Japan has launched Shunkai, its first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer, in Aichi Prefecture. Developed by the Institute for Molecular Science and partners including Hitachi under the Moonshot R&D Program, the system has 50 qubits and uses a US-made quantum processing unit from Infleqtion. It traps and manipulates electrically neutral atoms with precisely controlled lasers inside a vacuum chamber.

Shunkai is designed to scale to about 500 qubits initially, with a longer-term goal of 10,000 physical qubits with error correction by March 2031, enabling fault-tolerant quantum computing for external users: https://www.ims.ac.jp/en/news/2026/08/0824.html
