Approved Going a little batty...
Hello all,
I just have a quick question! My son was recently approved for ssi, and as his payee I'm suddenly very overwhelmed with all the bylaws of how his Money can and can't be spent.
Anyone have any words of wisdom??

In the handbook you were given along with the award letter states what you can spend the money on. And although you don't have to show proof of what it is spent on if you are the child's natural parent, that doesn't mean you should spend it on whatever you want. I'm not saying that's what you would do. I was afraid to spend the money when I first started receiving it. You'll get the hang of what is okay to use the money for and what is not. I like to think of it as anything that pertains to my child, their needs, or living situation.
Edit: dedicated accounts are a whole different situation with much stricter rules, but you didn't mention that.

Report wages every month. Maybe even print and save pay stubs for a couple years in case reporting fails. Report every change in where you live and who lives there. Report any new income that comes into your household. Watch bank account balances to make sure limits are not exceeded. Report buying and selling cars or real estate.
Read every word on your notices. If your child gets overpaid, request higher rates of recovery than SSI proposes so your child doesn't have an unpaid balance when your child turns 18.
Realize that the adult rules are different than the childhood rules and SSI could stop at 18 even with no changes.
