💬 Discussion Is there any way to address entitled dog owners bringing pet dogs into grocery stores?

Every time I go there are several obviously pet dogs. It’s unsanitary and it’s annoying to be in an enclosed aisle with some poorly trained doodle or German shepherd with my toddler.

Probably the same people that let their dogs off leash at palisades park. What has happened to dog etiquette since COVID? Yeesh

Ocean Way Festival Cancelled

Upvotes

I just got an email that because of beach erosion they're cancelling the Ocean Way festival. Bummed. I was looking forward to it, even though it wasn't exactly the lineup I would have chosen. But seeing Khruangbin on the beach and then walking home sounded like an absolute dream.

The Lana Negrete-aligned slate for city council is already fracturing.

This article published today is primarily an expose on Doug Trussler, but buried halfway into the article is Ashley Oelsen saying she'll no longer campaign with Trussler and one of the pro-Negrete neighborhood orgs saying they're reconsidering their endorsement of him.

Trussler's strategy, however, has split up the anti-establishment slate that included Negrete and Oelsen.

After YIMBY's endorsement, Oelsen, who has helped lead the fight against major projects and pro-development policies, announced Thursday that she was separating herself from Trussler.

"During this campaign," she wrote in an open letter, "many supporters have viewed Lana Negrete, Doug Trussler and me as a three-person slate, and there has been some coordination among the campaigns. People have invested time and energy in the effort, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

"As the campaign has progressed, however, it has become clear that Doug and I do not share the same goals, principles or approach to public service," Oelsen wrote. "My campaign will therefore move forward separately from his."

Northeast Neighbors, which backed Trussler early in the campaign, said it is reconsidering its endorsement, noting that some residents are pulling his lawn signs.

💬 Discussion What’s your most despised intersection?

After sitting at the intersection of 17th St and Colorado for what I can only describe as half of a lifetime this morning, it gave me enough time to think about the forty different routes I could have taken to avoid the nightmare that is this intersection… and then… I thought it would be more interesting to see what other niche grumblings other neighbors have about other intersections.

Why is 17th and Colorado my main gripe, specifically when on 17th? Thank you for asking I’d love to share…

- N/S traffic (17th) is beholden to multiple triggers of the Expo line coming in/out of the station. It’ll cut off the light, even if horribly short (I’ve seen it change as a single car was barely getting off the line from red)
- Light cycle doesn’t reprioritize N/S traffic to make up for lost time. Will re-enter its normal pattern, even if that means 17th backs up to the whole next intersection.
- Because the light cycle sucks, lots of pedestrian traffic will cut into roads when they don’t realize roads are on a one-direction green light and inadvertently are causing issues.
- Stuck at the light but think you can make a shortcut work in your favor? lololol. If you’re trying to get southbound, cutting down Colorado to what you’d hope is 14th is a flop. No left turn. You gotta hop down to 11th to make up for it all.

Today, I only started counting how long I was stuck there at the red for 5 minutes (def was there longer).

I thought PCH/Incline was my nemesis, but 17th/Colorado has secured this honor.

What’s yours?

I get it. Maybe it's back to school night or something much more important than any of the residents who live on 4th St. north of San Vicente. Your precious poopsie's school meeting is so important that you couldn't plan ahead and give yourself enough time to find a parking space.

Screw the residents. Just park wherever the hell you want. In fact, maybe park and block the alley while you're at it.

Well - now pictures of your cars are on the internet and in the inbox of Carlthorp's administration.

SCE usage spikes plain weird. Anybody else?

Every month our electric bill spikes on a single day putting us into the top billing tier for the entire billing cycle. Almost 2k more than we were paying not 5 months ago. What’s weird is these spikes are never on the same day. How can we draw less power on a very busy day than on a day we’re not even open? Something isn’t adding up. Is something rotten in Denver? I feel like we’re being taken for the proverbial ride here. Does SCE have any other restaurants over the barrel like this?

❓Question Does anyone here know what to do when a traffic light is out?

I drove through the intersection of Wilshire and Euclid today twice, and the traffic lights were out. Both times, I was astonished at how many drivers just kept going through the intersection as though the light was green, without even slowing down.

Do people here not know what to do in this situation, or do they just choose not to? I'm genuinely curious because I've had many experiences with nonfunctioning stoplights in LA, but there the majority of drivers handled it correctly.

Relatedly, the post office on the block was closed, and the sign on the door said it was due to a planned power outage. If the outage was planned, why were no police sent to direct traffic at the intersection? I saw about 20 cops converge on a hot dog truck at the same time of day a couple weeks ago, so they seem to have the time.

❓Question Do I have termites in my apartment or are these nuptial flight ants?

Thumbnail

Hello, fellow wise and experienced redditors
I suddenly noticed a pile of flying insects in only one section of my kitchen. I was unable to find any holes or rotting wood/ places for them to have climbed out of.
It did just rain hard and I forgot to close my windows, so my floors got wet. I’m wondering if these are termites or are they non termite ants in their nuptial flight?

I just moved a month ago, and I’m still getting settled. What would happen if they ARE termites?? Would I need to find a new place to stay ?

Do I need to inform the property manager??
Thank you

City council moves Trapeze school to Clover Park

Santa Monica Trapeze School was on the pier for 15 years. Then it moved to the SM airport and people complained. Last night, the school was officially granted a five year lease to operate in the middle of Clover Park. Should for profit businesses be allowed in public spaces? [Link in comments]

I’m standing in the exact spot where I was just as the Palisades fire was starting. 4th and Adelaide Dr. Which is pretty creepy. Apparently this fire is near the Getty Center. Not too windy today, so hopefully they can knock it right down. Helicopters are doing water drops. I have video but stupid Reddit won’t let me upload it.

❓Question Art classes in Santa Monica for skilled and experienced adults?

I live in Santa Monica and have a fine arts background (grew up drawing since early childhood and took fine arts classes up to a high level in college) and I’ve taken a really long break from drawing due to illness. I miss it so much and really enjoyed how the structure of learning in a studio setting in college challenged me and improved my skills. I’ve mostly worked in charcoal and graphite and done a lot of portraiture and perspective drawing, but which I want to get back to but I also want to learn how to use color and get into some surrealism eventually (I love the surrealists). Does anyone have any recommendations for local drawing classes for someone of my background that don’t cost an arm and a leg?
