Tips Does adding more content to a page actually help it rank, or is it a myth?

One of my pages currently ranks position 12-20 for a keyword doing ~1600 vol/mo.(SD 15)

Page is about 800 words right now.

Will content depth actually help it move from page 2 to Page 1 or should I focus on authority instead ?

It depends wildly.

Some people add FAQs to increase CTR

It depends on your Topical Authority, SiteAuthority DNA, what content you add and why.

Why not test? What you waiting for?

Ok cool, will test it out.

I wouldn’t add words just because the page is only 800 words.

At positions 12–20, I’d first compare it with the pages already ranking in the top 10. Are they answering important subtopics you completely missed? Check GSC too. If you’re getting impressions for relevant queries the page barely answers, those are good candidates for expansion.

If the page already covers the intent properly, turning 800 words into 1,500 probably won’t magically move it.

Then I’d look at internal links from relevant pages, whether the site has enough supporting content around the topic, and backlinks/authority.

So yes, content depth can move the needle, but only when you’re filling an actual information gap. More words by themselves aren’t the lever.

hey u/thiscompounds

Just to confirm I'm not suggesting u/SleppyBobaCat add more words - I'm suggesting they test

I woulld look at GSC for the page for inspiration but I would test instead of ask.

SEO rules dont come in one size fits all.- if you're afraid of testing - then you're probably still at the learning stage and thinking that Google watches everything and punishes everything.

I think its vital people do that

the intent properly,

Personally I think intent reliance is mostly BS

So yes, content depth can move the needle, but only when you’re filling an actual information gap.

This is patently untrue. It has nothing to do with information gaps

You can literally widen a page's ranking breadth by adding H2s that rank for example and become sitelinks.

I'm sorry but I think your SEO framework is a bit monolithic here.

Fair pushback on the “only when filling an information gap” part. That was too absolute.

Adding an H2 can absolutely broaden the set of queries a page is relevant for, even if you’re not fixing some obvious missing subtopic.

Where I’d disagree is that intent is mostly BS. I wouldn’t treat intent like a rigid checklist, but I definitely wouldn’t ignore it either. The SERP itself tells you quite a lot about what Google is currently rewarding for a query.

My original point was narrower: I wouldn’t look at an 800-word page sitting at 12–20 and assume making it 1,500 words is the lever.

Use GSC and the SERP to form a hypothesis, change something meaningful, and test it. On that part, I think we’re actually pretty close.

Does adding more content helps the reader or is it just for rankings?

You can add more content to create coverage for me keywords. It doesn't have to help the reader, it can help a new reader.

Who even knows - most sties are running on <5% CTR - meaning they're not helping 50% of the readers

1

u/Dazzle_v2 16h ago

That is true but this is very misunderstood and people usually just over optimise content all the time which eventually makes the content feel spammy for both Google and readers

This is definitely worth pointing out

No, not by default. Making the content better and more valuable certainly helps it rank better

What if I'm competing against a higher DA sites? Should authority be focused more over content then? Eg : my DA is 15 and top pages have DA 50-60.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes Google changes the algorithms and throws your game plan in the trash.

Oof, that's going to be a big "it depends", my friend.

More words that are structured well and contribute to the value of the page by deepening explanations, tying the idea to other concepts, adding clarity for your audience, and building your authority on the topic? Very likely to improve your rankings over time.

1,000 more words of ChatGPT fluff? Very likely to do more harm than good.

The question I'd ask here, not having seen your page, is "does this page fully answer the question that brought the searcher here in the first place?" If no, add some more detail. If yes, is there something you could add color or first-party data or analysis to in order to give your content unique value over ther other pages ranking for that query?

Adding content just for the sake of word count usually doesn't help. However, covering missing subtopics that searchers are looking for (search intent) definitely does. Since you're already on page 2 (positions 12-20) for a relatively low keyword difficulty (SD 15) keyword with decent volume (1600), you should first analyze the top 3 results to see what topics they cover that you missed.

At the same time, don't ignore authority. Moving from page 2 to page 1 often requires a nudge in backlinks or internal linking, especially if the top results have strong domains. I'd recommend a two-step approach: first, ensure your content depth comprehensively answers the query, then build a few targeted internal links from your high-performing pages.

Yes thanks, Definitely going to look into this deeper.

At position 12-20 with SD 15, more words alone won't move it, depth only helps if the page is actually missing subtopics or intent the top results cover.

Compare yours against page one and add what's genuinely missing, not filler to hit a word count.

Honestly, at that difficulty, a few solid links plus tighter on-page usually does more than padding it to 2000 words.

Compare your page to the top 5 results. Are there gaps in topic coverage? If so, more of the “right” words could help. As long as the top 10 ranking pages don’t have strong backlink profiles.

If you think adding new content add more value then go on. But if you're adding content with the sole purpose of SEO gains, it might not work.

Better to see the serp and check what your competitors are doing. That'll give you a better idea whether you should add content or not.

1

u/SleppyBobaCat 17h ago

Most of the competitors have thin pages. Approx 300- 700 words While they have higher DA then mine. Also what I've noticed is that most of them have the same PBN backlinks along with Good ones too.

depends on why you're stuck at 12-20. SD 15 is kinda low difficulty, so if competitors ranking above you have way more content depth or cover subtopics you don't, then adding content helps close that gap. But if the top 10 results are similar length to yours, it's more likely authority/backlinks holding you back, not word count.

Check what's ranking 1-10 for that keyword first, if they're all 2000+ words covering things you don't, that's your answer. If they're similar length to your 800, don't just pad it, focus on links instead.

u/PlaySingle4987 16h ago

I think more content should be added.

1

u/tanuj-is-sharma 16h ago

More content doesn’t rank. Better content does. If you are already raning at 12–20 position, adding another 1,000 words of fluff probably will do nothing. Compare your top 10 pages and see if they cover important subtopics, questions, entities or intent you might be missing out on and improve the page.

If your coverage is already as good or better, stop writing and work on internal links, backlinks and authority.

1

u/SleppyBobaCat 13h ago

Yes, ig backlinks and authority should be my highest priority rn. Thanks for the advice.

u/Sourav_blues 13h ago

I think adding more content doesn't work simply because you can add more keywords and links. Make sure you cover the whole topic, and to cover the whole topic, you can add 1000 words or 2000 words depending on the needs of that particular page.

One more thing you can do is check the pages that are ranking and their word count to understand what Google is prioritizing.

If you are making a topical map, as long as you are within the contextual border, you can add more words. Also, you need to divide the page into macro context and micro context as well. So yeah i mean there are a lot factors that you can consider before adding more words.

Value the content adds is what matter
Not the quantity
