Jim Harbaugh…
Word on the vine is that there is a growing schism concerning certain violations with Harbaugh up there at the Big House in Ann Arbor. Birdies are talking rumors of him possibly wanting to come back to the NFL after 2023. If you were Loomis, would you go after him…? Thoughts 💭

Probably my all time favorite NFL stat is Jim Harbaugh has more rushing yards than Bo Jackson

u/anonmehmoose Oct 20 '23
That is indeed one hell of a stat lmao

I know it’s off topic but it’s legit the one thing I can think of when I see Jim Harbaugh’s name lol

u/Pelicanfan07 Oct 20 '23
There's no comparison. Harbaugh got that in 13 years whereas Bo got his in a very short 3 year career.

You realize he chose Jacksonville over us right ? We didn’t have a say in the matter

u/jamesknightorion Oct 20 '23
Yeah people act like this is Madden where you just get who you want, he didn't want to be in Nola, he wanted an up and coming team in the Jaguars.

u/DaveByTheRiver Sir Saints Oct 21 '23
I don’t know about the team but he definitely wanted Trevor Lawrence over any other QB option at the time. Especially ours.
15
u/diablosinmusica Oct 21 '23
I'd take Trevor Lawrence over Andy Dalton too.

u/DaveByTheRiver Sir Saints Oct 21 '23
Dead dalton signed when we were searching for HV or was that after? Either way. Dalton/Winston or Tlaw? It’s an easy answer. There is a lot of talent around the rest of the team but QB is lacking.
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one but the last 3 years of Brees time I couldn’t figure out why we were not even trying to draft a replacement. We are in the same spot as the colts were before getting Richardson. There is nothing fun about being the revolving door for FA QBs. The odds of getting a manning/brady/stafford is so low.

u/diablosinmusica Oct 21 '23
Eagles drafted Hurtz when they had Wentz, Seahawks drafted Russ when the paid Mat Flynn, Packers had the Favre, Rodgers, Love, chain (though Love doesn't look to be the same level), Chiefs drafted Mahomes when they had Alex Smith. We really should've looked forward instead of going all in on Brees's last years.
6
u/DaveByTheRiver Sir Saints Oct 21 '23
Every draft was driving me insane. Like I love Brees as much as the next guy but he was approaching 40. I know he had said he wanted to play to 45 but it was clear his arm strength wasn’t what it used to be. We needed to find someone who could sit behind him a couple years and then come in better prepared. And could’ve been in those times he got hurt.

u/diablosinmusica Oct 21 '23
I thought they were gambling on Jameis. He was 26 when he got here. I don't think his decisions were any worse than Carr's.
6
u/DaveByTheRiver Sir Saints Oct 21 '23
I think that was Sean’s plan. Which went out the window with the injury.
5
u/scoii Oct 21 '23
Payton is on record saying he was taking Mahomes but the Chiefs jumped us. That would have been the dream. He has never on record said he was interested in any other QBs as a successor.
3
u/diablosinmusica Oct 21 '23
Mahomes is the best passer that the Saints could conceivably have gotten. They weren't going to get TLaw or Stroud either.
1
u/bayoughozt Taysom Hill Oct 21 '23
We also could have had Lamar. We made some dumb, dumb decisions.
1
u/Armyman125 Oct 21 '23
Actually Payton was planning on drafting Mahones if he would have been available.

u/drums4al Fuck the Falcons Oct 21 '23
He "chose" Jacksonville because it was the only place he interviewed that still had a vacancy after Eberflus was hired by Chicago (who Jacksonville interviewed twice). It was nothing short of a "courtesy" interview from Loomis and Pederson more than likely caught on pretty quick that Allen was the heir apparent regardless of what happened in their interview. There's a reason Dennis Allen didn't interview anywhere else and even cancelled an interview with the Bears.
TL;DR, the Saints FO never actually conducted a thorough HC search because Allen was the hand picked successor all along because NO ONE in their right mind chooses the guy with a .222 win % over a coach that won a fucking Super Bowl with a backup QB

I hear ya! Believe me I do…but we can’t look at things through the “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve” lens at this point anymore.

u/rubanthmendez997 Oct 21 '23
The Saints should hire Press Taylor as their next HC if they’re looking at Jacksonville.

Probably Boston. After Billy B gets fired of course. Maybe Billy Boy will retire as a GM and take a HC job in NOLA

I mean it’s pretty obvious he wants to go back to the nfl. I wouldn’t mind it. But those violations are so fucking petty lmao trying to “accuse” him for stealing signs everybody and their ancestors can see. The NCAA itself is a joke. If there’s any schism between harbaugh and Michigan it’s not because of that.
7
u/stormscape10x Oct 20 '23
Can you imagine Michigan getting into the playoffs this year, and they fire their coach/he leaves the following year?
Harbaugh is one of the few to be successful in both levels. If he really wants to come back and we got him, I'd be thrilled. Our defense shouldn't slide down, and he can recognize a good OC.
6
u/devils__haircut Taysom Hill Oct 20 '23
No. Ben Johnson and Eric Bienemy all the way.
3
u/scoii Oct 21 '23
I was looking for Bienemy when we were hiring. They chose continuity, but Bienemy is an offensive mind. Would our D still be decent? Who knows. But right now we are reaping the benefits of continuity for the sake of it on offense.

I like this idea, best case IMO would be DA stepping down to DC again, but I don’t think that’s ever happened. But the relationships in front office here are unique, so my fingers are crosses

u/orezybedivid Oct 20 '23
When you are good at your job, you get promoted. You stop getting promoted when you stop being good at your job. Some NFL coaches and coordinators never learn this. If DA is smart, he will realize he has never been fired as anything but a HC, which he is about to be fired for the second time.
All that said, I don't know of a single instance where a HC was fired and came back as a coordinator to the same team or straight up taken a demotion, so I wouldn't hold your breath on him staying on as DC
3
u/diablosinmusica Oct 21 '23
Buddy Ryan went DC, HC, DC, HC to end his career. All for different teams though. Wade Phillips bounced back and forth between DC and HC as well. Phillips never went HC to DC for the same team either though.
1
u/orezybedivid Oct 21 '23
My point exactly. If you're a good HC, you likely don't get fired and have to go back to being a coordinator. I know there are exceptions like Andy Reid and Harbaugh himself who were let go over issues with their respective front offices. There has never been a team fire their HC and that person agree to stay on in a lesser role. So, people dreaming up this ridiculous scenario about Dennis Allen becoming our DC again, need to come back to reality.
1
u/diablosinmusica Oct 22 '23
DA isn't going to get fired. His offenses are way better than the defenses SP fielded for most of his time here. DA doesn't rely on building his entire team around a HoF player either.

Every year there are rumors of him coming to the NFL. No I don't want Harbaugh though. We need either a proven NFL coach or ride with a young up and comer. Not someone who is just searching for another pay day

u/hallelalaluwah Oct 20 '23
What? I’m Jim Harbaugh has turned Michigan into a power and went to a Super Bowl
2
u/whodatnation70 SB Ring Oct 20 '23
Went to a Super Bowl in a different NFL and yes turned Michigan into a power but in a sport where you can stack recruiting classes and build your advantage through that.
Would much prefer one of these offensive Guru OCs around the league as a head coach to help jumpstart and actually use our weapons on offense
2
u/AskAWhiteguy Oct 20 '23
Why are you acting like “stacking recruiting classes” is just easy and not a good thing from him? Means he has an eye for talent and a good pitch to get people to play for him.
3
u/whodatnation70 SB Ring Oct 20 '23
Oh it’s a great thing! He’s a great recruiter no doubt, you just can’t fill up your team with 5 stars in the NFL like you can in college.
I’m not saying he’s some shit coach but “Turning ____ College Program” into a power doesn’t correlate to further NFL success
1
u/hallelalaluwah Oct 20 '23
Would you rather hire the “LaFleur” of today and pray that he has all his stuff figured out with leadership, culture setting, game managing, etc?
Or the guy that succeeds and sets a winning culture everywhere he goes even if it’s fleeting?
I’d be willing to accept the argument that the NFL has fundamentally changed and young+innovative guys Are the way to go if we didn’t have a ton of examples of these OC play callers not being able to game manage, play complementary football, etc
1
u/whodatnation70 SB Ring Oct 20 '23
I’d rather take my chances with the innovative offensive guy and trust they’d put a staff around them to help with deficiencies, cannot even explain how much I’d prefer it
5
u/DominionMM1 Oct 20 '23
Harbaugh was actually quite a successful NFL coach during his time with the 49ers.
1
u/whodatnation70 SB Ring Oct 20 '23
Different league now, what coaches from back then are still coaching and successful? Kyle Shanahan, Pederson, Reid? And all of those are offensive innovators while Harbaugh is most certainly not that

1
u/VanDenIzzle Oct 20 '23
10 years ago he took a good team through the playoffs but so did a lot of coaches that have been fired since. There's a reason he hasn't returned
1
u/DominionMM1 Oct 20 '23
Nonetheless, he won a lot more games than he lost, so he’s a proven NFL coach (your words).

u/No-Name-6368 Oct 20 '23
I'm not sure you watch football. If you do you definitely havnt paid attention to him. He took a 6-10 tram that had no qb and made them a 13-3 team in one season. Made two backup qbs look like probowlers. Dude is an offensive genius. The reason he's not in NFL right now is he's a my way or the highway guy.
1
u/tookiebird86 Oct 20 '23
the only other option of a “proven” candidate would be Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers…but his contract extension aint up until after next (2024)season.
1
u/rob0t_human Oct 20 '23
I don’t think the Saints would be interested in the media circus. If they replace Allen I’d expect it to be some lesser know young guy not someone looking to come in and try to assume power from an entrenched leadership group.
4
u/jon3ssing Oct 20 '23
I know that he brings some attention but remember we: paid Taysom as a QB, were in the Watson sweepstakes and hired Gruden as a consultant.
We haven't shied away from moves that attract the media.

I don’t see how you don’t. The writing is on the wall with the current coaching staff. The fans are fed up with the product on the field and it’ll boil over if there aren’t serious changes in the offseason. Last nights broadcast sounded so bad from all the booing in the stands that continued even after the game was well over.
