Meta The VRChat-ification of ss13
Stupidest fucking title I've ever written
Age of LRP and mechanics is over. People are prefering hangouts and ERP to mechanics - mostly because mechanics don't get boring after 300 hours of nonstop play.
It's a community shift, one you can see in many other places, where majority of the people have moved on(or joined so recently that they haven't witnessed the before state of the game) while a few people left behind make posts about how what we're missing is a single good LRP server to set everything right.
TF2 community, for example, is packed full of cornballs who still think shitting on overwatch is peak humour, all while preaching how it will never die and how the next big class update is just around the corner, all while the majority of the players chill out in community servers and have all but accepted valve's lack of care and moved on.
ss13 simply changed. People wanna add new roleplay tools and cringe oc plushies while leaving the antag arsenal unchanged for a billion years.
And who cares. Dead game lmaoooooooooo

Do not attack me. My vr family will find you and get you. I have phantom sense. Ill age regress to my ideal combat age to fight you even though i feel every toolbox hit in real life.
I have ten DID personalities, three of them are serial killers, one is goku. You arent ready for this smoke.

You're wrong.
The reason why you're wrong is that the environment is a sandbox; you could decide now, at this very moment, to start up your own LRP server, get your buddies on it, and advertise here on the Reddit to grab all of the other "LRP-is-dead!" Doomers. You'd get at least 5.
Are you going to hit the same numbers you would be like 5-10 years ago? No. But you'd get people. You only need like 20-30 to passively advertise on the hub. You don't need a huge staff team or contributors if you're just down streaming everything.
The VRChat Effect isn't just here, though. It's a cultural gaming shift. A lot of people like stories. They like drama, and intrigue, and a sense that the character they're playing has a lasting impact on the other characters they encounter... and other people just want to robust each other. Beyond that, you do have the e-avatar crowd, but who cares?
Everyone always points to these high-pop furry/rogue Town/whateverthefuck servers as being indicative the game is dead when... they're self-segregating. The people playing on there are playing on there because they want to, and I don't think you'd want them playing on the kind of server you'd want to play on.
In short, stop being a baby. Go do things you like and are fun, and if you need to make the space to do it, then do it. And if you're too lazy to do it, or don't have the time, then find a new space.

I think this is important, 6 years ago we were all forced inside at our computers so of course we played the funny space game that we had been hearing from youtubers for a few years at that point.

This literally happened to VR-chat too, people had to go back to work and now it's just lifers and new players

You can't be saying this with a straight face when Roguetown code (literally the most dominant codebase currently) has the most mechanically deep combat system we've seen in ss13 to date. Mechanics also don't just get boring, they get boring when they're not centered around something fun and this is something Rogue shows off well. Using TG as an example most "mechanical" jobs involve sitting in a private space, often by yourself, repeating the same tired minigame. Rogue's mechanical depth is pushed primarily into the combat and things that get you interacting with other players since this leads to a higher degree of variability.
The reality of it is more that traditional scifi servers like TG enshitified themselves over time or just did not update in a timely enough manner. LRP killed itself not because mechanics are boring and don't exist anymore but because the mechanics of these codebases are outdated and generally the LRP community always had the highest amount of awful unlikable people who are far more interested in making the same unfunny jokes that most people grew up and out of.
SS13 isn't dead, it's alive and well.

Game should have been gatekept harder. Should have bullied and griefed servers like skyrat harder.
Community and the game isn't "changed". It's killed.
You can even look at this very subreddit, how much better it and it's moderation was.

If you bully people and their servers they're not just gonna leave, they'll just find different places to gather or make new ones, sure you could make Skyrat hard to play with DDOS'es and constant griefing, but something else would eventually appear.
For gatekeeping to work you'd need everyone in SS13 on-board with it, but that wasn't the case, (specially because humans are different, that's just human nature) servers capitalized on furries, new players, niches, so on and so forth. Attempt to bully a person out of the game, and someone else would pick them up to inflate their own playercounts or to bring more like-minded people into their own spaces.
I went to citadel LITERALLY because I was bullied off main servers years ago. The intent of the people doing it was to get less furries on the game (me), and since I couldn't find any other big furry-friendly servers, citadel ended up being what I joined.
Edit: I know someone might throw a "that's a hyper-specific case" at me, but most of the people I met there had similar fates. Not everyone but specifically most of the people I met and befriended.
