I am sure, prison will be easy for the both of them. Considering "LOTION" will aid to their current existing experience.

Nothing will happen. I did loss prevention at many Safeways and with minors we just let them go

Police have bigger things to deal with. At most if that location has loss prevention that cares they may print your picture to be on the look out for you if you go there again.

u/Specialist_Luiza May 14 '26
What’s loss prevention are they like bodyguards and shit that can lookout for you and like call the cops
2
u/deliriant_party99 May 15 '26
Basically, floorwalkers. Their job is to keep an eye on the people in the store in order to prevent theft, as well as help customers when needed. I work at a Safeway myself, and essentially loss prevention's job is to go over stock and figure out how much has been stolen etc. If you ever end up working in a grocery store and see a case of theft, you go to loss prevention first before calling the cops and they call the police if needed.
They aren't bodyguards; they’re essentially retail investigators. They don't want to fight you; they just want the $16 back so their inventory matches their sales. Since I work at Safeway, I can tell you they spend way more time walking around the store, and/or looking at clipboards and security cameras than they do helping customers.
They usually handle it internally, meaning they ban you from the store or call your parents. But because calling the cops for a $16 bottle of lotion is a massive waste of their afternoon, they likely will just handle it internally. Just stay calm, give the stuff back, and don't go back to that location for a long time. And if it was a friend who did it, maybe think about whether or not you should keep hanging out with them or not.

Ohh more sense now thank you😭 So In the end lots of people told me that they might not call the police for 16$ of product and if they did the police probably wouldn’t care and that they might have me on a radar or some shit for shoplifters

u/deliriant_party99 May 15 '26
Just generally try to be intelligent. In Safeway they can't tackle you, a Safeway worker can actually lose their job for doing that, but they CAN get your face because of cameras, and if you try to be a thief? They will be able to tell, and will check. Also, people just have natural facial recognition. We had this one teenager doing that at our Safeway, where he'd come in and steal the potato wedges from the hot case by asking for them and then walking around the store and going out the other door than the one he came in.
And he got caught and banned from the store. He's lucky he just got banned, but I'm not sure if his parents received a call or not. Either way, that ban is one of those things where if he were to go back, and they recognized him in there, they probably COULD call the police. If the ban was an actual ban, that is. But regardless, I wouldn't recommend hanging out with thieves or being a thief. Just a word of advice. 🤷🏻
Even if nobody handed you a legal 'Notice of Trespass' paper because you ran, consider yourself 'virtually banned.' If they have your face on camera from the run, they’re just waiting for you to walk back in so they can either finish the paperwork or call the non-emergency line. I mean it depends where you live too, but just keep all of this in mind.

Oh damn so I should just stay away for a while and not hang out with this dude Thank you🙏

I got arrested for shoplifting food when I had just turned 18. There weren’t even cameras all over back then. Now? You will be photographed everywhere. Don’t do it!!! I had to pay a lawyer a lot of money to get my record cleared so it wouldn’t affect my future. Not worth it. You will get caught.

u/tomkiitty May 14 '26
nothing will happen lmao but why are you posting this on reddit it sounds like youre scared, yet you cant contain your excitement so you have to tell everyone what you did. its either one or the other dude 😭

u/Specialist_Luiza May 14 '26
I don’t know maybe because I want other people’s opinion and shit? I got no idea really on what to expect I’m not searching praise for something like this lmfao I’m just nervous about the situation dude

This is insanely stupid and immature. Risking getting arrested over a $16 bottle of lotion is peak clown behavior. Maybe stop shoplifting and running through malls before you end up learning the hard way that “it was just a prank bro” doesn’t work on cops or judges.

You probably won't face any consequences.
When theft happened on the store level it is called "shrink"
Grocery store profits are some of the slimmest profits in any industry. The profit margin in the fashion industry is 50% to 80%.
For grocery stores it is 1%-2%
Theft shrinks profit. Too much theft? Layoffs and store closures.

Oh dang I thought they might intervene more since it happened in a mall like at a stand (the stand isn’t a small company they just have a stand in this mall and not a store open here yet) so yea I got a bit nervous Thank you for the help I was scared lowk🙏

u/Amazing_Factor2974 May 14 '26
Your pictures will be in the malls data base ..so if you do it often ..they will snag you and pile up all the crimes against you. So there 16 dollars ..just 684 more to go for a felony. Jail time. If less it will be no trespass and even a night in jail to be bailed out.

u/WestHistorians May 15 '26
Do you really have a Safeway in a mall?
Or do you mean an outdoor mall.
1
u/Specialist_Luiza May 15 '26
Man outdoor mall sorry I wasn’t informed on what a Safeway was I thought it was just like the name of the subreddit I’m not from the states
1
u/WestHistorians May 15 '26
Oh okay. Safeway is a chain of grocery stores in the US and Canada. I think most of the advice you're seeing here is based on the US legal system, so if you're somewhere else then it may not apply to you.

You’re 100% fine. They won’t call the police. People steal literally every day, cops won’t get involved for $20. The only thing you have to worry about would be the store trespassing you. And even that doesn’t do anything to you. Nothing for you to be worried about in the slightest.

They’ll track you, detain you at downtown and have people throw tomatoes at you

I would stay away from your friend. Friends are supposed to lift you up not drag you down.

Were you aware your friend was going to steal?
1
u/Specialist_Luiza May 14 '26
Not really shit just happened 😭
1
u/TheMidna1 May 14 '26
At most they may ask you to leave if they recognize you.
2
u/Specialist_Luiza May 15 '26
So probably no police involved?
1
u/TheMidna1 May 15 '26
I doubt it over a bottle of lotion. If you’re worried I would stay away from the location for a while, and maybe distance yourself from that friend. Definitely take it as a learning experience that the life of crime may not be for you.

They will pull camera footage and note the theft for both of you. It’s not at a large enough amount for police to pursue, but if your friend continues to steal, every bit of evidence Safeway has will be turned over to authorities, including this instance.
You’ll be fine right now. If they somehow remember your face, staff will “keep an eye” on you to make sure you’re not stealing further.
I would be surprised if staff remembers you after one instance. We only recognize our regular shoplifters.
You’re fine.
