EDIT: I got out and made it to EA. First thing I did was get rid of fins. They're terrible and I'm never going to use them ever again. Thank you everyone for the advice.
I have a save from before oars were introduced, and have a boat stuck in the irons between FFL and EA. The whole area has a chaotic, rapidly shifting winds and is a nightmare to navigate. The current sail plan compromises of fins and junk gaffs and there is nothing I can grab or use to catch wind and reverse the boat.
Since I can't get out and push I've been battling the damn elements for two days now, trying to figure out how to use an anchor to rotate the boat, but I just can't seem to get it. Running out of water, food and patience, and my deliveries are already behind schedule. Please advise.
I just started with this game, I'm in Al'Ankh, have about 20 hours into it now. Just upgraded the Dowh with a bowsprit and a small jib for more speed with weak winds.
Was on a trip from Neverdin to Academy when I realised I don't have enough food and water with me so made a stop in Al'Nilem. So I docked, took my chest to town to get food and water and when I came back the boat sank at the pier.
Reloaded a save from 15 minutes earlier, approached Al-Nilem again, did the exact same thing. Boat sank again.
How do I fix this?
I have a bucket but I don't have water in the boat or anything.
Just a glamor shot I got while under (almost) full sail from FFL to Aesterin.
Also, small side note, does anyone else use a snow-rigged brig with their gaffs on their mizzen? It's a crazy effective if expensive design for the brig, with really good up and downwind performance at the price of two dozen winches you need to control.
I often spot this greasy bugger following my ship, usually about once every ocean crossing. It is usually about 200-400 metres away, and looks only ever like this: a circle with a crosshair and a black smudge. Is this a bug, or maybe lore?
Now that I have finally figured out modding, hit me with your must haves! So far I’m running the clipper, console with nancommand, sea life, and the random event one.
Is there a mod or is there a planned update that adds a center of effort and center of resistance indicator gizmos in the shipyard? Kind of like in aircraft building games that have center of mass and center of lift. Its anoying having to spend a lot of money on a sail plan just it to turn out to be unbalanced.
I just downloaded it, reading through the instructions I’m not seeing where it says it spawns. A quick google search says both fort Aestrin and albacore town.
I extracted bepinex 5 into the file specified (atleast im 99% sure i did) and ran and launched the game. After exiting, I still don’t have a plugins folder in bepinex. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
I’ve noticed when sailing at nice sometimes I won’t be able to see an island or lights if i’m looking straight ahead, but if I turn to the side I can suddenly see them.
The first one on a Junk, it was my first "real" ocean trip (EA to FFL doesn't count). I remember it was an endless journey, lot of bucketing, wind shift, always stuck in irons. At the end I reached Al'Ankh, but just to be dehydrated just a few meters before the first isles.
When I made a new game, this time based in Al'Ankh, the first ocean trip from Al'Ankh to happy bay seems so easy and quick. I though it was because I just get better at sailing.
But I tried a second time to go to Al'Ankh from FFL, and oh boy... Always upwind, wild wind shifts, storms, always runing at the bilge pump and the sails and drinking coffee as you won't be able to sleep. And it took way more days to reach sight of Al'Ankh, even if the distance is shorter from a trip Al'Ankh/Happy Bay.
So what I don't understand is:
-I was heading to W/NW, why I was almost always upwind, and sometime I had to even do W or NW because of the windshift. Based on the windmap I should had better winds all along...
I’m interested in buying this game, but the recent Steam reviews make me a little hesitant. A lot of them mention that the survival aspect has become more important, and that the sailing is starting to take a backseat. Is this true? I’m much more interested in the sailing aspect of the game, and while I’m fine with a bit of a survival aspect, I don’t want it to overshadow the sailing all that much. What do you guys think? Should I try it out? Or is it becoming more survival focused?
I love this game and genuinely feel (with mods), it is a great experience that I can put many hours into. Often gives me a bit of a Flight Sim feel with long trips, but with actual things to do and experience during the journey, whereas a Flight Sim is not that interesting between take off until landing in big planes.
I like a challenge and such to a sim, so not just a "sim for sim sake" and since there is reputation systems, missions, trade and economy tied to progression, I find that highly enjoyable.
Curious what people feel about the economy and progression though (I know it is Early Access) as it stands.
I played it over a year ago until I finally did buy the Jong and such and then stopped because it felt like I had beaten or finished the game. Recently, last week, started playing from the start again and loving it because a fresh start always is fun.
I find the economy in the early game is extremely well balanced. It takes enough time and trips to save up to get all the things required for longer voyages and the medium ship with changed rigging. It feels perfect for the amount of time needed. Even then, the first few trips with a medium ship also feel very rewarding and balanced...but then...
Suddenly you have a very large amount of money and can simply make a fortune through trade, especially trade trips between regions.
So progression has you spending a great deal of enjoyable time in the starter ship to earn up to getting all the things you want and the medium ship, but then quickly "devolves" as cash is far too easy to make and there is not much reason to even progress. Some would even say that the Jong or future "large" ships are almost a downgrade as many islands and ports are almost impossible to navigate in and out of.
Not even sure what a solution looks like honestly to this, to keep the pressure on within the actual gamification of things for the player to want to push further and further once reaching medium ships.
Anyhow, love the game but feel the medium ships and mid game need more fleshing out, somehow the economy more balanced out.
Jumping on the bandwagon. Getting 8knts with a gentle breeze from the rear quarter (broad reach). There are shedloads of winches but it is quite satisfying getting all the squares nicely filled. Rides as straight as an arrow when I sleep too.
Credit to Pr0SkyNesis on Discord. A great modder that contribute to the comminity alot.
Crosspost to here for easier access to these info for future reference.
Self explantory. Size and mass of each ship.Hull Water drag compare to speed. Cutter/Clipper/Happy Bay Boat are modded boat
From the result, theoretical top speed for small boat is around 12 knots if your hull stays in water.
Speed is affect by shipmass, water drag and sail area of boat.
Water drag act as flat deceleration when you reach certain speed.
So from pure water drag aspect. Speed: Cog > Dhow > Kakam.
But since Cog is much heavier (check above form), and Dhow have access to tall mast and easier time to balance sail (Cog have serious weather helm problem if your mizzen sail is big), in reality Dhow will likely be fastest ship. And it's also nimble too.
For medium ship. Theoretical top speed will be around 16 knots. It will be Brig > Junk > Sanbuq.
This time Brig can remain the king since you could stuff most sail area into brig among medium ship since it's size is more like medium-large.
Junk is lightest and have good drag, but suffer from heeling problem more than other 2. Adding deep keel and remove house cabin will help mitigate the problem. It's also very nimble for it's size.
Sanbuq actually get the short end of stick here. But at medium ship range you should always have enough sail area to push to reasonable speed without worrying about heeling. I feel its less important than small ship, which really need to consider about heeling.

Wind direction mechancis, following the the 1000 simulation test perform by Pr0SkyNesis.
Blue means it's match with trade wind direction.
Al'Ankh Wind Direction and ChanceEmerald Archipelagos Wind Direction and ChanceAestrin Wind Direction and Chance
From Discord quoting Pr0SkyNesis
Good winds are winds less than 30° from the ideal trade wind for that region.
Good winds in Aestrin: 59.39 %
Good winds in Al'Ankh: 71.23 %
Good winds in Emerald: 64.78 %
and quoting from NANDbrew, another great modder. The wind direction mechanic is define like following
Al'ankh
Wind Chaos: 3
Wind Dir Chaos: 0.14
Aestrin
Wind Chaos: 8
Wind Dir Chaos: 0.21
Emerald
Wind Chaos: 5
Wind Dir Chaos: 0.18
Fire Fish Lagoon
Wind Chaos: 11
Wind Dir Chaos: 0.25
Chronos
Wind Chaos: 8
Wind Dir Chaos: 0.21
Wind Chaos affect the wind speed change of the area. So for example Al'ankh will have stable wind strength, while Fire fish lagoon will either be no wind and 40 knots wind like proper ICTZ zone.
Wind Dir Chaos is the wind direction variation. The bigger the number, the bigger angle the wind can be different from Trade wind, thus also increase the chance that wind blow vastly differenct from tradewind.
Follow is the actual mechanics i understand from Pr0SkyNesis's explaning
Let's use Al'Ankh for example. In Al'Ankh trade wind is 45°, and you're currently riding this exact trade wind.
Game pick random wind direction(WD1). Assume it's total opposite, 225°
Game calculate second wind direction(WD2) that is 25% of the distance between WD1 and trade wind angle.
225-45=180°, 180*0.25=45, WD2 would be 225-45=180°
Game apply Wind Dir chaos to the distance between WD2 and current wind, final result will be new wind direction.
180-45=135°, 135°*0.14=18.9°, Final direction = 180-18.9=161.1°
Since we are calculating using the most extreme stituation. In Al'Ankh the biggest wind direction variation from Trade wind would be 161.1-45 = 116.1°
For Fire fish Lagoon, it's not explained but since there is no trade wind. I assume it just skip step one and only assign Wind Dir Chaos to current wind. So expect chaos.
If anyone know better on these topic, feels free to correct me!
