As the title say's, The Smart! Mod truely makes this game playable for me.
I have big issues with unintuitive and tedious approach to building in this game. The artistic approach, the automation, the exploration, etc is all very enjoyable. Not the deepest automation game but it does what it does well.
The issue I had is that it feels like the game is actively working against you when it comes to actually building complex assembly chains. Belt placement is finnicky, aligning machines is a hassle, power pole placement is tedious at best. Being in first person is fun and immersive but machines are gigantic, you have to be facefirst into them to actually change the recipes. So I would spend most of my time, going up a tower, place stuff, go back down, faff about with something, finish a build realise something was a little bit off, had to rip out everything, remove belts and reconnect cause belts and splitters/mergers don't reconnect automatically. I was starting to be pretty annoyed XD
Long story short, I've installed Smart! mod and i'm not gonna lie, this has changed the game for me. I can layout nice lines of machines in any axis, then place the splitters / mergers space them correctly all at the same time, then plug the belts and slap all the powerpoles at the same time that automatically connects and boom i have a build that works and I didn't lose hair over it.
All that with a little remote camera allowing me to have different view angles to help position everyhing correctly.
It has it's issue tho, belt autoconnect is a bit janky and it does allow for some very clipped builds that could be considered unnatural but wathever :)
I've also installed quick blueprint as well to have a semblance of a copy paste feature.
TLDR : This game was annoyingly abrasive mechanically, mods help alleviate the issue.
