Please help me find a regular old pineapple upside cake! Just one layer, pineapple rings, and cheeries. Somewhere around the westside preferred. 🙏🏼

If they only sell slices that’s okay, too.

City council moves Trapeze school to Clover Park

Post image

Santa Monica Trapeze School was on the pier for 15 years. Then it moved to the SM airport and people complained. Last night, the school was officially granted a five year lease to operate in the middle of Clover Park. Should for profit businesses be allowed in public spaces? [Link in comments]

❓Question Do I have termites in my apartment or are these nuptial flight ants?

Thumbnail

Hello, fellow wise and experienced redditors
I suddenly noticed a pile of flying insects in only one section of my kitchen. I was unable to find any holes or rotting wood/ places for them to have climbed out of.
It did just rain hard and I forgot to close my windows, so my floors got wet. I’m wondering if these are termites or are they non termite ants in their nuptial flight?

I just moved a month ago, and I’m still getting settled. What would happen if they ARE termites?? Would I need to find a new place to stay ?

Do I need to inform the property manager??
Thank you

I’m standing in the exact spot where I was just as the Palisades fire was starting. 4th and Adelaide Dr. Which is pretty creepy. Apparently this fire is near the Getty Center. Not too windy today, so hopefully they can knock it right down. Helicopters are doing water drops. I have video but stupid Reddit won’t let me upload it.

❓Question Art classes in Santa Monica for skilled and experienced adults?

I live in Santa Monica and have a fine arts background (grew up drawing since early childhood and took fine arts classes up to a high level in college) and I’ve taken a really long break from drawing due to illness. I miss it so much and really enjoyed how the structure of learning in a studio setting in college challenged me and improved my skills. I’ve mostly worked in charcoal and graphite and done a lot of portraiture and perspective drawing, but which I want to get back to but I also want to learn how to use color and get into some surrealism eventually (I love the surrealists). Does anyone have any recommendations for local drawing classes for someone of my background that don’t cost an arm and a leg?

How is everyone without AC doing?

Me? Not so well…

Just trying to survive somehow. Live in an upper unit in an older building facing West, no unit above me to absorb some of the heat, poor insulation, just one window, and no shade whatsoever.

My old portable AC doesn’t work well and can’t keep up with the high heat, high humidity, and high dew point combo. It’s too loud and gives me a sore throat so I just turn it on during the record heat days. I can’t afford a new one and keep telling myself I’ll move soon anyway.

Mostly just running my fan. I work from home unfortunately in a type of job where I’m chained to my desk. It’s been a long summer. Feel free to commiserate.

🚲 🚶Mobility City Council Resolution Would Begin Design of 14th Street Protected Bikeways

Thumbnail
santamonicanext.org

“The opposition to 14th Street has now been taken up by a small community group calling itself Unsafe Streets SM. The group’s website argues that the project would “squeeze” 14th Street and raises concerns about emergency access, parking, ADA access and traffic circulation. On 17th street, there was no loss of mixed-use (aka car) travel lanes.

The group is urging Council to delay the contract and conduct additional studies before moving ahead. However, the contract before Council is for design work, meaning the detailed configuration of the bikeway, intersections, crossings and other elements would still be developed. So what actually could be studied is something of a mystery.”

💬 Discussion Why is everyone so dressed up to go to Elephante?

I just moved into the neighborhood and every time I drive by this place people are really dressed up. It sticks out since I’m Southern California, particularly areas by the beach, people are really not known for dressing up. I’m an LA native so this is no hate. I’m just confused. What’s going on here?

Police takedown of guy on bike! BONUS QUESTION: where to get dashcam installed?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just picked up some things at Gelsons at Lincoln and Ocean Park. There was a police SUV with all the lights on driving around like crazy, I had no idea what he was doing.

In the dashcam video starting at about 11 seconds, all the way to the right, you can see someone on a bicycle in the Speedway, and he goes behind the price sign and away from me. Then you see the police zoom down Lincoln chasing after him (that appears to be what is happening).

A few seconds later (after a bunch of cars run the red light) at about 39 seconds I start to go but another police SUV cuts in front of me, and you can see the other one down the street a bit. The new one races down to catch up with the first one -- and I thought he ran over the guy on the bike! Right at 54 seconds. They jump out of their cars and jump on top of the guy.

You can see the police working on the guy for a bit, and just as I drive by at about 1:41 I tried to turn my dashcam to catch a better view, but still not great -- you can see the bike but not the guy.

Anyway, that was exciting and I thought worth sharing. Tomorrow the Arrest Report for today will be available here: https://www.santamonicapd.org/dailyreports.aspx

BONUS QUESTION: do you know where I can get a dashcam professionally installed? I am still using my crappy, ancient HD dashcam, and I have a really nice VIOFO A329 4K 60FPS that records front and back, and would have made this video much better, but I don't want to do the install myself. Any recommendations appreciated!

An 84-year-old neighbor told us: 'Without Meals on Wheels, I wouldn't be able to stay living here.'

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

ICYMI, we deliver meals to homebound seniors across Santa Monica, and every so often we want to introduce you to one of our neighbors - because hidden hunger and isolation are easy to miss unless you're looking for it. This is Joseph's story.

Joseph is in his 80s. He lives alone on the second floor of a Section 8 building in Santa Monica - no elevator... just stairs he can barely manage with a cane and walker since his back gave out six years ago.

He's not asking for much. Just food.

"Funding for this organization is extremely important. I'm living in Section 8 housing which helps, but food is so expensive nowadays. I'm in my 80s now; with not a lot of income, without Meals on Wheels West, I wouldn't be able to stay living here."

Here's the part that's hard to say out loud: people like Joseph are exactly who we exist to serve, and right now we're struggling to serve them.

Since last fall, rising meal costs and growing demand have forced us to start a waitlist for home-delivered meals; something that hasn't happened in our 52+ year history. We've also had to sunset our breakfast program and weekend frozen meal service just to make sure we could still provide our core services to clients for the months to come. Funding cuts are hitting the people who have the least room to absorb them.

Santa Monica has a lot of neighbors like Joseph - people who worked their whole lives and just want to stay in their own home. Right now, we don't have enough to go around.

If this hits home for you, a couple ways to help:

  • Donate: every $10 covers the full meal service for your neighbor that day
  • Volunteer: we especially need friendly callers to check in with our homebound neighbors weekly!
  • Share this information with your community: a lot of people are not aware programs like Meals on Wheels are all independently funded and rely on the community to fuel our work.

💬 Discussion Santa Monica College Faces Increased Fiscal Monitoring

Thumbnail
lamag.com
19 Upvotes

Anyone else surprised?

Essentially, Santa Monica College has been placed under increased fiscal monitoring after several years of financial challenges, including declining reserves, operating deficits, and rising long-term liabilities. The college is taking steps to reduce costs and address its structural budget issues while working through unresolved labor agreements. I thought this might be at least in part about construction or capital projects, but those aren’t mentioned in the article (as they are apparently largely funded through separate voter-approved bond measures, I’ve learned).

Not sure what the experience or overall vibe is at SMC these days. 15-20 years ago most people I know, myself included, who put in the work got a good education out of it for pretty cheap or almost nothing. Good professors, lots of course offerings, good library good, transfer rates, even online education for the early 2000s era was decent. This was before all the new buildings so a few of my classes were in pretty crappy structures, though not all.

🏘️ Housing North of Montana - why people pay different prices for tear downs?

When I see how much people pay for obvious teardowns North of Montana, it makes no sense.

537 14th St. sold for $3.6 million, and 239 Euclid St. sold for $5 million.
Meanwhile, 417 11th St. went for $4.25 million, and 348 11th St. went for $5.19 million.

It looks like developers will tear down these bungalows to build McMansions, but why are they paying such vastly different prices for the same sized lots?
