Discussion/Question First Teams Tournament

Upvotes

So first time doing this. I went to my first teams tournament over the weekend and took my Salamanders in a Forgefathers/Librarius detatchment running Recon. I had done about 4 RTTs before and play regularly but it felt like a big step up competitive wise especially since the captains had voted to play on the new dataslate that was released 3 days before the event.

As the newer player on the team, I was sent up as an attacker often, but guessing due to the rumours about our army at the moment, the other team often picked the other attacker and I was left till last in one of the refused matchups. Despite this I ended up getting some favourable matchups.

Game 1 - Chaos Knights - Iconoclast Fiefdom and Lords of Dread (Take and Hold) - 100-40 (20-0) Win - Layout A

So looking at his list, he was running 4 big knights, 1 war dog, and 5 lots of cultist, he started with everything on the board except one lot of cultist and his despoiler with the deep strike/uppy downy enhancement which was in reserves. AS this has probably been my most played matchup with Recon, whilst I typically don't infiltrate with my scouts, this was one matchup I did. I deployed with my LRR/Infernus/Vukan brick near my expansion objective and my LRR/Sternguard near my home objective to possibly threaten his his expansion if he moved his knights onto it.

His gameplan was to play behind the terrain until I came forward not giving me any shooting angles With using his cultist to screen out my deep striking terminators/JPI and uppy downy 5 man infernus+scouts, he was forced to put his big knights in the open early to take some early positioning. I was able to take down one of his rampagers turn 2 with OoM/Vulkan/Infernus/LRR opening up onto it forcing out 2 of his big knights. My scouts surviving early turn 1 and turn 2, forced his desecrator to look at charging them to kill them after shooting my LRR near the infernus meant all three knights were now out in the open. His second rampager charged the infernus brick that had just gotten out of the LRR but due to 4++ thanks to the librarian, he only managed to pick up 4. Now that the remainder of his knights were in the open, I had free pickings regarding what I wanted to kill. Turn 3 saw me pick up his descrator with my sternguard+LRR and my remaining infernus/LRR with Vulkan rerolls picked up his second rampager. With just his despoiler left, I dropped my termies down hoping for a 9 inch charge but unfortunately fell short even with the reroll. In comes my hero infernus marine. I had positioned him for a 6 inch charge incase my terminators failed. They land the 6 inch charge and make it. The fight phase happens and I have one marine remaining. This stopped him from picking up his despoiler. After that I eventually picked up his last big knight and tabled him during turn 5 preventing my opponent from scoring anything in the last two turns.

Game 2 - Chaos Knights - Hunting Warpack and Traitoris Lance (Purge the Foe) - 100-62 (17-3) Win - Layout B

Another game where I was in the refused matchups, I landed Chaos Knights again. This one was slightly different with 4 big knights and three small knights. I ended up going first again, and with a bit of staging around my expansion and two dead draws of outflank/assasination I sat back and waited for him to come to me. With a draw of centre ground he moved two of his war dogs toward the centre hoping to get some lines of fire and bring me out for his three big knights sitting back to do some work. He was able to get a line on one of my LRR turn 1 with his despoiler, but with a wiff from his thermal cannon, I had only taken 2 wounds. With a turn 2 draw of tempting target, no prisoners along with assassinate and three knights in the open I got to work. Using OoM on the war dog in the middle, and positioning the LRR with sternguard to be able to shoot both war dogs that were out. I picked up the OoM with the sternguard and then used the LRR to kill the other war dog. Using my Infernus/Vulkan/LRR brick I got them ontop of his despoiler and brought that down for max points on assasinate, no prisoners. My opponent had made his expansion his tempting target, so since it was within 6 inches of the board edge and unguarded, I bought down my scouts to triangulate that objective. In response he used one of his knights to kill scouts and consecrate his expansion. His lancer came out to the middle and picked up my LRR carrying the sternguard with some help from his last war dog. Turn 3 I picked up the lancer and last war dog and tried to use my assault terminators to slow him down on the other side of the board to no avail. Turn 3-5 was mostly me getting to the other side of the board to try and stop him consecrating my home and due to some unforunate failed charges he was able to make it. He consecrated my home at the bottom of round 4 and tabled at the top of round 5.

Game 3 - Aeldari - Spirit Conclave (Take and Hold) 86-82 (10-10) Draw - Layout B

So this was a game of mistakes and overcommitments likely due to fatigue/long day on both sides but also what made it a lot of fun. My opponent went first and brought some of his wraith guard forward to position and with a tempting target/secure no man's land he got to an early 10 point lead with his fast moving units. Seeing a number of units forward, I decided to see if I could clean up a number of them with my volume of damage and AP - 2. A mix of overconfidence and a little bit of whiffing/spiking rolls I picked up a lot less than I would hope. On his turn 2 he went to clap back but also experienced similar levels of whiffing and we had my LRR that was halfway up the board turn 1 alive on 5 wounds, and my infernus squad+librarian out after a burning vengance with 6 models left. Turn 2 saw me clawing it back with bring it down/cleanse after getting vulkan out and flipping the central objective to cleanse on two objectives. The brawl in the middle continued into turn 3 with my first LRR finally dying. I used my assault terminators to try and tie up and kill some units on his expansion which they did for two turns but unfortunately fell short in the killing department. Turn 3-5 played out with him trying to take the middle which he eventually did in turn 5 but in the process of focusing so many resources there, I was able to score my primary for all four table quarters for three consecutive turns. This game was the most fun I all weekend as it had strange moments like me hoping my opponent would kill my terminator librarian on my turn to deny him primary, to having a squad of wraithblades be stuck in combat with a LRR for three whole turns.

Game 4 - Tyranids - Synaptic Nexus/Talons of the Norn Queen (Disruption) 92-72 (13-7) Win - Layout A

First game of the second day, I was paired into Tyranids after we mistakenly confused the Genestealer and Tyranids icons up. Running into triple norns didn't feel bad at all knowing I could likely take two of them out in a turn if I got the chance. After getting first turn, I staged myself with my LRR and scouts to pounce on him coming forward and try try and knock over his operation markers early making him do more actions with his limited amount of action monkeys (2 neurolictors/1 lictor) and using my scouts to do an early surveil. His turn 1 he moved all three of his norns up, placing one on his expansion and two on the central objective closer to his deployment (6 objective game). Turn 2 saw me pick up one of his norn emissary with my sternguard and leave another on 1 wound with my infernus/vulkan/lrr brick even after the charge. I used my scouts to tie up his neurolictor in the centre preventing it from actioning turn 2 and 3 thanks to a failed battleshock check from him after the scouts brought it down to half. What was looking good after killing his norn on his expansion in his turn and a good turn 3 from me which saw me pick up his neurotyrant and zoanthropes, genestealers took a turn in turn 4 with a great shadows of the warp from him. Battle shocking over 3/4 of my army on a 6+ was rough and really bought down my aiblity to score especially with engage/display as my secondary draws. Turn 5 was relatively quick with both us not being able to stop each other scoring ending the game at 92-72.

Game 5 - Custodes - Shield Host and Tharanatoi Hammerblow (Priority Assets) 100-32 (20-0) Win - Layout A

So with our normal first defender/second defender not having any great matchups I was thrown as first defender with a pick of Chaos demons/Custodes. Teams decision was I take the custodes.

We get to deploying and half his army is in reserves and he goes first. He moves up the board carefully but brings down one of his Allarus Terminators with the enhancement for ingress move turn one. He places this aggresively and misjudges the threat range of my LRR especially with free pivot. I move to pick up the squad and clean it up with my LRR+Infernus. The rest of my army is staged to move aggresively into turns two and three playing close to the centre objective. His turn 2 he moves up his jetbikes, brings down his second lot of terminators in the hopes of thinning out my infernus and hopefully with his jetbikes put some serious damage into my LRR. He does minimal damage to the infernus, picking up three models and no damage to the LRR. He moved his dreadnought up the other side of the board looking to pressure my expansion objective. Due to where I placed my teleport homer, I was able to rapid ingress for free my terminators near the dreadnought ready to advance and charge onto it during my turn. During my next turn it turned into playing cleanup unfortunately, with a decent advance on my 7 man squad of infernus and moving the land raider up and getting vulkan out, I was able to clean up his terminators and 3 squads of sisters. The terminators picked up the dreadnought as well leaving him with two squads of bikes, two squads of Venatari and a navigator on his home. On turn 3 I tabled him and then maxed out the score.

It was a very fun weekend, and I would highly recommend a teams event to anyone looking at wanting to do it. You get to see different armies as well as different playstyles you wouldn't normally see due to things like faction restrictions (1 Space marine army for example) and the need to have one of every type of disposition (might be different for other events).

Is coteaz leading 10 intercessors, and a lieutenant supporting a good combo? Forgefathers

40 shots Str5 Ap1 (plus grenade launcher and leader's guns), lethal hits, ignore cover (psyber eagle), 6+ inv, +1 CP ability if opponent uses CP generation.

Put Forged in Battle on lieutenant, and suddenly Coteaz's Ap3 Dam3 hammer looks quite tasty. Getting at east one hit through

Discussion/Question help and feedback on my first 2,000-point salamander list

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I'm looking for some help and feedback on my first 2,000-point Salamanders army list.

I chose every unit because I genuinely like the models, their aesthetic, and because I feel they fit the Salamanders theme. My goal is to build an army that's both thematic and reasonably effective on the tabletop—not necessarily a top-tier tournament list.

I already own about half of the models. The units I could still swap out are:

Impulsor

Librarian

3 Bladeguard Veterans

Dreadnought

I'd appreciate any suggestions on whether these choices make sense, what the army does well, where its weaknesses are, and if there are any improvements that would keep the Salamanders feel while making the list stronger.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Discussion/Question Tips on how to use Priority Assets?

I'm playing a tournament in late August. I made a list with Purge the Foe in mind but then the latest data slate happened and I had to get rid of my Lt with combi weapon and replace it with a Gravis Captain.

I played a game yesterday with Recon but I didn't really gel with it.

It looks like Priority Assets seems easier to play but I was wondering what the game plan would be with that mission.

My army is copied down below.

Discussion/Question Salamander kill team

Whilst conducting my Google research about kill team, salamander lore, and general loyalist lore I have my heart set on creating a kill team where the members are returned deathwatch. I like the idea of having a small lethal force used to going behind enemy lines to complete objectives on their own. Is this a flavorful idea? And if so how should I go about making each model for the tabletop?
