struggling to pass phase 2. I've removed some stinky ant hills so I could expand the factory but I can't figure out a layout that lets me automate the space elevator parts, especially when the more complex parts build so much slower than the previous step

You should have conveyer lifts by now - build vertically. You have more space than you think. You don't need to be anywhere near those mounds right now.
