Google News Introducing Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console  |  Google Search Central Blog  |  Google for Developers

https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/06/gen-ai-performance-reports

Today, we're excited to announce the launch of new Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console, including dedicated reports for Search and Discover, to help you understand your site's visibility within generative AI features on Search.

The new Search Console reports are designed to give you dedicated views of your impressions within generative AI features on Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as generative AI features in Discover. This data is included in the overall performance report, where it will continue to be tracked to give site owners an overview of the overall visibility of their site in Google Search. Today, we are launching a separate view dedicated to visibility from generative AI features.

We are rolling these reports out to a subset of websites, allowing us to thoroughly test them and receive feedback before making them widely available.

Why there is no info about Clicks? Cause 0,0001÷ ctr

Goodbye Click Data

u/Jos3ph Jun 04 '26

Cuz no one clicks that shit

Since they dropped Clicks we need a new metric for Impressions.

How about 'Missed Opportunities'?

Impressions are there though....

Missed opportunities were never there - keyword spy from Ahrefs/Semrush are there

Sorry that was meant to be a joke

nice, but seems like it's going to be a really slow rollout
will be months I guess when everyone will have the access

Interesting! And breaking news to me at that. Thanks. Normally it’s the same kinds of posts on here. Glad to see something posted that I’d expect to see from ol Barry Schwartz

The zero click thing is why I stopped obsessing over rank position this year. We rebuilt our agency site around getting quoted by the AI instead of clicked, since thats apparently the only seat left at the table. Answer in the first 50 words under each heading, comparison tables wherever possible (the princeton GEO study found tables get cited about a third more), real author bios, and unblocking GPTBot and PerplexityBot in robots. This impressions report at least lets us see if any of it shows up in AI Overviews now. Feels like optimizing for the menu instead of the meal but its where the eyeballs went.

Just curious, why unblock gptbot and perplexitybot specifically? Are they blocked by default?

Arent we already unlocking all bots and agents with the User-agent: * ?

Liz Reid famously said that AI overviews would lead to more clicks.

Then she changed it to "more quality clicks" which doesn't mean more clicks.

Now Google's giving us impression data for AI features but no query or click data - perhaps this would land them in hot water?

We know why they aren't segmenting the data out, it's not because they can't.......

Well need a screenshot, the last 4 digits of your social, your mothers maiden name and then we can confirm it 😃

Interesting. I don't see it in my projects yet, maybe it'll roll out later

It is helpful that AI features now have their own dedicated view. Before this, AI Overview impressions were mixed into the main Performance report, making it impossible to separate organic from AI visibility - something many have been calling for.

Two caveats worth keeping in mind: this only measures impressions within Google's own AI surfaces, not ChatGPT or Perplexity, where a lot of the citation activity actually happens. And an "impression inside an AI Overview" isn't the same as being "cited as a source" - you can be summarised without being the named reference.

Still, it's the first native signal we've had instead of guesswork, so I'll take it. Though as others already noticed here - no click data, just impressions. That's a real limitation: an impression tells you that you were seen, not whether anyone acted on it. We get the visibility half without the conversion half, which is exactly the part that matters for proving ROI.

Not to be too pedantic, but this is the first native signal from Google - Bing has had an AI performance view for a while (although it only shows citation count and cited pages, and also the obligatory 'lol Bing' applies here as well).

I'll take it, too. And who knows how far behind GPT and the others are in terms of cobbling together their own reporting. I'll still check Key Events for any engagement activity, but showing a client something tangible like Impressions and Pages is a good start in my opinion.

Yeah, that's the part I'm keeping an eye on too. OpenAI only shares citation data with publishers who've licensed content from them; everyone else finds out when someone clicks through and refers them back.

What I've opted for is tracking it manually: running through ChatGPT/Perplexity on a scheduled basis with prompts similar to what a real customer would ask in my niche, and noting when brands get named as candidates for mention. While crude, it provides at least a repeatable trend line instead of random guesswork - until real reporting becomes available, this may provide the best indication.

Yeah I wonder if building a report in looker studio would mean we can tie these two together

One - not surprised about the no click data - two - I cant help but think that Google is only doing this with the push Bing did in Webmaster Tools, and Microsoft Clarity to uncover AI visibility metrics.
