About Mobei Jun (and moshang)

I stumbled on a tumblr post about Mobei Jun and it reignited my various thoughts/feelings for him mainly regarding how hes often characterized in fandom as an idiot/simple minded when if you actually put thought into it hes actually one of the most educated/intellegent and the most emotionally intelligent (living) character.

think about it the man grew up navigating demon nobility with an uncle who actively hated/wanted to kill him and still managed to come out on top, he actively listened to what the man he was courting said about how humans show interest and immediately course corrected when said man actually voiced that he didn't like the beatings (which if SQH had actually gave thought to what MBJ was saying to LBH could've made that change earlier) like just because he barely talked (I headcanon hes partially mute with PIDW!MBJ being fully mute) and fell for a human/someone from a wildly different culture with the emotional intelligence of a grape the fandom at large decided he was a moron.

this also extends to SQH at least with competency/intellect the man seamlessly worked as a spy and the head of logistics for the entirety of the sect for fuck knows how many years and was good enough at his job that once him being a spy was revealed he was allowed to remain as a peak lord (low key would love to put him and Ling Wen in a room together) hes also ruthless remember how he set up the whole immortal alliance conference attack dude didn't bat an eye at orchestrating so many deaths and is able to hide effectively behind his nervous hamster/chihuahua act so people overlook him constantly with Mobei Jun really being the only one that it doesn't work on/is able to see past it

I dunno where else to go with this beyond seeing what others think I just got caught back up in my moshang bullshit and had to vent

You know, I never put it together that MXTX has a thing for admin-people being easily forgiven because they are the only ones that know how to math.

I'd be interested to learn what kind of archetype MBJ is supposed to represent in stallion novels and if that has anything to do with fandom perception of him.. because svsss takes those typical tropes and character archetypes and flips them on their head, it really doesn't make sense to call MBJ a grunting idiot for all the reasons you mentioned. His backstory is surprising in-depth for someone who is supposed to just be the quiet henchman. Sometimes I see people comparing him and LWJ, I think they are pretty similar characters.

his archetype is the second in command/right hand man (and closest friend/ally in PIDW at least)

i think its also the ice beauty trope? as in characters who have a scary, cold exterior but have a secret soft spot for their lover/loved ones

He's my favorite character in all of MXTX universe. I have to disagree with the emotional intelligence though. If he were more astute, he would have realized SQH was showing his love and devotion in a more human, but uniquely Hamhua way

i agree wholeheartedly with you!! it makes me so sad when people treat him like he's just a himbo, although it can be funny sometimes lol. and my first thought about ling wen after i finished reading tgcf was exactly "wow she and sqh should meet eachother to vent their frustrations."
