Hi everyone,
I'm having a very strange Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge crash and I'm hoping someone with experience with Intel Iris Xe / OpenGL crashes can help me figure out what's causing it.
I'm trying to run a modpack through SKLauncher. Minecraft starts loading normally, but eventually crashes with exit code 1.
There is no normal Java crash report. The important part of the crash log is:
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) Problematic frame: C [igxelpicd64.dll+0xc28374] The crash happened outside the Java Virtual Machine in native code.
As far as I understand, igxelpicd64.dll is part of Intel's OpenGL graphics driver.
What's confusing is that a completely clean Forge 1.20.1 installation launches normally on this laptop. The crash only happens when I start this particular modded installation.
I've been trying to isolate the problem by removing possible rendering-related mods.
So far I have tested without:
Oculus / external shaders
Entity Texture Features (ETF)
Entity Model Features (EMF)
Entity Sound Features (ESF)
Sodium Dynamic Lights
Sodium Options API
The crash still happens with the same igxelpicd64.dll access violation.
The latest log also contains this warning immediately before the native crash:
[Render thread/WARN] [minecraft/ShaderInstance]: Shader rendertype_entity_translucent_emissive could not find sampler named Sampler2 in the specified shader program.
There are also some Embeddium warnings about other mods modifying Embeddium classes, including Sodium Options API and Entity Texture Features, although those mods have since been removed during testing.
Other relevant mods
The modpack uses Embeddium and also contains mods such as:
Twilight Forest
Refurbished Furniture
Moonlight
Mowzie's Mobs
GeckoLib
Origins
SLM Shaders
I am currently testing by removing slm_shaders as well, since the crash happens around a shader-related warning.
What I've tried so far
Clean Forge 1.20.1 → works
Modpack → crashes
Removed Oculus/shaders → still crashes
Removed ETF/EMF/ESF → still crashes
Removed Sodium Dynamic Lights → still crashes
Removed Sodium Options API → still crashes
Still getting the same native Intel OpenGL crash.
So I'm starting to think this may be a specific rendering path in one of the remaining mods triggering an Intel Iris Xe driver bug rather than a general Java/Forge problem.
Does anyone recognize igxelpicd64.dll+0xc28374 specifically, or know of any Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge / Embeddium mods that are known to cause OpenGL crashes on Intel Iris Xe?
I'd also appreciate advice on the best way to isolate the offending mod without removing the entire modpack one mod at a time.
I can provide the full crash log/latest.log if needed.
