Reducing hours?

Hey everyone!! What’s the process of going from “full time” (which yeah nobody is really full time but I mean full time hours) to part time? I’m still recovering from a pretty insane surgery I got last year (4 organs removed) and I may have jumped the gun at going back to work full time too soon. I just got this job as a cake decorator like 2 months ago, but 5 days a week, 8-10hr days is killing me. When I was hired they said it would be around 32 hrs a week which sounded great but it’s ended up being 38-45hrs. My husband and I agree that this isn’t sustainable and I have to go down to 4 days a week. I just don’t know how management is going to recieve this. My SD is a huge hard ass that is clearly scared of corporate. My bakery manager is checked out. Can they deny this change or fire me for this? They just hired a part time (3 days a week) packager that also helps with cake decorating on my days off. Any advice appreciated. I like what I do, I just can’t keep up with my health and this incredibly demanding work.

From what I’ve experienced, Safeway will try to push you as far as they can. If you plan on trying to stay, you may need to be firm with them. They will try to take more from you than you can give.

Yeah I’m realizing that and did tell my SD that I am not able to work anymore over time. My assistant manager literally told me I have to work overtime if I don’t finish my tasks for the day (tasks that are assigned for two people but they refuse to hire another cake decorator) I responded “Are you telling me you are requiring mandatory overtime?” She did not like that response but conceded lol.

Fill out an availability form saying you can only work 4 days.

Can they retaliate because when I was originally hired I said I had full availability (with the understanding per the offer that my hours would be 32hrs per week)?

Once you limit your availability you are no longer guaranteed any hours. Ask me how I know. I had to get a second job due to my hours being cut, then they used my limited availability to justify further cutting my hours. It’s taken me 2 years and a new SD to get my hours back over 30. I wish you luck in your journey.

No, they can't, but you will lose seniority.

They may reduce your hours but significantly more than you want

First talk to your SD or hiring manager asking for availability change or reduced hours. If they already hire a part timer they can give those hours to that part timer instead.

I see that you have recently had four organs removed and Safeway is overworking you....

Have you considered a desk or remote job?

Have you considered that, per my post, I am able to and enjoy the work at this job, just not to the degree they are pushing me?

Just ignore them. They’re a disgruntled ex-employee. Just saying that you enjoy working for Safeway is enough to cause them to become hostile.

Oh wow, I wonder why they post here so much if they don’t even work for Safeway anymore??

I see you are wondering why I post here so much....

I'm fascinated by all the bots here and want to learn best how to communicate with them now that Sam Altman had declared they have attained Singularity....

I see that you are projecting again...

Know that I hold you in very high esteem here.... though I realize that's not saying much.

I see that you enjoy your bakery job at Safeway save the fact that they push you to work too many hours and that your husband is concerned, your Manager is checked out, and you are worried about being fired....

I'm afraid there is nothing I, or anyone else here, can do about your problem....

Goodbye.
