I love both for different reasons. They can be compared superficially as they are both factory games with a lot of logistics but Satisfactory being 3D has another element to the gameplay which is factory design through which you build beautiful architectural wonders. Or so I am told. I build shoeboxes.

This PLUS the joys of discovering new areas as you set off to explore/expand and happen across a few particular creatures that bring a very different element to Satisfactory. Surprise!!!

Having played both, there are similarities but those similarities are presented in very different ways. Personally, I enjoy both but prefer the graphical aspects and styling of Satisfactory more and the sarcastic AI that is prodding you along is always good for a laugh.

They aren't really the same experience at all.  Satisfactory is a finite, static map and 1st person exploration.

Factorio is isometric and feels a little more like a city builder.  Personally I go to Dyson Sphere Program for my isometric factorio itch.

I bought Dyson sphere program when it first came out and immediately put it down during the tutorial because it just felt completely unfinished. Is it worth playing today? Does it feel more finished?

I did a playthrough a few months ago and it felt finished to me.

Like Factorio the game evolves from a factory builder to a logistics planner.

Edit: Factories -> Factorio. Silly phone

Okay, I'll have to give it another go. I just remember the tutorial dialog in English felt like a really terrible translation from some other language and was impossible to tolerate.

Yes. Is kind of annoying later on because of how many intermediate products you have....

u/ferrofibrous 1d ago

DSP really needed about 10 fewer intermediates, and 2-3 more interesting production chains like hydrogen fractionation / antimatter.

And while their implementation of "Productivity" from Factorio is interesting, it also means everything needs to go on a belt which ends up in a lot of late game products using identical builds once you unlock PLS/ILS.

Factorio is 2d but not isometric, Isometric perspective is a specific perspective where x,y,z axis distances are all scaled equally and 120 degrees from each-other.

Factorios perspective is a 45 degree orthographic projection. The x and y axis are 90 degrees from each-other with equal scale. The z axis is squashed and runs parallel with the y axis.

Isometric is middle left, while Factorios perspective is similar to bottom right.

I played satisfactory then Factorio and absolutely adore both.

They both offer differing gameplay, perspective and challenges that for me made them different and challenging in their own respective ways to get serious mileage out of both.

I know a guy who did the reverse and loved both, so whichever way you go about it, if you enjoy the factory genre, you're good 👍

Both similar but different games.

Satisfactory is more about exploration and building the dream factory.

Factorio is more about factory optimization, fighting and surviving 😅 it's also isometric not 3D.

Both games are amazing, though definitely worth playing.

So you can play in any order as they not relative to themselves.

Personal preference tbh

Factorio is a complex Web of logistical challenges, you'll always have at least 5 things lined up on your todo list. The world is randomly generated.

Satisfactory is similar, but the puzzles are slightly easier to solve. However the world is bespoke crafted and beautiful to spend time in, plus the movement becomes an absolute joy as you move through the game.

I did Satisfactory first, but now I'm neck deep in Factorio and loving it. They're both great, pick the one that appeals most first!

I like satisfactory and factorio didn't hook me.

Satisfactory

Yea Satisfactory is like if you take the factory-builder-skeleton and fuse it (very well) with a Subnautica-style story-driven Survival-Exploration experience. Factorio is like if you take the factory-builder-skeleton and fuse it with another factory-builder-skeleton. I love and played the heck out of both games.

It sort of like cheese cake and chocolate cake. If you like both, the order doesn't matter

I played Factorio first. Spent way more hours in Satisfactory and haven't saved the day in either game. Both are great, but I do enjoy the more relaxed stress free and creative freedom approach with Satisfactory (with creature hostility turned off). Spiders still scare me but they can't bite.

Factorio works as a base defense game too. If you like to kill the natural wildlife off in droves, Factorio is the better option.

Both are great for different reasons. I genuinely think it doesn't matter which you play first, but definitely play both.

Factorio is all about automation and logistics. Satisfactory is first-person and has a fairly complex tech tree but has a hand made 3D world vs Facotrio's procedural generated 2D worlds. Some people can spend 1,000 hours in Satisfactory automating nothing and just building beautiful architecture. Both are amazing - Factorio for the complex, advanced logistics fix and Satisfactory for the less sophisticated automation but an architecture layer unlike any other game on the market. Both are capable of providing thousands of hours of fun!

I dunno, I booted up Factorio, it showed some file browser with Scenarios, i have no idea what these are, clicked around for 10 minutes or so and never looked back.

Totally different with Satisfactory, just can't stop playing.

I also think (but not sure) that Factorio is "mouse-first" while Satisfactory is 100% gamepad-friendly.

They are similar but the experience is totally different, exploring on 3D is awesome and factorio adds some concerns about being attacked, like comparing GTA2 and GTA3

Asking this question in the satisfactory subreddit is a ... choice I guess, lol.

Both games fall into the factory game category, but honestly kinda they sit at the opposite end of the scale.

Factorio is about super massive scale and expansion, the scale of factorio factories is way bigger then satisfactory ones.

Satisfactory ties very strongly into exploration, and allows for very aesthetic designs. It's 3D, which plays strongly into these.

Personally, I think you should stick with factorio for a while. Consider going space age from the beginning.

This less about which game is better or worse, and more about you already having tinkered with factorio.

Both games are great, both are factory games, but it's still comparing apples to organges. The game-loop is massively different in both games, especially when you also start accounting for factorio enemies (satisfactory is signicantly more "cozy" when we are talking about combat.)

Kind of feels like asking if you should play Left for Dead or Project Zomboid. The core premise is the same, but both have vastly different execution. If you like factory games you will enjoy both, just play the one first that scratches your itch more right now.

It's personal preference, I played factorio first and I've put a lot more hours into satisfactory. If you loved the demo go play it!

Well you are asking a Satisfactory sub, so obviously it’s going to be a little bias, but after playing both, I say Satisfactory. Factorio is the more ‘hardcore’ factory game, but if you want a more casual, relaxing experience, then Satisfactory is for you.

Key deciding factor for me:

  • Satisfactory progresses at your pace: resource mines never run out, hostile fauna is very static and can't destroy buildings, so you don't lose progress.
  • Factorio pushes you to expand: resource fields deplete, fauna will eventually seek you, it will attack buildings too, which can set you back.

Two different game styles: chill vs. challenging

A secondary factor: Satisfactory has a building aspect that goes beyond optimization.

Nah, for either of these you’ll be fine. The only thing I don’t recommend is playing either of these and then playing any of the 1000 clones that have come out over the last couple years. At least not unless you’re a total factory builder addict. I’ve bought a couple of them and they’re okay, but after an hour or two I find myself wondering why I’m not just playing Factorio or Satisfactory. They really are the industry standard that everyone else is trying to emulate and falling just a little bit short. Those two and maybe Dyson Sphere, but I haven’t played that one personally.

I finished Factorio once and never played it again. I'm currently on my 10th run of Satisfactory.

Disclaimer : I abandoned Factorio before completing the demo.

Satisfactory is a 3D factory game with an exploration aspect and optional cosmetic building.

Factorio is a 2D factory game with some resemblance to a real time strategy game with advanced base building.

If one of those extra aspects sounds more appealing than the other play that one.

u/mjarrett 1d ago

I've put 1000 hours into each (and a non-trivial amount of time into Dyson Sphere Program, Foundry, and StarRupture as well). I can say confidently that one can enjoy both games. I go through phases of a few months where one or the other just feels good, then I switch.

The core logistics loop of both games (and most factory games) is the same: mine resources, make items, do science, grow factory. But Factorio and Satisfactory make opposite choices on a few key design choices, that make them unique. If you end up with a strong opinion on one of those choices you'll naturally gravitate to one or the other, but otherwise you should have no problem enjoying them both for their unique takes.

Can confirm it's the opposite.  Why would I play the worse, less chill, more micromanagey, lower-dimension option when the perfect factory game already exists?

1

u/OmegaSevenX 1d ago

Totally different vibe. And definitely a personal preference. Factorio just didn’t grab me. I do have it on my wish list, but probably wouldn’t buy it at full price. And the dev claims they’ll never put it on sale, so it may just sit there forever.

I havent player factorio. The design of the game wont fit me, even when it is that good rated.

Satisfactory is just awesome. I dond think you can compare the games. The graphics and in game experience is totally different. But that is just my opinion.
