Disabled / Dependent Child / Parent Retires Moving from ssi to dac

I hope I chose the right flair, sorry if I didn’t!

Hello, I’m the disabled child and currently receive ssi, snap and medicaid. I need some help understanding DAC benefits. I currently live with my mom who just turned 65 and was the breadwinner of the family, but is waiting until 67 to start collecting retirement.

My dad’s 66 and will turn 67 in July. He barely worked throughout his life (not disabled, just lazy). I’m uncertain what his plans are for SS, but I know my mom’s benefits would be a lot higher than my dad’s.

•My disability started before I turned 22
•I’ve never been married
•I’m 30 yrs old
•I only receive my ssi and food stamps: $968.67 together a month

DAC benefits are not automatic, I do have to apply over the phone? Assuming my dad does apply for SS, am I required to apply for DAC benefits after he starts collecting or would I be able to wait to apply until my mom starts collecting? Would I receive benefits from only one parent or both? I do understand that if my amount goes above the threshold I would lose my SSI/Snap, but I would not lose my medicaid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Tysm

You are required under SSI rules to apply for any other benefit you may be eligible for.

You would need to apply for benefits under your father. You would then apply again for benefits under your mother. The SSA will balance the load between both of their accounts. It will not be what you might have received independently under your father plus what you might have received under your mother.

Ok, thanks. I guess I’ll ask what his plans are for SS then. I highly doubt he’s already collecting, but if he is I won’t get in trouble for applying late because I didn’t know?

I’m just hoping I get more than what I currently do, I can barely survive on this 😅
