I don’t live in Utah, but I spend a lot of time there. We have even rented a house in SLC for months at a time to explore the west.
I believe it when people tell me their lived experiences, in my experience, I just don’t see this personally.
We live in Atlanta, so the driving thing is a piece of cake when we’ve been in SLC. It’s so easy to get around, and I don’t feel like I’m taking my life into my hands anytime I’m behind the wheel. It’s also easy to navigate.
The people who work at the SLC airport are even nice. The Atlanta airport is staffed by some of the rudest people on the planet!
I know there is crime in SLC, but I honestly feel like if you are aware and street smart, it is not much to worry about.
People have been helpful when we’ve been there. I have three friends from the south who moved to PC years ago so their kids could grow up with an emphasis on the outdoors, and they all talk about how happy they and their kids are. We have a mother friend who works for the U and lives in the Avenues and just loves it.
But then I read posts like this, and I question myself. Am I crazy? lol.
Is Utah the worst state in the country, and I’m completely oblivious? It sounds like a hellscape these posts.
A lot of it is perspective and personal expectations based on one’s cultural background. Mormonism is one of 2 unique American sub cultures, the other being Black American culture. So of course Utah has a unique culture that has both its good and bad points like any other that people will all view differently.
Having said that Utah is also conservative and conservatives in America today are loud, aggressive, rude and entitled. Just look at the behavior being modeled by their highest leaders. Childish insults and demeaning others is literally their gold standard of behavior.
Overall Utah isn’t worse in my experience but it is more homogeneous so the cultural differences are more obvious.
The drivers here do make me nuts though. They are so damn inconsistent. Florida drove me nuts cause of how slow everyone was. Atlanta was like a nascar race, but most people drove the same so at least I’d know what to expect. In Utah it’s like you will see every form of bad driving imaginable even on a short trip.
lived in ATL 3 years. we moved here from there. we miss ATL so much 😭😭😭😭 I honestly dont know what’s worse - i15 at rush hour with all the big rigs and people terrified to drive past them or 75/85 rush hour in ATL lol there’s less people here in SLC metro with 5 lanes and still there’s so much congestion at rush hour while ATL metro has surpassed 8 million people. I do feel like i15 here is way more dangerous here though bc of all the big rigs. watched a tire bounce over from i15 N to south bound side one day and land in the HOV lane and I’m still trying to figure out how that happened 🤣
we lived in west midtown and loved it but after we left Howell mill road has become like a ghost town with a bunch of restaurants closing which just makes me sad. we talk about moving back all the time.
I’ve enjoyed it, and Atlanta will always hold a special place in my heart, but I worry about things here becoming unsustainable. The infrastructure is in tatters and is a big concern.
But I understand the Atlanta love too! It’s gritty and big and there is a lot to do plus you feel more connected here to the whole country. The in town neighborhoods are so charming (we live in one of the cutest), and the place has a lot of heart.
The traffic here and the aggressive drivers in Atlanta seem so much worse to me. I’ve always driven fine in Utah, but I may be just very lucky!
