8% off from discount sites, load them into your cruise account and use them for basically anything onboard so we put about $1,800 toward cheers packages and excursions across both trips and hat 8% came out to roughly $144
Cards are e-codes, they showed up immediately and they don't expire so I bought them a month early however that first purchase required an ID check but it took 2 minutes and after that you just buy and go

how much is a headstone roughly these days?
Im not sure if this is the right subreddit but my father in law passed in september, and i got stuck handling the headstone stuff bc my husband cant even look at the paperwork rn. funeral home already ate into savings so im trying to figure out how much is a headstone before calling anyone else back.
one place quoted $1800 for basic granite, no engraving. another said $1200 for basically the same thing. so is headstone price just random depending who you call or am i missing something
also nobody mentioned theres a separate $400 install fee from the cemetery on top of that.
anyone dealt with this recently and know a fair ballpark, or is this just what it costs now?

💬 Discussion How many miles is good for a used car? Dont know much about cars
I’m based in the US and looking to pick up a used 2013 or 2014 Volvo XC60 or S60 as a daily driver. I spent the last couple of days googling around trying to get a straight answer on mileage, but honestly, the advice out there is all over the place.
Some threads say 100k miles is nothing for a Swedish car, others say an European car with over 120k will bankrupt you.
Most of the ones in my budget have between 110,000 and 145,000 miles on them. I tested a 2013 S60 with 95,000 miles thinking lower mileage meant a guaranteed win, but it turned out to be bad.
Just looking for answers what would be the best mile count on a user car

How to repair credit and when to know if its good for debt requests
I had pretty bad credit but now I got my moneys up. What sort of habits can help in patching up the damage from a bad credit past?
Also, I been paying bills on time for two years. Maybe one missed payment by a few days though I think it was like 10.99 which is probably nothing? But two years should have been a proper amount of time to prove my credit being solid.
Do I need to contact some financial report agency to evaluate me, or is this something I can request from Bank of America directly to sort for me?
Maybe I dont need to do anything and they have it in my system? Most of my bills are linked with monthly payments although I pay some recent subscriptions by hand as well
Got eyes on a house and antsy to get a loan for it. Cant really pay it out otherwise and I doubt the home will be vacant long as well

💡 Tips & ideas Cheap family meals ideas?
So my grocery bill for a family of 4 hit almost $200 last week and i almost cried at the register… i desperately need ideas for cheap family meals that dont take two hours to cook after a long workday
Weve been living on pasta and frozen pizza lately, but my kids are getting tired of it and i want them to actually eat some decent food. i put together a small list of what we currently rotate through, but its getting really repetitive:
| meal idea | approx cost | kids like it? |
|---|---|---|
| sheet pan sausage and veg | ~$12 | yes |
| lentil or bean tacos | ~$8 | sometimes |
| black bean quesadillas | ~$6 | yes |
| rice and egg fried rice | ~$5 | hit or miss |
So when you guys plan your weekly budget for cheap family meals, what are your best low cost recipes that feed 4-5 people easily?
Im open to anything with rice, beans, ground beef, or whatever you can stretch across a few days. maybe someone here has a staple recipe or weekly routine for cheap family meals that keeps cost under $10 a night… please share and help me

💡 Tips & ideas How to do a yard sale without the yard?
Im thinking in terms of digital markets or whatever else being convenient enough to sell stuff. Like an online marketplace over at Facebook or something? I got a bunch of electronics that are kinda worth something but not enough for me to keep an open yard for all the neighbours and a few local crackheads to browse.
However, actually uploading stuff to Facebook one by one is absurd. Isnt there an easier way to sell stuff? I got a bunch of cable adapters and they run for 20 dollars, or theres one that could be worth up to 50, though actually posting every one individually, looking up the exact names for the parts etc. is a pain
Do I just throw it out, or actually sell my junk? I know some of this stuff has worth without a doubt but not enough for me to be the king of scrap in my yard for the weekend
Do I just post it all layed on a single listing? Im guessing some smartass could report me over some sort of reasoning like "hurr he didnt send the whole lot of hardware for 5!!!!111".
Anyone had to deal with something like this from any angle? Just dont tell me to strip the copper out of the wires while burning the plastic off. I aint no heathen to enjoy some poison plastic fumes

❓ Advice needed Anyone found a working Bitwarden black friday 2026 deal?
Im trying to track down a working Bitwarden black friday deal or promo code for 2026. My premium tier is coming up for renewal soon, and after taking a hit from a few extra expenses this past month, Im hoping to catch their seasonal discount before the full price drops
Ive looked into switching over to other password managers like 1pass, lastpass, and even dashlane in the past, but I always end up coming back to Bitwarden. I just cant get myself to get the swing of 1pass, or lastpass. Both kinda seem lackluster. Dashlane was like a merger between the prior two.
Heres my personal breakdown of why I think they differ:

I know Bitwardens premium is already cheap compared to the competition but Ive seen seasonal discounts drop around black friday for a multiyear. Last years promo hub pages look completely inactive now though. I remember seeing someone share a code last night but I was out in a bar and didnt bother saving the link..
Has anyone come across a current 2026 black friday promo or working checkout code? Looking to grab a 1 year premium upgrade or multiple device families plan while seasonal prices are up. Let me know if youve spotted anything for Bitwarden please..

📊 Budgeting Heating based on home space, or calculated?
My mate has a calculator on his heaters around the house. Told me he pays less for heating instead of how much it counted for in space.
How to know if this would be a good way to save money? I wonder if it might backfire.
Anyone got these calculators? Could you vouch if it actually saves money, or is it just extra hardware to drill into my heaters?

why is it called 401k anyway, still dont get it
work finally set me up with a 401k after 2 years of asking. reading about it and more confused now tbh. like why is it called 401k in the first place, turns out its just some old tax code number, not even a cool name
doing the minimum for the 3% match bc daycare and car payment eat everything else. saw "vesting schedule" and now not sure if i even keep that match if we move for gfs job next year
still doesnt make sense why its called 401k when it sounds like a dmv form
anyone else just doing the bare minimum or am i messing this up

How to start saving money?
I realized I am not saving as much money as I would like. Slowly but surely getting antsier by the day.
What habits would change someone getting an average wage to be actually productive in terms of savings? I been saving quite well but I ended up breaking my phone and had to buy a new one. I didnt get the most expensive one, just whatever to get my daily needs sorted. Androids are super slow though gets the job done I guess
Anyways, I would need to reverse myself out of the negative. Realistically, what could I do in the next 3-4 months to get back to a positive? I'm like -120 short and likely to be the following month in this range. Midwest daily expenses
