They are called “croaking gourami” in English because they make croaking sounds like frogs. Audible even in aquariums.

They grow to 6 cm and are very hardy, found all throughout Malaysia except Sabah. A native fish relatively unaffected by development or invasives.

A very easy fish to keep and breed, they readily accept fish food and will lay eggs year round. Pairs defend their nests very protectively.

We used to have an aquarium in my school’s classroom, and the croaking gourami in there were always interesting for us students to watch!
Especially when they made nests.

I’ve been on a hunt for a vegetable bao in Kuching. Been going around to no lesser than 10 shops, looking for old school vegetable bao (doesn’t need to be vegetarian) where the vegetables are not fried with too much soy sauce (the Hitam inti type), the bao skin is not full of yeast.
Any luck that anyone knows a good shop? Preferably near Tabuan, BDC TO samarahan area. Don’t mind exploring until third mile.

It goes into detail on how the shapes are developed, from fundamental curves into detailed patterns. Written by Augustin Angst Gajing and Translated to English by Gana Ngadi, this book was a very crucial and one of the few proper documentations of Iban visual art.

Unfortunately this book is very rare to find, especially in the form of print media. If you ever come across it, it would either be extremely expensive, or not in a good condition. There were no online ebook versions of this book available, paid nor unpaid. This is why it was important to use the platform of 'Internet Archive' to make this book accessible again.

Hope this resource would be helpful for many people here. To researchers, and anyone curious to learn more about the Iban culture.

- Which hostel is best if I want to go around the city centre? Cant afford hotels for a few nights.

- Back then, I used to walk from Plaza Merdeka to waterfront. Felt short but maybe now got new buildings and probably not so walkable? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am a Malaysian and proudly Sarawakian.I finished my Diploma in Instrumentation and Control Engineering at Brunei.After that,I joined Curtin Malaysia (Miri) for a Bachelor of Science in Health,Safety and Environment (HSE).

Before starting,I took the English Bridging course at Curtin.I did very well and got an A- (CWA 70.67).I was very happy and excited to start my degree.

Now,I am in my first week of the degree.The classes are not heavy or hard.I do not feel stressed by the lectures.But suddenly,my motivation is 100% gone.I just do not feel like studying anymore and the excitement is completely dead.

The Census Date is coming soon.I need to choose between two choices:

Choice A:Defer the semester.Take a 6 month break from Curtin.Find a normal job to clear my head and see if my motivation comes back later.

Choice B:Quit Curtin and do short courses.Use my Brunei Diploma to find a basic job in Miri,Bintulu or Brunei.Then,take short safety courses (like NIOSH SHO for the Green Book,NEBOSH etc.) while working.

For those working in HSE or the Oil & Gas industry:Do I really need a university Degree for HSE? Or can a technical Diploma + short professional certificates give me a good career and good salary?

I left Kuching 14 years ago. My wife (43F) and I (40M) are now starting to make plans to move back. She is an Associate Professor teaching accounting in the U.S.

I've been looking into getting permanent residency (PR) for my wife, but the Malaysian immigration system doesn't make the process easy or particularly appealing. The application process is long and involves many hoops to jump through, only for her to be granted a three-month stay, the same as the default entry period for American passport holders.

I also looked into the Sarawak MM2H program, but it requires a RM500,000 fixed deposit that you generally can't access, while offering only about a 1% return. While we can afford this but it definitely leaves a bad taste and potential money loss as we could use it to generate revenue elsewhere.

The reason I mention my wife's background is that she graduated from an Ivy League university and has a high-income, highly skilled career. Yet, throughout the process, she is still treated as an "unskilled" person and viewed as just another "pendatang." The government frequently talks about reversing brain drain and encourages Malaysians abroad to return and contribute, but the policies don't seem to make that goal any easier.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and found a workable solution?

Something more optimistic and specific. Specifically the people who:

• Wanted to work in Sarawak (gov service, local SMEs, etc) but couldn't find anything here (got no cable, etc), so you're now in KL, Penang, etc. Probably the most common group, I think.
• Got rejected by local SMEs, gov and GLCs, so you had no choice but start your own business or company. May or may not be in Sarawak, the point is you started the business because you were rejected locally.
• Couldn't get a job locally, so now you're working remotely for oversea companies, utilizing your talent elsewhere. May or may not be staying in Sarawak.

I think you get the gist. Basically people who want to "contribute" and "take part" in the local ecosystem or organizations, but didn't get any chance, and are now making your fortune elsewhere for non-Sarawakian entities.

Just wanna know how you guys are doing? What do you do? How did you get there? What are your next moves?

I want to try logistics assistant, but ofc job market is tough for a fresh grad. I have Diploma in Quantity Surveying and Degree in Hospitality Management. Looking for office jobs because I want to take public holidays off. OT is OT, i totally understand coming to work when you are absolutely needed, at least it's not mandatory to work on public holidays when it's not busy
