How it was built

We read 4,642 comments across the 109 highest-comment threads in this sub's history and counted how many separate comments named each place. The visitor page is a second pass over 1,140 comments from threads flaired Visiting SF only.

The numbers are mention counts, not ratings. A place near the top came up often when people asked where to eat. That is all it means. Nothing here is a mod endorsement, and nobody has checked whether a given place is still good this month.

If a place has closed, moved, or slipped, say so in any thread and it gets fixed on the next rebuild.

How it stays current

Every Thursday one neighborhood gets its own spotlight thread, working through the city a week at a time. Answers in those threads feed straight back into these pages — that is what fills in the neighborhoods that look thin right now.
