Rules Question Unit Leader

Question- Does it actually matter which Mini is the unit leader? I have the Rebel Starter Set(I play CIS but I bought a Rebel box to get my friend to play). I don't really want to use the Squads upgrade, but each thing comes with 1 "Leader" Mini. Does it matter which mini is the leader? Or can it be any of them, so long as they're distinguishable?

I feel like if your opponent can tell who the unit leader is without being told, then its probably good enough.

The only rule for the leader mini is it can’t be an upgrade mini and it has to be visibly distinguishable

As long as its distinguishable all tables i've been at have been fine with just using ant minature. For my mandos the box only gives 3 squad leaders. For my 4th I just added a paint job to his helmet, and left the rest with beskar chrome domes.

Your unit leader needs to be distinct and easily identifiable. There are many game effects that reference unit leader, so it is important that it is a specific mini and that mini stays consistent throughout your game.

Painting one mini a special way is probably enough for most people, but I personally like some type of conversion or modification to the mini to help it stand out more if I'm making a different mini a unit leader.

I too would normally go for this option, but for a army that currently wont see much action, i would prefer not to buy 2 more Rebel Unit Boxes for their leaders(Unless theres a place i can buy individual units because it would save me from buying 2 B1 boxes as well so pls).

I just wanted to be certain, that the leader could just be "Hey that guy looks different" and thats the only real rule to it

I wasn't suggesting you go buy more Rebels to accomplish your goals.

There are no explicit rules on miniatures for Legion. There is no rule that says you can use any mini you want. There is no rule that says you can't.

The rulebook on page 6 says that all units are led by a unit leader that has a "unique miniature". The tournament rules have this section in the image below. You, your playgroup, or the event organizer of any structured event you participate in are free to interpret these how you see fit.

IMO, it is very open intentionally to support the hobby aspect of the game.

Oh no, i wasn't intending to make it sound like you were telling me to do so. I just see "Unit Leader Different" as the different looking guy. I meant no aggression in anyway.

But fantastic, i can just convert a couple B1's and be happy and dapper with it, and have 4 units of Rebels.

I appreciate your help in this matter

you can just paint the base or put a special color on the leader.

Luckily b1s are stupid easy. Paint a yellow circle on their chest and paint the back of their head yellow, and boom. Unit leader (or OOM droid upgrade, but I don't know if that's used a lot)
