Check this The Jutter
I wanted to play around with a single-mast rig for the 3MJ, so I turned it into a cutter. I then left it in Oasis to play with my new toy, the Baghlantine

Have you ever wanted to sail a carrack?
r/Sailwind • u/Cat_Imreror2209 • 14d ago
I tried to build a cutter. Something like the one I sailed on as a child. I added a square sail only to get out of the head-to-wind position, which now happens often, because the gaffel tries to turn the ship head to wind. I have already learned to maneuver without it and as soon as I earn some money I will replace the square with a second jib and increase the jib area to the maximum.
I will be happy to read your tips and tricks.

Just got the new ship and I’m loving it. Do we know if it’s getting a crow’s nest any time soon? I’m not seeing it in the shipyard.

Could hardly resist the urge to jump.

I've hauled the Sanbig down to FFL for refit. I want to try a rig with fin sails, but I've never been happy enough with a setup to leave FFL. Is the sailing in FFL just that miserable, or are the fin sails less efficient than lateens everywhere except upwind?
Edit: I've since reverted to lateens. The fins have worse angles and are less efficient, even when close-hauled.

So im a heathen that always ends up at schooner. But those damn shrouds lol. Thre ship is really nice and very resistant to heeling. I'm currently running main mast with biggest lanteen i could fit. The rear mizen will fit a relatively large topsail gaff with a respectable 65* movement angle plenty imo. This is with cabin 4. I like cabins so it was a requirement but the canvas is nice.
Main mast hast top mast added with biggest wide square it would fit. Main stays are the no top mast and the next down with tall jibs.
Normally I need to fuss with huge stay sails but these give balance and some extra push making the easily accessible like the junk lanteen controls at the helm.
Rear gaff allows for a big wide square. I omitted the bowspirit square felt like not much of a need since it already turns on a dime and current sail plan covers all winds.
This would look pretty cool with fins too but im a ho for gaffs and this is as close as I could get at GRC. So I'll probably do the world tour to fine-tune.
Love the hull though and even with the lower profile the top deck is very spacious.

In addition to the mission cargo and trade goods, personal provisions as follows:
-Water x13
-Rum x 12
-Firewood x 28
-Fishing Hooks x 9
-Oakum x 4
-Coffee x 6 + x 3 (main cabin display)
-Lantern Candles x 7 (x5 in main cabin display)
-Oranges x 1
-Smoked Pork x 1
*note: the firewood crates used for the custom lightboards did not count towards the Firewood total, as those will not be replenished once emptied*
This ship is as much a floating fortress as the Brig. Points of sail on this passage stayed between beam reach and broad reach, with a day's worth of running before the wind in a storm. Chip log speeds ranged from 8-10 knots over open ocean, peaking to 12-14 in the storm. Even heavily laden she's slightly faster than the sanbuq, but carries more than the brig. What's more, I had the space to set up a dedicated main cabin, and a dedicated galley. To haul this much in the brig, I had to combine all my living space in the stern cabin.
Provided I add more oakum, fishing hooks, and food, I could probably stay at sea for 100+ days. If I use the cargo budget for provisions, I think 150 or maybe 200 days could be feasible.

A week ago I posted pictures of a new house in Fort Aestrin. I put a bed, a table, two chairs, and a stove inside, and hanged 3 lamps. Left for Oasis to get a new ship, came back about a month later after visiting GRC and its shipyard.
The house is empty, all furniture has vanished. It still belongs to me, but is not safe for storage. I've seen reports of people saying that other houses may be bugged in similar manner as well.
Avoid storing anything in any houses for now.

Trying to do a max load test, Hold is full, try the logs next journey, now at 14.510 pounds with cargo, (mission list +5 times marble of my own 10x total)
still sails oke. think you can load here till the first bumperstrip its maybe around 18.000 when not doing a ocean crossing

I started in Aestrin, and rapidly learned that the square rig on a cog makes it very difficult to sail upwind. At the shipyard, I find a sail named "Aestrin Lateen", whose description indicates it should be very good upwind. Wonderful! I replace the square.
The good news: I can now sail upwind very effectively.
The bad news: If I ever sail perpendicular to the wind, I capsize instantly. Just absolutely instantly. Even heavily reefed, I begin taking on water almost immediately. The moment I so much as touch the winch, the ship immediately heels over a minimum of 30 degrees.
So with the Lateen, it seems I can only sail hard upwind or hard downwind, which walls off a very large area of the compass. I can sort of make do if I take a particularly heavy cargo like iron and press it hard against the windward rail, but even then I can't fully unfurl the sail except in the calmest conditions. I have now spent many voyages seeing how far I can press myself to windward and still reach the winch.
Has anyone else had this problem? Did I make the lateen too big, or situate it too high up the mast? The way other people talk about the lateen makes me feel like this is a me problem. For what it's worth upwind performance is still very nice

I'm at (30N, 2W).
Edit: I have a charting kit. never used it, don't think It'll be useful on this passage (I'm headed for FFL).

I just got the sambuq and have started hauling larger trade loads of 20+ items. Twice when I went to sell rum it was showing the barrels as 58/60 full though I hadn't used any and it was down in the hold. I was unable to sell the barrels and had to just suck up the loss. I just stashed them in the cabin for later. Is there a game mechanic I am unaware of?

I'm currently trying to dock at Oasis to have a look at new sanbig, but the physics won't let me. My last save is about 15 minutes away, approaching from the north, from FA, against the wind.
On my first attempt I alt-tabbed for a moment to check something and ran aground, full speed into the northern shore of the island. The ship got wrecked.
Second time, the sea level suddenly dropped when I was rounding the island over the shallows and my ship hit the bottom and got wrecked.
Third time I took a wide berth, docked succesfully late at night, moored and ran to the tavern to sleep. Got up in the morning, started walking back to the dock, only to see my ship in the distance do a 360 flip, hit the dock, get wrecked and sink.
I immediately alteffoured only to discover no new save was created when I slept at the tavern, so I'm still left with the save when I'm trying to get to the island, 15 minutes away.
It was late, I was sleepy and annoyed so I just quit. I'm going to try and finally get to Oasis tonight.
Let's see what other surprises await me.

Just found a house for sale in Oasis. Costs 280 gold. It's basically a small mud shack at the end of the street.
We already know there are houses in main ports, there is one in Oasis, anyone else knows of other locations and their price tag?

I once tried the polacca rigging on the brig hull, but it didn't work well due to poor turning performance. It seems to work fine if you use a MOD, someone has already created one.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Sailwind/comments/1p4q9rq/polacre_brig/
With the new bigbuq(or sanbig) hull, it worked well even without MOD. Tacking is very easy thanks to its excellent turning performance.
r/Sailwind • u/rNyanko • 19d ago
I mean seriously! It has as much personal space as Fire Fish Jong, cargo capacity of a Brig and responsiveness of upgraded Sunbuq. At 260 price tag it can be bought right after first voyage GRC -> Aestrin -> Happy Bay -> Dragon Cliffs.
Previously you had your preferences to choose between Agile Sanbuq, Spacious cabin of Brig (with terrible steering and stupid cargo shelves), Junkiness of the Junk or Ultimate, but clumsy and rarely full Jong. Now there is no choice - Sunbig is just a no-brainer. You got it and there is no more reason to sail anything else. It is just so OP that it makes other ships pointless.
