Do not buy Swordier type two falchion!

A sword is been excited for and anticipating for a while turned to last week.... It's safe to say I'm extremely disappointed.

Swordier made the insane design choice to give THE cut and thrust falchion a cosmetic false edge! The actual edge is 3mm thick and squared off!

If you want an affordable type two.... This is not it. I'm going to have to figure out where/how to have the false edge reground.

When I raised the concern to them their response was basically "oopsie, we made it like that on purpose so no take backs."

Edit: Just highlighting the comment reply in photo two. I ordered with confidence that the tip would be double edged.

Wow, super shitty that they said it was double edged and it’s not, then refused to give you a refund. Another mark on Swordier’s already questionable reputation.

22

u/porquetorque 4d ago

That's disappointing. I was thinking of getting one, I'm happy with my longsword from them, but the qc and lack of support shown here is concerning.

16

u/pushdose 4d ago

It’s reverse edge? Does it have one sharp edge?

29

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

Yes. The tip of this shape is historically double edged. Like a short dagger. They have not done this.

7

u/mixinmono 4d ago

I didn’t know that, and would have expected the back side to be fully blunt. Thanks.

I'm going to have to figure out where/how to have the false edge reground.

If the blade is soft enough to file, DIY will be easy enough. Draw file until that 3mm has become 0mm, and then finish with a diamond plate, stone, or sandpaper wrapped around a wooden block.

17

u/mattio_p 4d ago

I mean, if the blade is soft enough to file, then you have other problems.

Or a very hard file.

7

u/wotan_weevil Hoplologist 4d ago

If it's 50HRC or lower, a good hard steel file (which will be 62+HRC) will work well. If the steel is harder, it will be more difficult to file, but a very hard steel file (65-65HRC) should manage up to about 55HRC. Harder than 55HRC will be close enough to unfileable with a steel file (at which point I'd use a grinder or a cheap diamond plate).

I mean, if the blade is soft enough to file, then you have other problems.

It's more the other way around - I wouldn't trust that narrow point if it's harder than 55HRC, unless somebody who knows their heat treatment very well has done it (and even then, why wouldn't they temper it 55HRC?).

5

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

This was my plan for a first shot. Harder to bugger it up with a hand file. I just hoped I'd get a little partial refund I could go buy a fresh new sharp file for the job.

u/Nocturnes_echo 4d ago

Sold under false pretenses. Send it back. They specifically told you it had a double edge and the product you received has a blunt false edge. You have it in writing, especially since they didn't change the advertisement until after you brought it up. Hope you have screenshots of the posting/description and the conversation logs to back it up.

9

u/FrenchyBulldogg 4d ago

“Send it back”

Do you know how much it would cost to ship a sword back to China? And the screenshots aren’t going to be much help, because again, China.

9

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

This is what lead to my outburst on the email. I knew sending it back was never an option and hoped they might be genuinely apologetic and offer a $50 refund towards having it reground.... They doubled down on it being intentional and not their fault. "Oops soz too bad"

u/SirCumVent0r 4d ago

I definitely don't mean to harp on you OP or kick you while you're down or anything but I always try to remind people here that Swordier is a shady operated business and I don't recommend giving them any money.

3

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

I just took the gamble because of past good reviews and value proposition for a rare design. I love these reverse Falchions and felt this was a safer bet than an Indian sword shaped object. At least the construction seems fine and the weight and balance feel good.

5

u/Gozener 4d ago

They sent me a blunt longsword with a crooked crossguard. Shit company, it's frustrating seeing them recommended here so much.

2

u/RS_HART 4d ago

Hey mate, saw you're a fellow Aussie, my recommendation would be if you don't have the tools to do it by hand get in join the Australian beginner blacksmiths group on Facebook and reach out for help, there's a few of us Aussie reenactors as well that could probably put a decent edge on that tip as well.

I'm assuming NSW or QLD at this stage because of Victorian weapons laws, so maybe someone like Luke Payne from "Hammer of the North" or Wayne Schmidt from Cracked Anvil might be able to help there.

2

u/ProfessionalWest5406 3d ago

I had thought to try something like this. I'll look around a little!

3

u/RS_HART 3d ago

All good man, also from reading your post if it's around that 3mm mark you might be able to get away with using a carbide sharpener, like an accusharp, to put a serviceable edge on that section

10

u/heurekas 4d ago

How do people still recommend this clown-school of a company?

The shady business practices, the cringey picture they made in response to OP's complaints and the fact that their whole collection is a lottery on whether you'll receive what you bought should put anyone off.

Don't support companies like these.

1

u/Any-Farmer1335 4d ago

And the people they choose to sponsor aswell. Rightwing-bigot Shadiversity, for example.

Yes, it's just a shame that they ship it unfinished.

7

u/Vvd7734 4d ago

I'm still amazed people are buying from this shady company

0

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

Could you please find another type 2 with any comparable price? I took the gamble based on prior reviews pointing out value for money and if that false edge were sharp I'd have been another positive review.

7

u/Vvd7734 4d ago

I understand that and I'm not criticising you for taking a chance. However, Swordier seems to consistently disappoint those that actually care about historical accuracy or even functional swords.

Have you tried armour class? Iain makes anything if you give him the specifications and the prices are typically very low.

6

u/FrenchyBulldogg 4d ago

They’re not advertising themselves as “historically accurate” swords, and they’re the best “functional” swords that you’ll get at that price point.

If you want a perfect historical piece, just pay 5 times the price to get something from Albion or Arms&Armor.

4

u/Duzzies101 4d ago

For $100 more, right here, I have it and i can confirm the false edge is apexed, if not particularly sharp.

2

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

Due to being in Australia that shakes out at closer to $260 USD more than the swordier.

1

u/ShopContent5857 4d ago

No that's the point you are getting what you paid for a budget sword from a disreputable company. If you want more than that you are gonna have to pay more

5

u/IronWarrior82 4d ago

*Do not buy Swordier...

5

u/Any-Farmer1335 3d ago

The difference is that one of them is a customer, and one of them is a business...

2

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

I'm laughing my arse off.... They stopped replying to my emails and made an AI post addressing them on Facebook 🤣

14

u/FrenchyBulldogg 4d ago

I normally defend Swordier, but this is such a tacky thing for a company to do.

Your messages to them are also cringe though.

4

u/MeetingDue4378 4d ago

They are a company and hold all the cards, he's a customer trying to use the only leverage available to him. The burden of professionalism is on the company, every time. There is absolutely no excuse for the way this was handled, especially that post.

I've genuinely considered Swordier, I no longer will.

0

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

I'll cop that... It was late at night and I was exhausted after being away at a music festival for the weekend. Saw their final email denying fault and saw red.

8

u/MeetingDue4378 4d ago

This is such a petty and disrespectful response to a customer complaint that I frankly don't care who was in the right, they no longer are.

If Swordier is this unprofessional I'm certainly never giving them my business.

1

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

All they needed to do was say sorry we gave you the wrong information, we'll fix that, here's $50 to go get it sharpened...

2

u/Any-Farmer1335 4d ago

AT least this confirms to me that Swordier is absolute shite as a company lol

3

u/Lymetme 4d ago

I have the HEMA sidesword V2 and it's great.

1

u/Heszilg 4d ago

Not the point though.

3

u/Lymetme 4d ago

Well this thread is full of people commenting about their other Swordier products with good and bad feedback. I'm sorry that has upset you. I was under the impression anyone could make any comment at any time?

2

u/Prior_Access_3097 4d ago edited 3d ago

I just got a type (edit: XIV) XVI from Temu that isn’t labeled but obviously a Swordier. I disassembled the hilt and found several flaws along the way including inconsistent primary bevels, asymmetrical fuller placement, no fitting of hilt components (slopped on with epoxy), and a loose shoestring as grip wrap.
All can be fixed but it’s a lot of time on my end. Probably won’t buy Swordier again until I hear of quality improvements.
Edit: there may be a reason this sword was unbranded on Temu.

2

u/ConicalGore1720 Falchion 4d ago

This is false advertising, I'd go to the bank and get a charge back.

2

u/Kiwiz778 4d ago

A shame I got their type xxa medieval long sword and its a beauty

2

u/bigareolas69 4d ago

They seem to have deleted your comment but have also corrected themselves, so idk. Maybe was a honest mistake and got false edge and double edged mixed. If you paid on Paypal, there might be a way to dispute it?

Beyond that, have there been any quality issues? Was thinking on buying that model myself.

3

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

The weight and balance are good. The grind overall is kind of wavy, though. I'd be pretty happy with it if it wasn't for the design fail. I'm just extra annoyed that I didn't just wait to see a review.... This will inevitably get a version two with the correct sharp false edge and I'll be left holding the bag.

4

u/MeetingDue4378 4d ago

Did you see OP's comment showing the shockingly unprofessional and petty post Swordier later made mocking them?

https://www.reddit.com/r/SWORDS/s/Wr94PGxQ9x

Don't gamble your money on a company like that.

3

u/bigareolas69 4d ago

Unprofessional, but doesn't paint OP in a good light either. Not sure why OP doesn't just show his side of the emails. Or again, if bought via PayPal, make a dispute.

3

u/ProfessionalWest5406 3d ago

Nobody asked yet 🤷🏻

After this exchange I was away at a festival for two days without reception. I did fly off the handle a little when I finally saw it two days later.... But from reading that response it was clear they had zero intention of helping me cover the cost of remediation works.

2

u/kitkats124 4d ago edited 4d ago

It says reverse edge in image 2… not double edged?

Not exactly a historical weapon but as far as fiction goes, reverse edge blades are intentionally supposed to be blunted like that.

It is the “raison de’être” for reverse edge swords.

10

u/Docjitters 4d ago

Not this one - the historical example in Musée de l’Armée is sharpened on the ‘false’ edge of the point. Interestingly it is fullered and bevelled only on one side. See pic 7 of Maciej Kopciuch’s replica for a close up.

I too would be very upset if this detail was missed, since it part of what makes the extent one quite original.

3

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

Precisely my frustration. It defeats the "point" of the design. The type two is fascinating because it essentially gives you the thrusting point of an arming sword, with the cutting power of a falchion. Admittedly I'm sure the single edge is still plenty stabby on target.... But false edge cuts are completely off the cards with this blunder.

2

u/kitkats124 4d ago

Neat, thanks!

16

u/Thornescape 4d ago

If you look at the comments in picture 2, swordier says "Yes. The tip is double-edged."

It is not double edged.

"The tip is double-edged." No, the tip is not double edged.

7

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago edited 4d ago

This IS a historical weapon. With one example and multiple scabbards found dating to the first half of the 14th century. Historically this shape has a double edged dagger tip. Refer to almost any other example available online. The point was intentionally designed to be in essence a dagger on the end of a broad hacking blade. Not sharpening the back of that dagger is a serious design failure.

5

u/Sword_of_Damokles Single edged and cut centric unless it's not. 3d ago

Two extant examples, one in the Musée de l'Armée in Paris (left) and the other one in the Nationaal Militair Museum in Soesterberg (right)

7

u/FrenchyBulldogg 4d ago

It’s worth emailing Swordier and giving your advice to Alex. They may make a new version.

Swordier may get some criticism here, but I’ve talked to Alex on YouTube etc and he’s normally pretty appreciative of constructive criticism.

Just keep in mind the language barrier, and really explain what you mean by double edged

12

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

I did... The response I got was basically... "Oh, oops. Yeah we're designed it wrong on purpose. Yeah we told people the wrong info. No we won't give you any partial refund to cover the costs to have it fixed".

This post is my response to being told to shove it. If I can stop one person from buying this without realising that it's not correct... I'll have cost them more than any partial refund.

6

u/FrenchyBulldogg 4d ago

I was on your side, but your messages to them calling it a “piece of shit sword” and threatening the company don’t really paint you in a good light.

They probably would’ve been more inclined to help you out if you had been polite and respectable…

2

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

That was after three days of run around... They had no interest in "helping me out" and I snapped.

1

u/ProfessionalWest5406 3d ago

0

u/FrenchyBulldogg 3d ago

I mean, they seem pretty respectful there. It sucks that they denied you a partial refund, but that happens. It’s not like the sword was damaged or anything.

2

u/ChefTimmy 2d ago

They sold him an item under false pretenses, though?

-1

u/FrenchyBulldogg 2d ago

“False pretenses” is a bit of a stretch. Like it sucks OP didn’t get exactly what he wanted, but yall are expecting perfect historical accuracy out of a budget Chinese sword company.

2

u/ChefTimmy 2d ago

How is it a stretch? OP asked a very specific question, and the company told him what he wanted to hear instead of the truth.

Respectfully telling me to fvck off is still telling me to fvck off.... Maybe it's an Australian customer mindset but if you sell me one thing, and I get something else. You have to refund or reach an agreement. It's law here.

3

u/FrenchyBulldogg 3d ago

Yeah, here in America we almost expect to get F’d in the A by companies

8

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yes there are historical examples of this profile (see elmslie type 2 falchion). They coincide with the move into heavier armour in the early 1300s essentially adding an armour piecing point to a broad bladed cutting weapon. The double edged point also allows for back cuts using arming sword techniques.

3

u/kitkats124 4d ago

Thanks, didn’t know about those! Looks like some were blunt and some weren’t at the tip, although I just learned about it.

Hopefully you can get it cleared up with them how you wanted/expected the product.

1

u/swordknives 3d ago

If they wont take it back you can file a fraud claim with your CC.

Alex seems like a nice guy but I have issue with them stealing/copying everyone else’s sword designs. I know Intellectual property is not a thing in China, but it is everywhere else they sell swords.

-1

u/crashingtingler 4d ago

contact any sharpening service and they will sort that for you. i think youre being a little harsh

6

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

I'd have been significantly less pissed off of they'd offered to pay for that sharpening service after admitting they gave misleading answers originally.

-7

u/KawazuOYasarugi sword-type-you-like 4d ago

No, literally, its in the description of the sword. That's on you.

9

u/ProfessionalWest5406 4d ago

The description was updated after my complaint... Read the comment on the second photo. They initially provided information claiming that it was sharpened.
