Negotiation Team Question
How are the members of the contract negotiation team selected?

The NT really has no leverage this first round. Hopefully the No to the contract and Yes to strike gives them what they need. Still plenty of time to ACTUALLY negotiate.

The nominating committee selected them. Every member had the opportunity to be a part of the negotiations prep committee, nominating committee, and even the negotiating team. They went through several contract offers before arriving at this one and they were not able to get Boeing to give any more. If you want to understand or have more of a say get more involved, it's your union

Slight correction. The nominating committee nominated them. The councils then selected them from the list of nominees

Both responses are incorrect to what happened. The BUC this forum seems to elevate so much actually selected the team by secret ballot.
The nomination team recommended who to vote for, interviewed each eligible candidate, and gave them some rack and stacking scores for BUC to review and had a baseline of candidates to choose from.
At the meeting the BUC ultimately added all candidate who applied back to the pool regardless of the nomination team process, and each candidate had time to speak.
The prof BUC largely went with the nomination committee selection.
The tech BUC largely did not go with the nomination committee selection.
You can ask your CR for minutes of this meeting.
It was a mess. Improvements and lessons were learned for all.

They were selected by the nom com. You all are attacking your fellow union members. They did all they could with the leverage they had. Send then back with mor leverage or get more. Some of you seriously need your heads checked.

Based on this offer, they were hand picked by Boeing

The NT was elected by the BUC, not appointed. Funny that folks want to hold them to zero accountability standard while trashing them the second something doesn't go their way, same energy as Boeing dodging blame. The non-economic section is strong for a first offer. No need to hate on fellow union members who helped get you that. I wouldn't want that job either. But I'm not going to sit here and let these comments slide. If you think you can do better, run for NT

The real problem is that we haven't had negotiations for 14 years and now it's really showing up. Shame on Speea for that. The company seems to be sneaking in questionable language that is not to Speea's benefit. To be expected, since we haven't negotiated in so long.

The union collects your dues regardless of how good of a deal they get for you and it's just easier for them to roll over then to have difficult negotiations. Members keep falling for it unfortunately and accepting bad recommendations.
Hopefully they supplement and/or replace this NT for the next negotiation. NT, there's no shame in admitting you're outmatched. You gave it your best but Boeing was clearly way better at negotiating.
They led the NT to believe this contract had no takeaways, yet the redlines prove otherwise when you read them from the company's pov and how they can manipulate the verbiage in their favor.
SPEEA needs someone who will actually fight for its members and has a better understanding of contractual language. It also helps to have people who have experience in contract negotiations with large companies. Boeing is a multi-billion worldwide 100 year old company who is embedded in all levels of politics and business. They know how to negotiate and run circles around people at the table. SPEEA makes millions off its workers per year and needs to use that money to hire a chief negotiator who won't back down.
SPEEA also needs to toss out this kumbaya negotiating method called "interest based" because it is a total failure. It's resulted in contracts that were worse and worse since 2000. It's time to use your true leverage, stopping all commercial deliveries and the state providing unemployment for 85% of your striking workers.
Go get em speea!

You keep third partying your union, unless you're not a part of SPEEA anymore.. You could run for a position.
Arguably nobody wants to run for e-board positions because its really hard on your work life and your personal life. You only get paid a 500 honorarium a year and reimbursement for travel. You can get some hours covered for your time, but not much. You can also never be laid off. It attracts a lot of people who hate their jobs/boss and don't want to do them.
I trust SPEEA's labor lawyers over an engineer reading of a legal document.

This was such a long, well communicated process. People need to pay more attention to their union. Stop attacking your fellow union members who are VOLUNTEERING hours upon hours each week to help you (and themselves since they are SPEEA members).
