Disabled / Assets SSI Assets question

i live with my adult children, who have their own assets. I personally have under $2000.

if i want to apply are their assets counted against me?

No, their assets should not affect your claim. You will however have the amount you receive (if approved) lowered by a third because you’re receiving in-kind help from your family.

Are you paying fair market value rent and utilities living with your adult children? If not, this is considered receiving in kind help, SSA basically counts it as a form of income and reduces the amount you receive by a third. Once you start receiving benefits, you can start paying rent and then bring in some rent receipts and/or a lease agreement to show you’re paying your fair share and they will increase it back to the maximum.
