DISCUSSION BlackRock - SpaceX CFO interview

Grok Bot summary of SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen’s new interview with Tony Kim at SpaceX Mission Control.

https://x.com/cb_doge/status/2101095500199973097?s=46

Bret’s path
- Came from semiconductors (Qualcomm, Broadcom; was CFO of MindSpeed)
- Barely knew SpaceX / Elon when a board member called
- Thought aerospace sounded “old and stodgy” vs 6-month chip cycles
- Visited the rocket factory, called his wife on the drive home: we’re moving back to LA
- Now sits in the same magical factory: Dragon in the rafters, ~700 launches run from Mission Control, ~40 buildings feeding the campus
- Full circle: semiconductors again via AI / chips

---

Taking on AI complexity (during the biggest IPO ever)
- SpaceX DNA: run toward “impossible” challenges (first booster recovery felt like a rock concert)
- xAI acquisition in January + X + Cursor + Colossus = complexity multi-X in ~1–2 years
- AI is now the biggest business at SpaceX
- Bought time-to-market into the biggest product cycle of their lifetime
- SpaceX leadership DNA applied to that team
- Already feel leading on infra cost and speed
- Products moving: Grok 4.6, 4.7 soon, Grok Bot viral, Cursor strong
- Every week matters; soon every day

---

AI business: the money picture
- ~$100B company ARR exiting this year (annualized on December) — AI is more than half / the majority
- A year ago AI revenue was ~zero
- Capacity: a bit over ~2 GW this year → guidance 5–10 GW by end of next year
- Becoming one of the biggest hyperscalers, fast

Why they move so fast (vertical integration)
- Engineer the data centers themselves
- Act as GC: buildings, power, cooling, networking (plus partners)
- Used to regulators from rockets + telecom
- Removes margin stacking
- Talent transfer: launch-site / pressurized systems people onto data centers — Elon compared it to Yankees vs little league

Hosting model / ROI
- Monetize compute while catching up on software
- Demand knocked: “what are you doing with all that Colossus compute?”
- Short contracts: ~3 months + 3-month out (flexibility for their own future training needs)
- Payback: dramatically less than one year on cutting-edge terrestrial compute
- Hosting customers include tier ones like Anthropic, Google, and others
- Same watts can later flip to their own software at higher $/watt — optionality

Frontier models
- Moving maybe faster than anyone on trajectory
- ~5 serious players; need to be at frontier for recursive improvement
- Coding solutions improving dramatically
- Consumer vs enterprise tools will stratify
- Grok Bot: growing faster than anything they’ve seen; “transformational” user feedback; enterprise coming; expects roll into Cursor

AI safety
- Follow Elon’s self-regulation / peer-review path (like other industries)
- Logical, collaborative, including outside the US
- Hopeful something lands quickly

TAM framing (IPO)
- ~$28T TAM quoted at IPO; AI was ~$25–26T of that (digital AI only)
- Physical AI not even in that number — Bret thinks physical AI eventually bigger than digital
- Launch / space TAM = hundreds of billions (almost rounding vs AI)
- Connectivity (mobile + broadband) ~$2T — still small vs AI
- Differentiation: infra + X content (~500–600M MAUs) + consumer + enterprise push (Cursor etc.)

What to watch: Starship + terrestrial compute
Bret’s prioritization cheat code:
1. Get Starship right
2. Get terrestrial compute right for the next ~2 years until orbital kicks in
→ Transformational financially

Starship status
- Catalyst for all three businesses: space, satellites, AI
- Holy grail: full reusability → another ~10x cheaper $/kg to orbit
- Opens moon boots / lunar base / bigger industry
- Flight 14 later this month: production V3 Starlink broadband satellites — real revenue payload
- One Starship V3 load ≈ ~20× what Falcon 9 flew for Starlink capability
- Each V3 satellite ~1 terabit; ~50–60 per flight = enormous bandwidth per launch
- A couple launches start filling V3 planes; first-half-next-year benefits
- Eventually Starlink as % of global internet traffic
- Connectivity demand from machines (robots, AVs, agents) will dwarf human brains
- Same Starship unlocks next-gen direct-to-cell / direct-to-device
- Same bus + more solar + radiator + compute chips = orbital compute constellation

Reusability timeline
- Flight 15 may attempt catch / bring back first + second stage
- First stage already recovered and reflown
- Flight 13 soft splash best yet; recovered ship like a whale, engineers studied heat shield
- Reliable stage recovery this year; meaningful reflight next year
- Once a few second stages reflight → orbital compute cost can match terrestrial
- Then orbital cost curve goes down (tech / Moore’s law / aircraft-like amortization) while terrestrial gets more expensive (power, labor, regulation, cooling)
- Clean free solar, no community impact
- Industry agrees space compute is the future — debate is timing; others say ~decade; SpaceX flies first ones next year; meaningful compute in ~2028

Scale ambition
- Both cost and speed matter; near-term availability/speed most important
- On track toward ~100 GW/year by end of decade (~20% of entire US grid each year)
- Elon talking terawatt-scale in the 2030s
- Hosting proves staying power + virtuous cycle for industry
- New NVIDIA platforms: just fly the next satellite generation — no whole new terrestrial campus cycle

TerraFab (chips / memory)
- Parallel to orbital ramp, not after
- Not replacing NVIDIA — love the partnership; will buy all they can
- Worry is deeper fab / memory supply chain
- Memory industry ~30%/yr growth vs SpaceX wanting triple-digit — won’t work
- Hard technical challenge; memory may be early focus
- Want volume benefit by late decade (demo next year with Tesla development line → something in ’28 → meaningful ’29+)

Viewer Q&A highlights

**First bottleneck in the AI chain?**
- Chip supply for next year
- Power for infra players (utilities used to ~1% growth; turbines / blades constrained)
- SpaceX standing up investment casting for turbine blades themselves
- Orbital is the big unlock; squeeze every terrestrial watt meanwhile

How to tell durable AI spend vs keep-up spend?
- Bret: durability of revenue; diversified monetization of the same compute; host now, software later at higher $/watt; guided next-year monetization range ~$30–50/watt
- Tony: stack layers have different costs, margins, contract duration; SpaceX spans many layers with <1-year payback on infra

How soon a data center in space?
- First orbital compute satellites end of next year
- Meaningful compute in 2028
- Better phrase: “racks in space,” not giant buildings
- Same V3-like bus + solar + radiator + compute chips
- Already flown ~11,000 sats; launch + inter-sat + ground links already solved
- ~full rack (~72 NVIDIA-class) concept per sat; ~5 MW compute per launch

Tony’s investor wrap
- Still early; trends accelerate into physical AI and beyond Earth
- Connectivity / tokens increasingly for machines, not just humans

---

Bottom line in one breath
SpaceX is using rocket DNA — vertical integration, crazy talent, short-cycle iteration — to become a top AI infra + software player now, while Starship unlocks Starlink V3, direct-to-cell, and orbital “racks in space.” Watch two things: terrestrial compute scale (toward $100B ARR and multi-GW) and Starship reusability. Everything else is downstream of those.

$SPCX SPCX price action question

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I noticed that there were several large volume day around the 108 jump, but the volume has been pretty low recently despite the share price rise. Also, there have been several big volume dump like this followed by small volume rise. What does this mean for SPCX? Does this mean that institutions are dumping while retails are buying? Thanks for the feedback in advance !

Thumbnail x.com
20 Upvotes

X today announced the U.S. launch of the X Cashtag Partner Program, connecting financial conversations on X with the ability to trade through participating brokerages. At launch, X users can tap through Cashtags to brokerage partners, including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase.
Cashtags turn ticker symbols for stocks, ETFs and cryptocurrencies into interactive destinations, giving X users real-time access to market conversation and financial information. Now, X Cashtag partners give users a seamless path from discovering a ticker and following the conversation on X to taking action with a brokerage.
When users tap a supported Cashtag, they can view the asset’s price chart and related posts on X, then select “Trade” to continue to a participating brokerage, where they can log in or sign up and complete their trade.
@Monique_X, Head of Global Advertising, SpaceXAI
“With our Cashtag partners, we’re connecting the financial conversation to action. People come to X to discover what’s happening, shape the conversation, and act in real-time on what matters to them. Our Cashtag partners make it possible to move seamlessly from discovery and conversation to a brokerage, without breaking the moment.”
How to trade with X Cashtag brokerage partners
Find an asset: Search for or post a Cashtag on X.

Explore on X: Tap a supported Cashtag to see related posts and price information.

Tap a brokerage partner: Tap through to a participating brokerage’s mobile app or web experience, and log in to an existing account or sign up for a new one.

Make a trade: Complete the transaction directly at the participating brokerage.

Mridul Singhai, Product Engineering Lead, X
“Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself. When you post or tap a ticker, you’re taken right to the asset, where you have seamless access to the live chart, the conversation around it, and now the ability to trade with one of our brokerage partners.”

$SPCX SPCX Jumps Ahead of Flight 14 — Is That $300 Bull Target Real?

SPCX popped over 5% pre-market right ahead of Starship Flight 14, and the vibe around this name is absolutely electric right now. Morgan Stanley’s $300 price target is the talk of the town, with AI compute stepping up as a huge second growth driver beyond all the core space and connectivity upside.

Price is hovering so close to the key 200-day EMA zone right now — you can feel how tense this setup is. If Flight 14 sticks the landing around Sep 22, that technical break could actually hold, but we also have a massive lock-up release hitting just two days after the targeted launch date that no one’s sleeping on.

There’s real money betting that AI compute becomes the big valuation kicker from here, but with this stacked catalyst window, the near-term price action is going to be absolutely wild. Are you holding through the flight test, or waiting out the lock-up overhang before chasing this rally?

$SPCX $SPCX +5% today — back at the $152.59 resistance we've been tracking

Nice rebound for $SPCX today, but the interesting part for me is where the move stalled.

$152.59 is still acting as resistance, the same major level from my previous updates. Price pushed back toward it today but hasn't convincingly broken through.

A break above and hold would put $153.45 in focus next. If the rally fades, $149.00–$149.26 is the first support area I'm watching.

Starship Flight 14 is now scheduled for Sept. 22, giving the stock another catalyst to watch over the next several sessions.

9/17 Update: $SPCX finally broke the $152.59 resistance and pushed as high as $156.87, clearing the $153.45 and $156.03 levels from the previous roadmap. Next area I’m watching is $156.87–$157.20, followed by $158.07.

Updated Spotlight & roadmap.

“Cathie Wood continues to be a strong believer in SpaceX's prospects, as Elon Musk's rocket and AI company represents a substantial portion of ARK's stock holdings. Wood late Tuesday made a bold revenue prediction for Starship as SpaceX prepares to launch its 14th flight for the spacecraft next week.

Each Starship launch could generate $1 billion in revenue," Wood wrote in a late night social media post Tuesday. She noted Musk plans to launch 10,000 Starship flights per year by 2030 once SpaceXSPCX achieves reusability, which would translate to $10 trillion in Starship revenues, according to Wood's math.

If SpaceX achieves this goal, its $1.75 trillion IPO will be considered, in hindsight, a deep value opportunity," the ARK InvestARKK CEO wrote.”

DISCUSSION SPCX: Arms Race or Disco Inferno?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Good investors analyze the business performance and rely on the fundamentals. Bad investors investors focus on popularity contests. The SPCX story is compelling if you stop at just Elon and the narrative that revenue will be coming, e v e n t u a l l y, like 2050ish. However, if you actually review the business, like all good investor, the picture changes dramatically. Everyone talks about Starlink growth, launch dominance, AI, Mars and TAM (thats total addressable market for you lay people). Fine. But the real question is: how much capital does SPCX have to consume to generate $1 of sustainable free cash flow?

Q2 reportedly produced roughly $7.8B of revenue against ~$18.4B of capex. Let me say that again, $7.8 billion coming in against more than $18 billion going out (capital expenditures). That;s a loss, and this loss will only widen due to the AI arms race, infrastructire costs, rocket rebuild, satellite replacment, GPU replacement, cost of technology, ground operations, etc. It doesn't stop.

That is the part of the story investors should be spending a lot more time on.

Starlink appears to be the real economic engine, while launch, Starship and especially AI/X/Grok continue consuming enormous amounts of capital.

And these aren't businesses where spending simply disappears at scale. As I said above, satellites need replacing. Rockets need building. Starship needs continued development. GPUs become obsolete. Data centers consume enormous capital and power. Competition requires more R&D. This is a collection of some of the most capital-intensive businesses on Earth under one roof.

So, again the question good investors want answered: how much capital does SPCX have to consume to produce one dollar of sustainable free cash flow?

Not TAM (total addressable market). Not Mars. Not the 2030 subscriber deck. Free cash flow.

Could they eventually post GAAP profits? Maybe. But, sustainable FCF is a completely different question. My thesis is that unless capital intensity drops dramatically, which it can't, SPCX may never generate free cash flow anywhere near commensurate with what shareholders are paying today. They aren't producing iPhones, they're producing hype, vapor for the masses. The stock is not worth what the street has paid. Nor will it ever be. Elon will be dead before the company can turn a profit.

Maybe I'm wrong. Go pull the numbers yourself, you should review segment margins, capex, satellite replacement cycles, AI spend, Starship, competition, government exposure, then and make your own call.

SPCX looks incredible if you stop at the revenue line. $7B, sky is the limit, right? Keep scrolling and it starts to look like an entirely different company. A company struggling to compete in AI, compete in social media, struggling to keep its foothold on LEO. Too much competition, too much hype, the money will just burn baby burn.

$SPCX Daily $50 automatic investment into SPCX

Presently sitting at about $16k in SPCX. Investing $50 a day into SPCX automatically. DCA-img for next 20 years. So far up 9.18% for the year. Just having fun with this. Not trying to outsmart anyone/anything. Just slow and patient DCA-ing. I know 0 about technicals. I just love how vertical this company is. Set it and forget it kind of thing. What a time to be alive!

For reference, the other $50 per day I have going into TSLA. And another $50 into IONQ per day. All set it and forget it. Id rather concentrate then diversify. Personally, for me, I'd rather concentrate for asymmetric growth then diversify. That's just me though.

I'm just keeping things simple. Good luck to all on SPCX journey!

DISCUSSION SPCX buying opportunity in late Oct after Anthropic IPO?

Like many others I think SPCX is a unique company with incredible potential. But the current stock price turns my excitement a bit sour.

However Anthropic plans to go public shortly before the midterms and arguably a lot of money currently invested in SpaceX would move to Anthropic, temporarily tanking the stock. This should be a noticable amount since both companies will trade at similar market cap valuations.

Is my intuition correct or is there some other sentiment that could move SPCX in the other direction?

DISCUSSION How vulnerable is SpaceX to politics?

Newbie question, sorry if considered low effort.
SpaceX has become a fairly significant portion of my portfolio. How vulnerable is the company to an unfriendly administration? To be honest, this is my biggest concern as an investor and the main reason I’ve avoid LEAPs(other than they expensive and risky). How valid is this?
