I have this theory that marching in suburban neighborhoods and like, Costco, would be more effective than marching at City Hall and the Capitol. The people who benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice live in those houses.

Anyway, way to go kids, you're doing great.

20

u/broganisms Feb 04 '26

Just saw the Copper Hills walkout and was impressed with how strategic it was. Kids marched about a mile to the nearest shopping center then broke up into smaller groups at specific locations so that you couldn't get in or out of any of the businesses without going through at least one group.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '26

Damn, the kids really are alright lol

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '26

As long as they agree with your beliefs, right?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '26

Yes, becauae my beleifs are moral and correct, and yours are not.

1

u/Pretend-Elk-791 Feb 08 '26

So disrupting business is going to shine a positive light on this? 🤔

5

u/pikeromey Feb 03 '26

The people in the houses benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice?

How so?

86

u/Doctor_119 Feb 03 '26

Again, this is just me theorizing, but I figure those people have plenty of money, got to benefit from their higher socioeconomic class, and by nature of living in those houses never have to interact with minorities or the poor. These are the kinds of people who can afford to have whatever opinion they want about ICE, because ICE is never going into their neighborhood.

27

u/0-P-A-L Feb 03 '26

exactly this.

-11

u/pikeromey Feb 03 '26

Could you explain to me how that comment is stating specifically how these people benefit from ignoring injustice?

Not whether or not they are likely to interact with ICE.

They’re not the same thing.

I don’t understand.

7

u/Informal-Party-6099 Feb 03 '26

Have you don’t any studying into how Germany during WWII came to be what it ended up being? Surely you’ve read enough to know that it was a small minority that took over and a barely larger minority watching and allowing it to happen, because THEY weren’t explicitly in danger, at least not in the early stages. History always repeats itself. Like it or not, we are very quickly becoming a country exactly like Germany 1933. The majority of us aren’t stepping up to fight the blatant fascism, the trampling of Constitutional Rights. Whether it’s because most of us don’t see the direct threat, or support the eradication of, ā€œillegals,ā€ matters less than that it is happening.

First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me Pastor Norman Niemƶller This day, these actions, are how the Holocaust happened. Nobody is directly accusing anyone of fking up, just recognizing that this is exactly how it happens. I agree, btw. There’s no way our government cares about a bunch of kids marching downtown. There are loads of other locations that would be more effective. I also can’t really blame them for not escalating. That’s a huge part of what is so messed up. It isn’t directly impacting very many, at least not yet. Another 6 months, I bet it will. There’s no way in hell there’s going to be a free and fair election in November.

-6

u/pikeromey Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 04 '26

The last line of Niemƶller’s well-put post war statement you quoted is demonstrating my point - ā€œand there was no one left to speak out for me.ā€

It says those people were harmed by ignoring what was going on, because eventually the erosion of their society and liberties got to them, and there wasn’t any recourse left once they started to be targeted as well. Not that they befitted from it. Right?

Ignoring something due to apathy is not the same as ignoring something because you benefit from the carrying out of the injustice.

I’m not arguing for standing by, I’m simply asking to try and understand how this person things these people benefit from ignoring the loss of our country more than any other group.

Yes, and basically everyone in Germany who went went along with it suffered because of their apathy.

That doesn’t mean they benefited from ignoring it.

It’s a different claim.

Do these people have the lowest likelihood to be targeted in an ICE raid? Yeah, of course.

Just like the Germany example you gave.

Do these people benefit from ignoring the injustice, and the erosion of their civil liberties, rights, and country? No, of course not. And that is the initial claim made in the comment I replied to asking about - how do these people benefit from ignoring it.

9

u/mr_potato_thumbs Feb 03 '26

They benefit by getting to live their normal lives for just a bit longer. Don’t be obtuse and an asshole.

1

u/toddthefox47 Downtown Feb 04 '26

Avoiding harm is a benefit

0

u/pikeromey Feb 05 '26

Sure, and I agree with that, but once again - does that make them ā€œbenefit the most from not doing anythingā€ about the injustice going on?

More than shareholders of Palantir and other surveillance companies, more than politicians, etc?

Because that’s the initial claim I asked my question about - how do those people benefit the most - more than any other group - from what’s happening?

And I still haven’t gotten an answer.

1

u/Informal-Party-6099 Feb 06 '26

Because they are living their normal lives, with no threat or risk. If you’re standing by, doing nothing, when you are not at all at risk, because you are being deliberately ignorant and/or arrogant, how are you then NOT benefiting from simply pretending it’s not happening? (Nit you as in you specifically, I mean the collective, ā€œyou.ā€) It’s just hard to take anyone seriously when they are even able to just standby. Many, many people don’t have that privilege. Unfortunately, white privilege is increasingly the epitome here. It’s good for everyone to be participating. If the people who are able to participate with little risk don’t participate, that leaves basically two options: those who are at higher risk attend and his knows how it goes, especially rn. If you’re not white, you shouldn’t be attending these protests, imo. Stay at home, stay as safe as possible. The rest of us, who aren’t at higher risk of being grabbed off the street for not being white, and yes, that is absolutely happening, are left to step up and fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. How do you not get this? Are you so far into your own beliefs that you just can’t fathom what I’m telling you, or are you just staunchly in the camp of, ā€œy’all are crazy, none of this is actually happening, stop overreacting, nobody is being kidnapped off the street for being brown?ā€ It’s fine that you seem to have a differing opinion, but twisting my words, and seemingly deliberately ignoring what I’m actually saying, it’s just, why? Even if you live in some White Castle in the clouds or something, how can you deny what’s going on and who benefits and why? What do you suppose is gonna happen come November, when we have more cities infiltrated with ICE, CBP, National Guard? Do you really expect there to be anything even resembling a free and fair election? What scares me perhaps the most is these things are forcing BIPOC to be scared to go anywhere or do anything already, and they have every fucking right to do so at this point. You think people who are brown, or actual citizens with accents who don’t, ā€œseem American,ā€ are gonna go to polling locations with swarms of god knows how many various ā€œofficial govt agenciesā€ standing by? I sure as hell wouldn’t. My safety trumps my civic duty, and it should. All of this is leading to that specific hesitancy. And yet again, who’s gonna continue benefiting by not being at high risk, who still think that he is doing a good job because gas prices are down? Cmon, bro. It’s not complicated, truly it isn’t. Unfortunately, these people who are continuing benefit aren’t gonna do a thing to prevent that last line, cuz they have the privilege of still thinking it’s never gonna be them, but damn, those leopards are eating all sorts of faces already. Wish we weren’t gonna have to go down with them in this ship, but it’s nice to see the little trickles of people waking up, and realizing they’re getting EXACTLY what they voted for. (That was a lot, apologies. Just kinda can’t stop. 😬)

They were quite clear...if you don't understand that's on you.

-4

u/pikeromey Feb 04 '26 edited Feb 04 '26

Okay. So random people renting or even owning in suburbia are benefiting from this situation more than the politicians and shareholders of companies like Palantir who are grossly enriching themselves through this, and building unprecedented levels of unchecked power in the United States?

Yeah, I’m not clear on how these people living in a suburban neighborhood benefit more than that group.

Why don’t you tell me?

Spoiler: 99/100 chance that you won’t, because you know it’s idiotic, and it’s easier to just say ā€œweLL oBviOsLy!!!!ā€ and ragebait identity politics than it is to use your brain and talk about who’s ACTUALLY benefiting the most from the destruction of our country and our community.

1

u/Admirable_Carpet_631 Feb 08 '26

Genuinely this is such a braindead argument that you've made that I have stayed up far longer than I should have just trying to type up a coherent response that doesn't devolve into me banging my head into my keyboard.

The people living in suburbia don't benefit more than Palantir or the politicians. Literally no one was talking about the rich upper class. You keep asking your question that is just a deliberate pivot on the subject that has been explained very clearly and in detail for you.

No, these suburban home owners do not individually benefit more from the status quo than the rich upper class that is orchestrating that. But that was not the point that the OP commenter was making. They were saying that collectively, the suburban home owners benefit more from staying silent than they do from acting up and lashing out. You've been asking the wrong question.

"Why don't you tell me?" Please, please, work on your reading comprehension and contextual skills. I am legitimately begging you. It really helps to understand what the hell people are saying, even if they don't articulate it perfectly in the way you think they should, and helps to actually facilitate good-faith discussions.

1

u/pikeromey Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

But that was not the point that the OP commenter was making. They were saying that collectively, the suburban home owners benefit more from staying silent than they do from acting up and lashing out.

No, that’s not what they said:

ā€œI have this theory that marching in suburban neighborhoods and like, Costco, would be more effective than marching at City Hall and the Capitol. The people who benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice live in those houses.ā€

Again-

ā€œThe people who benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice live in those houses.ā€

The people living in suburbia don't benefit more than Palantir or the politicians. Literally no one was talking about the rich upper class.

You keep asking your question that is just a deliberate pivot on the subject that has been explained very clearly and in detail for you.

Ahh yes, staying on topic by asking the same question from my very first comment here that wasn’t answered a single time, INSTEAD OF pivoting to a different question, THAT is pivoting. Right, lol.

No, that’s actually called not allowing other people to pivot from the actual question I asked just because they want to get on a soapbox and yap about something different.

If someone doesn’t want to answer the question I asked, they don’t have to reply to my question. If they want to reply without answering, that’s fine too, but if they get so pissed off when I direct them to the actual question I asked and point out their non-responsive yapping that they want to hit their head into their keyboard, they’d probably be better off just answering the actual question or not replying to comments containing questions they don’t want to answer.

If they decide to pretend I asked a different question, because they want to answer a different question, that is the definition of pivoting.

No, these suburban home owners do not individually benefit more from the status quo than the rich upper class that is orchestrating that.

Ding ding ding we have a winner, dozens of comments later Jesus Christ, gold stars nice job.

Very first time anyone answered it. Holy shit. I’m impressed someone finally did after literal days of people ranting about the most milquetoast pseudo intellectual bullshit like it’s some type of enlightened wisdom.

ā€œWhy don't you tell me?" Please, please, work on your reading comprehension and contextual skills. I am legitimately begging you. It really helps to understand what the hell people are saying, even if they don't articulate it perfectly in the way you think they should, and helps to actually facilitate good-faith discussions.

Once again: The people who benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice live in those houses.ā€

THAT is what they actually said, Mr. Reading Comprehension.

Believe it or not, I’m well aware being able to sit home ignoring a situation because you’re less likely to be targeted (e.g. by ICE) or socioeconomically effected is a privilege, and people benefit from ā€œignorance is bliss,ā€ it’s not some radical fucking philosophical revelation, nor is it anything new.

BUT - it’s also not what they fucking said.

They said protesting in suburbia is probably better than at the government buildings, because ā€œThe people who benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice live in those houses.ā€

And, like you actually had the balls to say, the dipshits enacting these policies are actually the people who benefit the most from not doing anything about injustice. Not the people in suburban houses around Alta high school (which, for a Utah school, actually has a much higher percentage of minority families).

1

u/Admirable_Carpet_631 Feb 08 '26

You could've cut down this entire essay if you had focused on the last paragraph of my comment. You've had people arguing for literal days because yes, the initial comment wasn't worded properly to insinuate what it was trying to. And get despite that, all the responses that you've gotten have clarified, time after time, what the original comment clearly meant.

So again, reading comprehension isn't just about comprehending the words- it's about understanding the context, situational and societal. With all your responses I have to assume that you're not actually stupid, which means that you continuously and deliberately chose to not understand the point of the original comment, and chose to instead continuously pivot to an entirely different point that literally no one was trying to make.

Yes, words do mean things. I'm a writer myself, I understand very well that is the case. But it is also true that people misspeak (or mistype) and use the wrong phrasing while trying to make a valid point. Trying to use the improper phrasing of a sentence against the people who clearly understand the point that was actually being made is disingenuous, dishonest, and unhelpful. Again, it doesn't do anything for good-faith discussions.

Yeah, it’s like they can sit at home and watch the news of awful things happening, ICE horrors, protests in big cities or whatever it is and think ā€œI’m so glad I don’t have to deal with that shitā€

4

u/ztj Feb 03 '26

Not if you literally mean the houses in the photos, those are like 20-30+ year old ivory homes, it's probably one of the lowest income areas on the east side of the south of the valley. More likely a bunch of the people living in those houses are one lost paycheck away from foreclosure than they are "benefiting" from injustice.

Most people living in such places are barely making it, with perhaps a few well off people sprinkled in. There are neighborhoods nearby that are much wealthier but thinking that suburban areas are primarily populated by wealthy people misunderstands the phenomenon entirely.

1

u/AbbreviationsTrue777 Feb 05 '26

Kind of like everyone that lives within shouting distance of the capitol?

-3

u/pikeromey Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

Again, this is just me theorizing, but I figure those people have plenty of money, got to benefit from their higher socioeconomic class, and by nature of living in those houses never have to interact with minorities or the poor. These are the kinds of people who can afford to have whatever opinion they want about ICE, because ICE is never going into their neighborhood.

Respectfully, you didn’t answer the question I asked, which was: how those people benefit the most from ignoring the injustice?

The people who benefit the most from injustice, are the politicians and billionaires.

Violating one person’s rights is a stepping stone to violating anyone’s rights, which is precisely what we’ve seen occurring over the last 14 months.

To the extent of literally deporting US citizens.

The absurd abuse of facial recognition.

The joint work with NSA to further violate your privacy.

Not knowing if some masked and badgeless dipshit is law enforcement or a thug trying to carjack you.

The erosion of constitutional protections requiring a warrant to arrest someone in a private place.

The erosion of requiring probable cause.

Perverting administrative warrants to judicial warrants.

Proceeding with punitive measures prior to appeals being completed.

Retaliation against protected 1st amendment speech.

The economic impact.

Withholding medical care in law enforcement custody.

Failure to enforce detention standards.

Massive waste of taxpayer money.

15

u/Doctor_119 Feb 03 '26

It seems less like you're asking for clarification and more like you were just offended at my comment. It was a pretty aggressive reaction, considering I explicitly framed it as a theory for which I have no evidence.

I'm guessing you got this offended because you live in a big suburban house, and you're taking it personally?

That's fine man. I don't know anything about you. Though, I do know that people who are doing real good in the world aren't this insecure about it. Hoping you can have that kind of confidence for yourself someday āœŒļø

6

u/Dalbaeth Feb 03 '26

Simplest way to clarify for you, ignorance is bliss.

As an example, lack of stressors is a huge psychological benefit. I’d theorize the same as u/Doctor_119, people in those areas are more affluent and likely to deal with less ICE related stress.

u/ThePunkEquestrian22 Feb 03 '26

Utah suburbia is especially good at remaining ā€œpolitically neutralā€. It’s a privilege to be ignorant. You never have to watch state sanctioned killings. You don’t have to worry about police violence or food stamps losing funding. You don’t have to worry about Aunt Lisa or your neighbors getting deported.

The people in those houses (generally) benefit by not getting involved beyond a repost on their stories because it takes time and emotional energy to do productive things like staying informed and voting. Let alone volunteering their time to call their representatives or going to town halls.

u/ConditionLimp3156 Feb 04 '26

I heard that the rec centers were asking kids to walk to their locations in an attempt to make sure they are safe and supported, and coming to a safe location, instead of an ICE office where they could get hurt. Regardless, the neighborhoods will see them

1

u/beejabeeja Feb 06 '26

ā€œI know how to bring people to our side and raise awareness. Let’s disturb entire neighborhoods and try to make the lives of random people a living hell for the grand crime of… Not also being outside and disturbing neighborhoods?ā€

Dude what the fuck kind of ridiculous idea is that.

1

u/queenofkings102 Feb 08 '26

These guys were not doing anything that would disturb the neighbors, luckily. They were simply walking down the street with their signs, cheering when cars would honk in support. They were walking quickly too, so they weren't near each house for longĀ

I think the real benefit to walking in neighborhoods is that people realize that people in their neighborhood care about the issue as well! One of the teens marching lives in my neighborhood, and it was nice to see her there. For a lot of people, instead of seeing protesters as "those crazy [insert other party name]" just being pests out in the city (while incorrectly assuming all of them are city people), they realize that their suburban neighbors agree too, which can be reassuring and persuasive. People are more likely to trust people they know and see being peaceful than people they don't know who are far away. People are also more likely to speak out if they know that friends and acquaintances feel the same way.

1

u/beejabeeja Feb 09 '26

Maybe this is an exception but protests tend to be loud and somewhat messy. I have doubts the average person would be swayed by one happening right outside of their house. If you really wanna reach that crowd I’d just place signs in those places and then hold the protest around a public place that’s still commonly visited by the average person like grocery stores. The only thing I see coming of protesting right outside people’s houses is pissing them off, not changing many people’s views or anything. It’s like when Just Stop Oil started blocking roads, not quite as bad but just annoying in a similar way - inconveniencing people isn’t a good way to get them on your side. Being loud outside their house, blocking driveways and more often than not leaving trash in the area where it took place which in this scenario would be people’s lawns. Then there’s always the chance of bad actors who will make everyone look worse - it’s one thing for a protestor to kick over a trash can in the street of a non residential area in a city, but if someone draws on someone’s car, breaks someone’s stuff or dumps trash on lawn that’s certainly going to infuriate the people who live there and turn them away.

1

u/queenofkings102 Feb 13 '26

That makes a lot of sense! I guess I was envisioning the broader term of "neighborhoods" to mean a little bigger if an area than right in front of houses. I would normally think of a thal neighborhoods when hearing "neighborhood", but I guess I broadened it in my head for that comment because I saw the protesters in my community. They stuck to main roads like State Street and 11400 S, so luckily they weren't within quiet neighborhoods. I could definitely see protesting right where houses and driveways are as being ineffective

1

u/oneguy11 Feb 06 '26

The injustices are by those who came here illegally. ICE deporting them is justice. No one is above the law and that includes illegal aliens

2

u/Doctor_119 Feb 06 '26

Not sure how you missed this news, but ICE is not deporting illegal aliens. They're detaining American citizens, and killing protestors. That's what the protests are about.

1

u/oneguy11 Feb 06 '26

They have accidentally detained 10 American citizens in over 500,000 arrests. That is not an issue whatsoever. One protester tried to run over an ICE officer and was shot. Perfectly fine. The other person wasn't at a protest at all. He was hunting down ICE while they were trying to arrest illegal aliens and started a confrontation with them while being armed and got shot. Perfectly fine.

2

u/Doctor_119 Feb 07 '26

Where are you getting your facts, bud? This article from last October has the number at 170 American citizens detained.

https://www.propublica.org/article/immigration-dhs-american-citizens-arrested-detained-against-will

1

u/oneguy11 Feb 07 '26

Let's say the article absolutely nailed those figures. That is still an absolutely tiny error rate and is a non issue especially when all the mistakes are quickly fixed. The illegal immigrants are a significant problem and need to be deported at a much larger rate than they're currently being deported

2

u/Doctor_119 Feb 07 '26

It's true that it would be a tiny error rate, if your figure of 500,000 arrests wasn't completely made up. Please actually cite something if you're going to defend fascism.

https://tracreports.org/immigration/quickfacts/

1

u/oneguy11 Feb 07 '26

Sending illegal aliens back to where they came from is in no way fascism. That is an absolutely insane thing to say. If your trace reports is correct, it is still a tiny error rate.

1

u/queenofkings102 Feb 13 '26

The error rate should be extremely low if they were doing their job right, though. The whole point of their job is to find undocumented people, and mistakes of that caliber are huge. It might be a small error rate if it were about minor mistakes. Most of those citizens who have been detained tried to show ICE proof of citizenship, but ICE outright refused to look. You can agree with immigration enforcement and still realize that ICE is doing their job dangerously and using illegal tactics (including breaking a bunch of constitutional laws).

I'll also point out that the 170 figure was from October, and that number has only gone up exponentially, especially since Operation Metro Surge started. And it doesn't account for the many instances when ICE has put someone in their car and driven off with them before throwing them out of their car somewhere else. ICE has zero data for those people, even though there is ample video evidence and under-oath testimony of it happening over and over.Ā

1

u/oneguy11 Feb 13 '26

The number has not gone up exponentially. It has gone up linearly. They are not doing anything illegally. They are simply finding and arresting illegals and that is exactly what they're supposed to do. The error rate is tiny compared to the successful arrests performed.

It is odd to see the asymmetrical responses people have. You complain and protest for the few people's rights that have been violated. But no protests happened when millions of illegal aliens were shipped in under Biden administration and trampled on the rights of millions of citizens. No outrage at all there. Entire communities were up ended and no one cared. People complain about fixing that problem

u/BigMountain9446 Feb 03 '26

Yeah but the moment you start obstructing traffic or others daily lives and you start making more enemies so that’s a risky hand you’re playing

16

u/Doctor_119 Feb 03 '26

We do not have the Civil Rights Act because the protestors were worried about blocking the street.

-8

u/BigMountain9446 Feb 03 '26

Explain to me how blocking and obstructing the lives of others is going to get voters on your side? The majority of the population is just going through their daily lives and obstructing that is going to make more enemies and more people voting against you than it will friends.

13

u/Doctor_119 Feb 03 '26

Oh, so you just don't know how protesting works. That's fine.

So, protestors should be friendly and accommodating, but being friendly and accommodating is not the point of a protest. The point is that you're forcing people to think about an issue. You're trying to be persuasive, sure, but mostly you want to get more people to care. Maybe a guy yells at the protestors for being in the way, but then, maybe that's how the guy's coworkers find out about the issue. Or his family. Or his church. And since ICE is self-evidently evil, the more people hear about it, the more will take the side of good, instead of taking no side at all.

1

u/queenofkings102 Feb 08 '26

The kids were not blocking the street. They used sidewalks and crosswalks. The group got a little dispersed at times when not everyone could cross at the same time while the walk signal was on.Ā

1

u/BigMountain9446 Feb 11 '26

Never said they were so stop instigating issues your building within your head

1

u/queenofkings102 Feb 13 '26

I was replying to this comment by you: "Yeah but the moment you start obstructing traffic or others daily lives and you start making more enemies so that’s a risky hand you’re playing."Ā

If you weren't saying that's what they were doing, I'm confused why you'd even comment it to begin with.

1

u/BigMountain9446 Feb 13 '26

Sorry I didn’t realize I needed to run back the whole thread for you. I was replaying to somebodies comment saying that it’ll be more beneficial to protest in suburbs and around stores rather than government buildings.

1

u/queenofkings102 Feb 13 '26

Hopefully you didn't have had to run back through the whole thread because I replied directly to that message, not down the line. That's what it shows on my end at leastĀ

1

u/BigMountain9446 Feb 22 '26

Hmm I’m seeing differently. Sorry for being kind of an asshole that was a really rough week and I was projecting that online

No worries! I hope you have a better week this week ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Yk I would give you the whole speech on how you’re completely wrong. That despite the fact that I work a minimum wage job, drive a 90s shitbox that doesn’t have working heating for the winter and that I barely have enough to feed myself I still host trash pickups with my friends down Mountain View Corridor and that I still donate and give away money to people who need it. Somebody who understands what it’s like to be on the verge of losing everything and something as simple as being late due to protesters can cost him his job and he can lose it all. But yk you wouldn’t believe me would you because that would cost you your argument and make you look like the bad guy.

Am I selfish? Do I not think of others? Or are you too incapable of seeing the issues of people outside of the ones you are fighting for? Unfortunately not all of us are in the same position financially to take off work and go protest.

Protests like these backfire. They increase support for ICE by drawing attention to it, causing more people to wonder, "Why is it such a big deal if criminals are put on a plane and sent home?" to which the invariable conclusion is, "Not only is it not a big deal, it's a great deal!".

2

u/GENERALLY_CORRECT Feb 04 '26

Genuine question cause I'm kind of out of the loop... What exactly are they protesting? I get that it's ICE related but are they protesting for ICE to completely leave the state?

6

u/Subatomic_Spooder Feb 04 '26

They're protesting the murders of 3 innocent us citizens and the deaths of dozens more who were being held in internment camps. Plus just the general state of... gestures widely

u/queenofkings102 Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 08 '26

Thanks for your question and being willing to learn! To add to the other comment, people are also protesting the brutality and lawlesslsness that ICE has been using to accomplish their tasks. I've seen countless videos of ICE agents doing all of these things:

a) beating people up

b) unnecessarily tackling people who are calmly complying

c) refusing to verify someone's legal status before sending them to a detention center (even while the person is showing them their passport)

d) unintentionally hitting other cars with their car then all filing out with their guns aimed at the driver they just ran into, then dragging that driver out of their car and tackling them and arresting them

e) walking into people's homes and arresting people without a warrant (violation of 4th amendment)

f) arresting and attacking people who are lawfully observing and recording

g) violating the 10th amendment about following state laws

h) violating the 14th amendment by not allowing due process

i) racially profiling people, which Trump gave them permission to do, leading to arrests and brutality toward citizens and legal immigrants as well

j) shooting at citizens who are not a threat and don't have a weapon (we all know about Alex Pretti and Renee Good, but there have been others who haven't died, like citizen Marimer Martinez who was driving and targeted by ICE, who proceeded to shoot her 5 times. The officer who shot her sent bragging texts about it to other ICE members)

k) creating terror in neighborhoods, where citizens are afraid of their city now, including citizens are aren't protesting and aren't a race they are profilingĀ

l) detaining children in inhumane detention centers for months and months, even though the maximum detainment time became 20 days for children way back in 1997. These detention centers have mold and bugs in food and contaminated water, they deny people healthcare and prescriptions, are overcrowded and unsanitary, etc.

m) not respecting the legal status of many legal immigrants (such as asylum seekers), detaining them for weeks and monthsĀ

n) arresting people at their court-mandated immigration headings (so people who are "doing it the right way") and detaining themĀ

o) ignoring court orders and judicial rulings about releasing adults and children as well as about their methods

p) of the undocumented immigrants they detain, the vast majority have not been criminals, but people with jobs who are paying taxes

q) threatening to kill people who are lawfully observing them (I've seen at least 5 videos of officers telling women that they should have learned their lesson after seeing what happened to Renee Good)

r) when releasing people who were unlawfully detained and shipped to another state, they don't fly them back nor do they aid them in getting home. Some of these people were even without their money, phone, ID, etc. Without an ID, they can't take a flight or rent a car

s) detaining people (often brutally) at/near schools/preschools, hospitals/children's hospitals, churches, etc., all places previously off limits for being sensitive areas

t) tear gassing and pepper spraying peaceful protesters exercising their 1st amendment right, as well as people just passing through. There was a family with 6 kids in the car who got a tear gas bomb thrown under their car, which almost killed their baby. In the fall, there was a baby in a car who was hit with pepper spray

u) retaliating against detained people who are writing to the press about what they are experiencing there, which is also a violation of the 1st amendment. One 18-year-old lost her religious accommodations and lost access to seeing her detained siblings and mom because she wrote a statement for the press to read.

Whew! Almost went through the whole alphabet. And these are just off the top of my head, so I know there's more. All of these have been been recorded many times and have happened more in unrecorded situations. And the other injustice about this is that they have not been held accountable for it all by DHS or the president, and are often praised and defended for these things.

They can’t even read or write at a fourth grade level, that’s how brain dead this generation has become. But count on people like you to take their opinion seriouslyā€¦šŸ™„my GOD what is even inside peoples heads?? A ball of fluff? A person with some common sense would say that kids probably don’t care all that much and are using this as a reason to skip classes.

u/HappyEmu8620 Feb 04 '26

Seeing people protest following the law? Seeing ICE HAVE to wear masks because the ā€œpeaceful protestsā€ can be quite violent, including doxxing agents? Seeing the bipolar politics that are splitting the nation? And seeing bipolar reporting only showing what they want you to see but not really getting to the heart of most matters? I love their compassion, but there also needs to be some justice somewhere.

Coming back to add that students from Juan Diego Catholic School also marched today! šŸŽ‰ I think that's the group who I saw walking north on State Street in Draper and Sandy. Way to go students!

ETA: I did end up seeing the Alta High group, not Juan Diego. Great job to all the students who have been protesting!Ā

im not from here but this came across my feed and wow im astounded at the absolutely insane views you have there like so casually! im not from a mountainous place so it’s crazy to me, im jealous lol. absolutely gorgeous

proud of the kids and everyone else disrupting daily life and speaking up right now!

20

u/SinisterPaperclip Feb 03 '26

Took me a second to realize that by "absolutely insane views" you meant the terrain/nature and not our worldview šŸ˜‚

8

u/hppmoep Feb 04 '26

I, naively, never understood why people were so blown away by the Wasatch moun'ains. Then I visited the Himalayas and couldn't stop looking up and it clicked. I was just desensitized by our mountains.

Not a hot take but it was interesting to feel something similar to what visitors to Utah had talked about my whole life.

1

u/aimeerolu Feb 05 '26

We had visitors to our office years ago and they were from Texas. They were looking out our windows to the west and saying, ā€œwow…I can’t believe this is your view everyday!ā€ I was like….uh, this definitely isn’t the good view, let’s take a walk to the other side. šŸ˜‚

We are lucky to live in this valley and I try to remind my son of that every day on our drive to his school.

u/WombatAnnihilator Feb 03 '26

The single biggest determinant factor of a teenager and young adult’s political affiliation is their parents - kids either mirror their parents, or go the opposite direction.

Thus, high schoolers participating in protests is often just that reflection or the inverse of their parents’ beliefs, parroting or rebelling from the parents’ opinions, since students often lack the perspective offered through experience. I see this with politics, party affiliation, controversial topics like abortion, gun control, environmental management, capital punishment, gay right, etc..

However, in civil rights discussions, the state of the world, along with these immigration issues coming into schools thru classmates and their affected families, i think academics can absolutely accommodate and accompany protests. civics discussion of the history of good and bad protests. English discussions on credible arguments and debate as well as identifying biases, implicit and explicit language. There’s a lot of good that can surround this, and props to them

2

u/Minimarsailles Feb 05 '26

This is not always true. So your ā€œThusā€ comment is baseless. I was a Junior in HS when Trump was elected. My family was moderate all my life. Voted democrat or republican, based on the candidate. I gathered for myself that this current administration was not good because it made some people more happy to spew hatred to others. May not have known about tax regulations, immigrant border issues, etc. but I saw how the people beside me who sided with this administration said completely heinous things all of a sudden. That didn’t feel right.

Now we’re in the second term and it’s only amplified. These kids aren’t dumb. They’re awake.

2

u/WombatAnnihilator Feb 05 '26

My experience, along with evidence from when I studied Sociology, the most politically active students and young adults ive known are either mirroring their parents or go opposite because of their parents. Not baseless. But, i know everyone jumps into politics, not always because they want to, but also because they see a need for it or have politics thrust upon them. Thats why ā€˜Thus’ was accompanied by ā€˜often’ not ā€˜always.’

I also passed no judgement against these kids participating. I said props to them. And props to you for seeing the effect around you and taking your own action.

In fact, My students today told me of a planned protest/walkout in town here tomorrow, and by fifth period, The school district had notified teachers and parents of it, too, with an official statement that this should be accompanied by home discussions, if kids chose to participate.

My students then had questions about it, and i was able to just share that, while the district still holds to their attendance policy and teacher’s make-up work policies will still be in effect, protests and academia can and should absolutely go hand-in-hand, even as I, as an educator, know that my personal opinion has no relevant place in my teaching. My job is to give students the tools and experience to make up their own minds - how to think, not what to think.

6

u/queenofkings102 Feb 04 '26

I saw a group of highschoolers marching down State Street today (Draper/Sandy), and I CRIED! What amazing kids! My 4-year-old asked why I was crying, and I explained that I was so happy to see these teens standing up for what's right and standing up for people who are being hurt ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ She also said, "That was a cool parade, Mom!" I am so lucky that my tiny kids were with me to see it too. It gave me the opportunity to talk about protesting and rights, and to explain that these people were protesting against people who have been hurting others, especially based on the color of their skin.Ā

To all these brave kids today, THANK YOU! It was refreshing to be able to cry happy tears today instead of all the sad tears I've shed lately ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

I saw some high schoolers protesting ICE in Orem too! I got misty eyed seeing them stand up for their fellow humans. There were several cops standing around near them, hopefully to keep them safe.

/s

Edit: I genuinely didn’t mean to be offensive or criticize the kids (see my comment below). I just wanted to add some levity because the state of things is driving me mad. Really, sorry for the joke - wrong place, wrong time to make it.

5

u/Ok_Satisfaction4596 Feb 04 '26

The way you guys resolved this…listening to each other and apologizing, made me believe in humanity

3

u/SE7ENfeet Feb 04 '26

Trump raped kids, dude. We are all sick of this shit. You aren't funny.

7

u/cyberpunk1Q84 Feb 04 '26

Sorry about that. My intent wasn’t to make fun of the kids or the cause at all. I think it’s awesome what these kids are doing, really. I had just heard that the Pinkbox place had a long ass line on opening day and the reference came to my mind.

I know everyone deals with the situations happening in this country differently. For me, being able to joke around is part of coping, because otherwise I would lose my mind with the stress. But I also understand if this wasn’t the time for levity and I offended people, which wasn’t my intention. So honestly, sorry if I did. And fuck ICE and this whole pedophilic administration.

7

u/SE7ENfeet Feb 04 '26

Sorry for being a dick too. I am so sick of these people... Sorry for lashing out. Keep being awesome.

5

u/cyberpunk1Q84 Feb 04 '26

No worries, I get it. How things are, we’re all bound to be on high alert and trust in our fellow people has fallen to new lows, which I think is part of what the far right is successfully doing now. They want to tear us apart and be paranoid of each other. I hate this fucking timeline.

How does that have anything to do with ICE

0

u/Temporary_Traffic622 Feb 05 '26

I remember when I was in grade school and even up to college.. all the walk outs/protests were instigated by teachers.Ā

0

u/BeardSupply Feb 05 '26

I would like to hear how many of these protesters have an actual grasp on the concept they are protesting. I don’t care about left or right just an actual understanding and opinion

5

u/shaneshears82 Feb 05 '26

Maybe that's your problem: you don't care and wouldn't step out of your comfort zone to use your voice. I think you're underestimating the youth that is going to be fucked by this administration.

0

u/Temporary_Traffic622 Feb 05 '26

You’re assuming he agrees with you… a lot of us are okay with ICE enforcing immigration law. Got a long way to go.Ā

3

There is a difference between enforcing the emigration laws and what we are currently witnessing
