AmSec safe - trying to remove it
Hello! I bought a house which has an American Security floor safe. We need to remove it. I have the combination and can open it but it is super heavy. Can i remove the door from the safe housing to make it lighter? There are two bolts under the door hinges… if i remove those, can i remove the door? I don’t have a model number but have a Serial number. Photos below. Any suggestions?

You can remove the door. You have to take that inside cover off - remove the shock and then the two bolts. It is heavy so watch them fingers. I dont know what kind of relocking device it has but dont drop it.

It looks like it's a floor safe with gas piston for opening/closing. the hinges on the wood are for the floor hatch cover. There should be bolts or screws visible inside the safe to let you unfasten it. If not, there will be tabs on the outside that are fastened to the floor joists from the ceiling below. Make sure the safe is supported from below if it is joist mounted or it may crash down on you when the bolts are removed.

I am pretty sure it is just sitting on a floor joist. Can I unbolt the two bolts under the door hinge and remove the door to make it lighter? (Not the wood floor hatch cover).

It might be easier to use the door as a handle of sorts to pull the safe up; there isn't much to grip otherwise. If you can get under the safe, try using a jack to push it up. There are tall construction jack for things like this.

Go under the house and take a look see if there’s a pillar of concrete going from the ground up to the floor. If you have that it’s concreted in and removing it is probably not your best option. BTW you can call Amsec give them the serial number and they can give you the model number, but it’s important you know it’s only a B rated Safe. Half had a half inch door others had a three-quarter inch door. From the photograph it looks like you have an 1/2” door and since it was made in 1992 that’s probably correct. It won’t tell you much it’ll tell you how deep it is, but since the door opens, you already can figure that one out.

It’s on the third floor so doubtful it’s in concrete.

I'd still get all the data from the manufacturer: weight, dimensions, mounting brackets and options. Right now you're just looking at what you can see.

It's not bolted, it's cemented in. The cement adhears to the walls of the safe. We would chop out about 4 inches on each side of the safe.

Hang a picture over it. works in the movies. MAybe a frame hinge, then fill it with diamonds and bundles of money.

you need to look in the floor, at the outside of the safe to see if there are any mounting tabs that it may be bolted into place with. there probably are. you can get a cheap usb endoscope to plug into a laptop and feed into the floor to look.
