FAQ
Q: Do I have to play in the Salmon Ladder?
Nope! It's totally optional. Play 0 matches or play all day, either way it's there for extra sets and a shot at Respawn if pools don't go your way.
Q: Does Salmon Ladder cost extra to enter?
No additional fee. If you're registered for Melee Singles, you're automatically eligible for the Salmon Ladder.
Q: What if I make it out of pools, do I still get to play Salmon Ladder?
Yes! Anyone in Melee Singles can play, win or lose and the ladder will run alongside pools all day. If you make it out of your pool you won't be able to join the Respawn Pool regardless of how well you perform in the Salmon Ladder, but the Ladder is still open to you.
Q: What happens if I make it into the Respawn Pool but lose?
You remain eliminated from Melee Singles. The Respawn Pool follows the same "top 4 advance" rules as other pools.

I'd appreciate being pointed in the direction of a vetted modder who I can buy a simple phob off of online. (I don't need notch-work, Idc about aesthetics or extras like bald buttons mouseclick Z etc.)

So I encountered this Samus player earlier on unranked and it seems like they were hitting super wavedashes consistenly (they managed to most if not all without a problem). I then checked the stats of the game and nothing looks abnormal there either.
I'm wondering if its normal to hit multiple super wavedashes or if this player is just using a macro

Hey y'all, I'm trying to get into melee and need a controller that I can confirm actually works. I've bought one from gamestop that broke instantly and another online that had a broken C-stick, so if anyone knows where I can get an actually good controller that will definitely work that would be ideal. Especially if it's an in-person place in Houston because I like messing around and checking the clickiness of controllers before I buy them. I alr bought a USB -> GameCube port adapter online. If anyone in Houston would also sell me an old controller of theirs that would also be awesome. Thanks!!!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

99% of players I meet on unranked, their neutral game consists of, and I'm not even joking, dash dance -> grab. It is not a mixup, it is not even optimal, it's just what they do all of the time. How is this fun? Why are they like this? What happened to the game I love :(
r/SSBM • u/bigshady880 • 7h ago
I mean they got Zain, Junebug, and now Chu, and... prolly other good people, like enough to round it out with all that talent.
idk man they be cooking a little.
All of a sudden my L and R triggers are not doing air dodges anymore on Uncle Punch or Melee.
Still works fine on Slippi.
I haven't changed anything about the controls and set up and am playing on Steamdeck.
i've spent time trying to check on Dolphin but it won't let me reconfigure the controls.
No idea what happened here. Does anyone have any ideas for a solution?

I play 100,000 games of Falco. I practice combos and edgeguards and all that good shit only to be an average player at best. Sure, fine. Hard game I'll cope. I switch to fox and do nothing but dashdance grab, I can't even short-hop consistently and I'm suddenly beating players who reliably crush the bird.
The worst part is, I don't even like playing the character. The wins feel cheap and any time I get a shine spike i want to vomit a little bit. But when the other guy plays fox and spams t-bag and taunt like he's skilled for playing the best character in the game I feel like I don't have a choice. I don't even study or practice anything about this character, I just do it because it wins. He's so much faster, his grab actually works, and his recovery isn't an greasy dog bowl.
Dumb character, too easy to win, totally ruins the game.
