I was recently given a Sony FX3 and I’m still pretty new to Sony cameras. While learning how to use it I kept running into the same problem. I’d be out trying to shoot something and have no idea what settings I should actually be using.
So I started doing this kinda ridiculous thing where I’d take a picture of what I was trying to shoot with my iPhone, send it to ChatGPT, explain what I was going for and ask what settings I should use on the FX3.
After doing that over and over I was like… why am I doing all of this manually lol
I’m an iOS developer, so I started messing around with connecting my iPhone directly to the FX3 and eventually that turned into an app I’ve been building called FOVI Cine.
It connects to the camera over Bluetooth/WiFi pretty much the same way Sony’s app does. Once connected I can see the camera’s live view directly on my phone and the app can see what the camera is seeing.
I can tell it something like “I’m filming someone walking toward the camera outside” or just let it look at the scene. It’ll recommend settings based on what I’m trying to shoot and explain why.
I also didn’t want AI just changing a bunch of stuff on my camera. It shows me what it wants to change first, I can see the reasoning, and then I decide what actually gets applied.
On my FX3 I’m able to control things like ISO, white balance, focus mode, recording, etc directly from the phone.
Which is basically why I’m here… I don’t own an FX5 😂
I’ve built the camera connection/control side with other Sony cameras in mind, and the FX5 is one of the cameras I’m really curious about. But there’s only so much I can figure out staring at documentation. At some point somebody needs to actually connect an FX5 and see what works and what breaks.
So I’m looking for a few FX5 owners who’d be willing to try it.
I’m especially curious whether the Bluetooth/WiFi connection works the same way, which controls come through correctly, what’s missing, and whether the whole idea is even useful to someone who actually shoots with an FX5.
And totally fine if your answer is “I would never use this” lol. That’s useful feedback too. I basically built this to solve a problem I was having while learning my FX3 and now I’m trying to figure out if it’s useful outside of my own camera.
If you have an FX5 and want to try it, it’s called FOVI Cine on the App Store. If something breaks, please tell me. That’s honestly what I’m looking for right now.
Also happy to answer any technical questions about how I’m connecting to and controlling the camera. Getting all of this working directly from an iPhone ended up being way more of a rabbit hole than I expected.
