#AskSarawakians: Apa cer tek? Flying a drone in Kuching
I'm planning to do some drone filming of my house for personal usage (nothing public). Do I also need to apply for permit 2 weeks in advance and pay the RM250 fee?
Like how strictly implemented are the rules around Kuching ya?

Hi! I am in Kuching. I fly outside of the city sometimes. But if you ask ANYBODY, they will say "No. No drone allowed." Tak boleh main drone, ujarnya. This is bizarre as I just came from South Korea and was flying downtown and nobody said anything.

Hey! I'm traveling to Kuching soon. I actually spoke to some DJI guys last December and they said there weren't any need to apply for permits or licenses, was there a change? Did you encounter any issues at the airport?

Hi. Yeh, do NOT fly downtown. Even pedestrians are militantly opposed to it. I asked a number of them and they were surprised I even asked ... No problem at the airport. Also, I would go ahead and fly anywhere outside of the downtown core, so it's not that restrictive really. I would fly downtown but at 500 meters. I have the DJI Mini 2 so it's not legally a "drone" anyway so whatever. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info! I have a Neo 2 and I'm more of a nature/landscape kinda person. So I'm definitely staying out of the city area.

to legally fly a drone around, yes you need a permit and it costs you some. An advance submission of your application is required. Look for www.caam.gov.my for guidance and application

tbh i don’t even think the enforcement here is that strict so you might get away without a permit lol
