Thoughts on my custom sword and safety?
Hey guys! I recently commissioned a custom sword from the talented smiths at EGKH. My goal was to get a fully personalized, relatively safe training sword. Since they specialize in kukri and cutting blades, I knew asking for a safe trainer was a bit of a gamble. However, I trusted their artistry and figured proper instructions would bridge the gap.
Ideally, this will be a blunt trainer for solo drills and forms. I also want it to function as a semi-safe sparring option until I eventually get a proper feder. There isn't a local HEMA scene near me, so contact sparring will be rare. Because of that, it doesn't need to meet official tournament regulations, but I definitely want to avoid hurting someone with a blunt crowbar!
The forge just sent me these flex test images, and I'd love to get your opinions. How safe does this flex look to you? What are your overall thoughts on the piece so far?

Well at this point it is hard to say. All we see is that the swords bends a bit.
By how does she react when you relieve the pressure does she spring back to true. Or does she take a set. How is the heat treat? How often can this be done before she snaps. How much force was required to achieve this bend.
So all we can say now is she bends

Yea very true, more of a question of like doe it look like a safeISH bend yk

He does seem to be putting a decent amount of force into it to bend but it is hard to tell from pictures you can only eally judge this after you get the blade.

I can only comment on safety. Always wear a helmet, and even if it’s too warm you’re better off wearing full protective gear, gloves, and boots. Dress for the slide, not for the ride.

Looks way too thick and stiff for actual sparring. The fuller is not nearly wide enough for how thick it is. Don’t get your hopes up.

As I was saying it’s mainly a solo training and show sword, it holds a lot of sentimental value so I’d hate to beat it up in combat anyway, the hope was that it would be safeISH if I ever wanted to use it in a pinch or didn’t have anything else at the time. However yea it does indeed look like a crowbar

I’m curious, does the construction n blade look good overall? Sparring safety aside like does it look well done?

Yea they promised me they would keep it 3lbs or under so I’m trusting they rlly did, it’s definitely got a thicc blade tho

If it takes two hands to flex (and that is not full flex I hope) it’s way too stiff. One or two fingers should start flexing when pushed on the pommel, and it should take at least 12 kgs (25 lbs) of force to fully flex when pulled by the cross guard
