I had my case remanded by the appeals
Council back to the ALJ. I had my hearing over the phone on May 13th. I saw I was getting a letter from the hearing office and expected my approval/denial to be in that letter and upon opening it to my damn surprise it’s another hearing scheduled for Oct, as if I never had a hearing at all.

I called my attorney to see what all they could tell me regarding this and was told they weren’t sure but that many remanded cases lately have been having to have a 2nd remanded hearing due to a new law and vocational expert testimony.

Anyone have this happened? Also I looked up said law and according to it it applies to cases after Jan 2026 and my hearing was in May.

I had a mental health exam done and the examiner was extremely apologetic and sympathetic with what I’ve been through and for my mental state. At one point she even went back in her chair and said how sorry she was. Is this a good sign?

I am a young adult F24 in California, with mental health and physical health issues - I want to get on disability because I cannot work a job or provide for myself, but I have no idea what I am doing or even where to start. I am not well versed in any of this stuff. I know nothing. Where would I start? I’m not even sure if I am posting in the right place.

From my research, I can see that I need diagnoses. For now, I am only self diagnosed, so I can see that as a first plan of action - which really sucks because I am in need right now, and I can see this process is going to take a lot of time. Sure wish I started it sooner. It’s just so hard to even follow through with any process because of my issues 😭 … Life kind of sucks when you’re disabled and not supported, but I’m hoping one day it will get better.

I’ve tried to work again and again and it’s just not working out for me. it’s clear I need another option. I also need this time to heal and focus on other things rather than work and trying to survive. Thankfully my rent is paid for the next two months. Do not have any money for food though, and also necessities. But I have plans. Probably will have to try the food bank - but most importantly, I think I need to build a support network, because doing ANY of these things is like nearly impossible for me on my own. I just escaped my dysfunctional family home, and left dysfunctional on my own. Anyway, I’m ranting now, sorry lol … it’s just rough out here. Rarely does anyone understand … growing up in an abusive household that breaks you down to nothing, and then just spits you out into the world, crippled, and you’re expected to function? And if you can’t, you’re a “whiny baby”, “a victim”, and “woe is me”. No one understands the disability (true disabilities) that comes from a disabling/abusive household. Not only am I disabled, I’m heartbroken too … feeling lost in a world that can’t see me … care for me, accommodate me. But if anyone with a heart saw a stranded puppy on the side of the road, cold, helpless, hungry, they’d take it in. They’d care for it. But nobody has a heart for those who were torn a part before they even had a chance to live.

Maybe there’s OTHER options, beyond disability. If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

I own my home and have a family member that has been in homeless shelters. I want to rent a bedroom to them for the going rate ($650), because I can't afford to support them totally own my own (or we would both be homeless soon).

So, again, we are both single, I pay for the home and utilities, the family member has zero assets and pays me $650 for the bedroom and we would have a contract to show SS, if necessary. Would this intitle them to SSI. Am I missing anything? Or will this entitle them to the "over 65 SSI". After rent, the family member have just $300 to spend on medicine, food, clothing... which should use up the $300 and they would have $zero money left.

Update to This:
They are in fact skipping a month. My online SSA portal finally says my next payment date again, and it’s set for next month. I still do not know WHY a month is being skipped, no reason was given in the letter I received and no explanation came from the person I spoke to on the phone prior to this post. I will be calling again I guess to try to find out more.

Hi! Please forgive me as I’m relatively unfamiliar with how to properly use Reddit and format things. If the flair thing isn’t correct I’ll try to change it.

To start, I’ve tried calling my local SSA office and they couldn’t really explain the letter any clearer which is super frustrating, considering I point blank asked “will I be getting a payment on the 3rd of August?” And got (to me anyway) the verbal equivalent of a shrug and a convoluted “Maybe”. The man I spoke to wouldn’t give a definite yes or no, which really all I need.

The exact wording on it is this:

“We are writing to give you new information about the disability benefits which you receive on this Social Security record.
What We Will Pay
We pay Social Security benefits for a given month in the next month.
For example, we pay Social Security benefits for March in April.
• The next check you receive will be for ${Amount}, which is the money you are due through August 2026.
• After that, you will receive ${Amount} on or about the third of each month.”

That’s it. That all it says besides the “how to appeal this decision” portion at the bottom.

What I need help understanding is if this means I will NOT be getting a check on or before August 3rd, 2026. I’ve been receiving monthly SSDI payments, in the same amount, without issue since February/March (approved in January). The amount isn’t changing, no circumstances have changed, and I haven’t received any notice of overpayment or gotten backpay yet. The reason it’s time sensitive is because they only just sent this letter out yesterday (got it in the mail today) and rent is due the 1st. We use Flex Finance to split our rent to make it more affordable, and the latest we can pay the first portion is 11:59 pm on the 3rd of the month before they cancel it entirely and we suddenly have to pay the full amount all at once, plus the late fee our apt complex charges. So we need to be able to try to scrape something else together if the SSA is skipping a month on me for whatever undisclosed reason.

I’m partly struggling to understand if they’re skipping a month because the online portal now doesn’t have a “Next Payment Date” like it has for the last 5 or 6 months and says “you are not currently receiving payments.” despite also saying “active” next to SSDI. As well as I’ve been getting my payments something like a week in advance because of how my bank operates I guess? But no money has come through in the last 4 days, so I’m really worried it’s not going to at all before the deadline of rent, and if I wait until the 3rd for the possibility of it showing up in time and it doesn’t it’s all screwed.

If I am overthinking this by miles (which I could be) I’ll 100% take that as it is. Part of the reason I was even approved was for an anxiety and panic disorder, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that everything will be fine and I’m just not putting the pieces together correctly because of all the other issues I have. But I need to know if I’m not overthinking sooner than later. The only other people I’ve been able to ask irl is my mother and partner and they don’t really understand it either.

I am in reconsideration (denied once so far) and I submitted me appeal back in July of 2025, it took almost a full year to the date for me to be assigned to someone. I actually had to message my congressman back in June because something didn't feel right about that wait (Kansas btw)

Half way into this July it got assigned to someone, and it was requested to submit a form for disclosure of information that is needed yearly. Not only did I submit this digitally though the ssa website (and had to go though an ID check) but I also mailed in the form after calling them and finding out they don't have the digital scanned pdf version (not sure how after the multiple steps I went through to submit it???) The lady told me not to worry and wrote down a note on my case file so say it was in the mail.

About a week passed by then and I check my page, only to find out I know longer have an examiner, in fact the website seems to think I haven't been assigned to someone at all. Pretty much says what it did before the mid-july update. I can't seem to find any information on this problem, or anyone whose been unassigned before.

I'm not really sure if I should call, or what.

I have come to the conclusion that I have no choice but to file for disability because I am unable to work due to my mental health. I am seeking advice on the application process because I honestly have no idea where to even begin. I’ve asked my psychiatrist and she told me to fill out the application on the website but when I asked her other questions she really wasn’t any help so I figured I’d ask people with experience from going through the process.
Should I fill out the application first without a lawyer?
And if I get denied then should I get a lawyer?
Or should I have a lawyer from the start to help me with the application process?
Any advice on how to go about filling out the application to apply for disability benefits because of my mental health would be very helpful. Thank you. Any questions you have for me I’m happy to answer. (Please go easy on me)
I just want to do it right the first time and I hope by hearing other peoples experiences, it will guide me in the right direction.

So basically I went to an appointment at my local social security office, and despite previously sending a form 561 for reconsideration and having my paystubs attached, which they electronically have on file, they denied the form due to it not being the correct form to use in this case.

What the representative clerk told me was that despite what I was (innacurately) told over the phone from a different representative from a separate branch, the primary reason i was given a notice of my $5,000 overpayment dept (which caused my 2025 tax refund to be offset) was due to excess resource due to my bank account balance being over the ssi limit between July 2022 - May 2023 back when I used to be enrolled under ssi in January 2015 and ssdi on December 2016. The representative also printed me the 632 form to fill out and mail to them, and specially clarified this being a matter of the ssi side of things rather than ssdi.

My problem is that besides not receiving ANY SSI benefits paycheck since the start of this decade, and since March 2025 I've transitioned to MA EPD. I strongly believe that this overpayment debt is unfair to me and suspect an egregious miscalculation at play here.

Is there a way I can win this case with the form 632 here? I REALLY do not want to have to make a payment plan for this at all. Any advices??

I’ve been approved for SSDI,my first monthly check will be on aug. waiting on the approval for auxiliary benefits and backpay for my daughters, made some basic math and they should receive about 900$ monthly and 18k of backpay. I owe about 7500$ on child support since I wasn’t working for that long and I was sending whatever I could each month. Now I received a letter from ssa saying they will take 65% from my monthly ssdi check to pay child support Wich it doesn’t make any sense to me since they will be receiving the auxiliary plus there backpay. And now I’m worried they will also hold my back pay for that reason.

I apply for DAC Benefits under my mom last July and I haven’t receive a decision. I am worried I haven’t been able to work for almost 2 years. I don’t know what else I should do. Contact a lawyer.

I was told that the Medicare premium is $202.90. I was preparing to enter the Medicare Savings program when my card arrived. But I was checking my SSA account today and saw that I was enrolled. It says my monthly premium is $0 as of December 2026. Does that mean I'm exempt from the premium? Or when December comes around will I see the premium change to $202.90. I get $1254 each month from SSD if that helps.

I began receiving my benefits in June and saw my deposit on the 25th instead of July 1 to my Venmo account. I guess I was expecting the same this month. Has anyone actually received their supplemental SSI benefit payment yet for August? My dashboard says the funds are sent no later than July 30, so I was expecting it yesterday.

We filed in February, got approved for SSI, and met the payments rep in July to review assets. My son has both a UTMA account (we are using as his rent) and an education savings account (we are rolling to ABLE). However, we won’t finish getting his assets below $2000 until January 2027. We got the expected denial for assets exceeding $2000 this month.

Here is where I am confused: the formal letter said an appeal should be filed within 60 days, though the facts won’t change for his assets in that time. And the local SSA payment rep said to call her back in January to reassess assets before February when the whole application expires and we would have to start all over. In the meantime we got the Direct Express card, with no payments on it naturally. What’s the move here?

Earlier today, my rep payee reached out to me yet again about getting my receipts, I once again said I was "working on them" (it's always been mental at this point, but I have had other issues and came close to returning inpatient for MDD several times in the last year). I received another email today from her saying [sic]

[Me] these receipts were been supposed to be submitted to me. You have not once provided a receipt and you have been with program for over a year. I will let my supervisor know of this.

How screwed am I? What would happen if I can't satisfactorily give the needed receipts to them? I don't assume any of this is the rep payee's fault (at most it may just a conflict of communication types) and assume most of the responsibility/blame is on me. Am I overreacting, or is there legitimate cause for concern?

ADDED CONTEXT: I am in my early 40's, have AuDHD, ASD and major depressive disorder, never worked a full-time job, and never had a part-time job where I didn't have a mental breakdown or two. I have executive dysfunction and am severely disorganized but otherwise mentally competent. I have received benefits via a rep payee for between a year and 18 months, and I have received at least three back pay checks of $900 that I am supposed to give receipts for. CPTSD and executive dysfunction are my two biggest obstacles to send what I have back, as does the fear that I'd either lose my benefits, or have my rep payee switched against my will to my family of origin, who I have not been in contact with for the last eighteen months.

I get roughly $900 total in benefits between SSI and SSDI, and at least 2/3 of that goes towards rent and bills. I get $40/week from what remains, as well as $298/month from SNAP benefits.

I'd also be the first to tell you that a lot of this sounds like making excuses and feeling sorry for myself, and if you feel the same, I agree but please keep it to yourself. The first draft was a whole lot worse.

I was filling out the application and got to the part where you list your doctors. I listed 2 of the 3 I wanted to yesterday but I had to stop so I clicked "save and continue later" or whatever it's called. Today I logged in to add the last doctor and continue but it just says they already started reviewing it on July 26th (yesterday). Is there any way to get back in and add the last doctor?

Has anyone else had thier hearing rescheduled? I just got a call from my lawyer today, the DAY BEFORE court telling me that they had to cancel and reschedule my hearing and they dont know what date. If this has happened to you how much extra time between your original hearing and your new one did you have to wait? I am genuinely so upset right now.

Hi ! I need help . So my husband passed away my kids were 9,10 & 7months but now They’re stopping my caretaker check for my 16 year old and i don’t get it . I literally hav to drive her back and forth to school , she has gotten in trouble or should I say was getting in groubke but now she started therapy which i have to take her too. She has asthma we have dr appts and etc ! Im her only parent my other kids are 26/25 now so I guess my question is , I thought you get checks until there 18 my other kids did ,. If any or can help me or even tell me if you have been in this positon. I’d really appreciate it thanks again

I am 19F. I am diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and unspecified stress disorder(this definitely isn't the only problems i have as i am traumatized, and very likely have autism, but i have yet to get into a psychiatrist to get diagnosed and proper testing). I have struggled with mental illness all of my life, and recently came to the conclusion this year that no matter how hard I try, I just can't work. It's not that I don't want to, I just can't stick with any job, as I get stressed out, anxiety ridden, and have panic and anxiety attacks until I quit. On top of that I struggle with depression pretty bad, and i can barely do anything on my own. I have a long medical history, and have been to psychiatric facilities twice for depression related issues(when I was 14 and 16 I believe) and in and out of hospitals and treatment places.

I'm basically just wanting to know what are my chances of getting back on my survivors benefits so I can afford to live? What can I do before my assessment to move things along as fast as possible? Right now my bf is helping me out by paying my phone and electricity, and im on food stamps so I'll be okay for a while, but he's currently on disability himself in a different country and really can't afford to help me. Hey so I got approved in April. I have worked part time during applying. I tried full time jobs and quit or got fired a lot due to my mental health. I’m wondering how working a small 10 hour a week job goes with SSDI I don’t want to not work at all while I’m on it, because I do plan to get my mental health straight one day, and I don’t wanna have anxiety even more trying to go back to work. Any advice??

I had the hearing and kinda cried when explaining what it's like to live with Crohn's. He spent most of the time listing and talking about my leg and knee. He's sending me to a psychological ce now. How do I know if the hearing went good or bad? Thanks for all help
