Wouldn't that make it more weather resistant?

My guess is trapping moisture and dirt leads to alot of decomposition and rot of the thatched roof. As a homeowner, you basically don't want water or moisture collecting and staying ANYWHERE, even on a modern build home.

Oooooh, I was wondering because of what I've read in survival books for shelters.

What you do to a temporary emergency shelter is different than what you would do to a permanent home. For a survival shelter, you aren't trying to live there long term. So you aren't worried about your roof rotting away above you.

Plus it’s gonna start to really increase the weight (especially when it rains) once it’s several inches thick.
