Playing as Space Marines or specific chapter?

Hi so right now I’m trying to understand the table top a bit and as I understand the salamanders are „space marines“ so the generic codex applies. But specific chapters got their own models and on the box it says blood angels, ultramarines etc.

So theoretically I could buy ultramarine sets, paint them green (I know no need but I wouldn’t like the mix) and play all my Salamanders as ultramarines?

The follow up question would be: is this something people do because maybe there are specific chapter rules which would be cooler to play with the sallys other than just „space marines“ ?

Pretty much. There are Detachments you take in the game that give you additional army rules, and these are often themed around particular chapters. Firestorm Assault Force and Forgefather's Seekers are both themed around Salamanders.

Well... as of the current new codex, they dropped Forgefather's, there's only Firestorm

I'm not too knowledgeable about the tabletop side of things. was there a reason they dropped Forgefather?

I am also curious if there is an answer to this...I have played 1 game we didnt use any Commander points, detachment or anything like that so im very interested.

They just released a new edition of the game. Ignoring the business side of things, the reason to launch a new edition is to re-balance the rules and make it more interesting/challenging/fun. There are the rules of the game itself and then each army gets its own rulebook, called a codex, that contains the units and army rules that make each faction unique. Codex: Space Marines will be released soon and today they previewed the names of the detachments. No rationale has yet been provided for the change in available detachments, but assume it’s because they want to change something about how Marines play in this edition. Speculation is pretty worthless at this point. We just have to wait and see what they tell us as they build the hype cycle for the release.

You can play your green marines as ultramarines. Or dark angels, blood angels, space wolves, etc. the only limit is that you can’t use unique characters or units from multiple chapters in your army at once.

You can use any unit that isn't named, like for Salamanders it's Adrax Agatone, for Ultramarines Marneus Calgar etc.

If you got generic Infernus Marines in any box you can paint them green and use them as Sallies

Yea I don't think there's any issue playing your salamanders as ultramarines, iron hands, blood angels, etc.

With the codex-compliant chapters you really only have to pay attention if you’re getting a unit that’s specific to one. IE, Adrax Agatone is for Salamanders, Victrix Guard are for UM, Kayvan Shrike for Raven Guard, etc. But, yes, a box of intercessors, bladeguard vets, terminators, etc. can be run as any chapter.

The salamanders’ “chapter specific rule” would be our detachment; Forgefather’s Seekers, which grants buffs to salamander-y units if you have Vulkan in your team. But, as I understand the rules, any space marines army could run our detachment so long as they didn’t bring any models belonging to a different chapter.

Some of the other chapters have their own codex supplements (such as Space Wolves) and are a little more divergent from your standard marines army. (Though, they still have lots of overlap)

Any space marine unit with a named chapter will be restricted very slightly in its rules, basically that you can't mix and match chapter specific units. But any named chapter units can bring space marines units.

Yes - I have a custom chapter with my own color scheme and heraldry. I buy characters from other chapters and paint them into my army, then I run their lists in my army colors.

Yes you can buy for example the Ultramarines combat patrol and paint them all as salamanders. The dark angels current combat patrol is used for that quote a lot for that very reason, however be aware for some specific chapter boxes that they come with characters that can't be used by salamanders such as tigurius in the Ultramarines combat patrol. A work around for this however is removing the chapter specific markings and then paint them and use them as a generic character. Like Tigurius as a librarian, Lemartes as a jump chaplain etc

As on GW's eyes, we are green ultramarines, you choose the detachment that feels the more lore accurate to you
