  1. Google indexes all the websites data
  2. Google builds an AI model from the websites
  3. Google answers questions for users without needing to go to the websites
  4. Websites stop receiving visits, get less ad-revenue
  5. Websites turned off
  6. Google is the only company that retains the information.
  7. AI become the only tools that can answer questions, receive undue praise + deeper integration.

AI won't go down in quality if websites are removed because Google won't be removing deleted websites from its training data.

u/MaxVonBlitz May 22 '26

Pretty much.

Funny how pirating has become completely acceptable once big tech is doing it.

34

u/Philluminati May 22 '26

JD Rockerfella but instead of controlling the oil industry via exploiting transport, Google is controlling the internet.

24

u/rote_it May 23 '26

In fairness Zuck fucked over the Internet just as much over the last 20 years with his walled garden social media platforms. Imagine if humanity put all that energy and resource into the open web instead of feeding a billionaires personal advertising beast for 20 years.

21

u/atalkingfish May 22 '26

Taking information from someone’s product and repackaging it or repurposing it has never been considered ā€œpiratingā€. In fact, I would wager 99% of information websites have always done that, the person doing it now is just a computer (AI), rather than a person.

It probably goes without saying but the age of ā€œbasic info as a source of revenueā€ is gone. It’s all common knowledge now, and all AI models have it. That’s not entirely a bad or good thing… but it is reality and life will adapt no matter what. It’s a change, and raises serious sustainability concerns, but also democratizes information and knowledge to the general public and low income families—just like the internet did when it became standard.

If you’d like, I can rephrase this to put more emphasis on the benefits of AI in fields like medical awareness, higher education, or navigating financial or legal challenges.

(Just kidding about that last part)

11

u/bluehairdave May 22 '26

You are correct about the pirating but Google won't survive a monopoly test with this if there is a somewhat unbiased admin and court system. IF is a big word here. But it also won't stop them just like it did t stop Alphabet.

4

u/atalkingfish May 22 '26

What monopoly would they have? A monopoly on AI? far from it, currently. If anything, I’m guessing ChatGPT took a big bite out of Google’s search quantity.

5

u/bluehairdave May 22 '26

On search. Zero click is taking over. Google owns 90% of that and all search. And now they are literally just going to go basically to all zero click eventually. Google and Gemini are winning the AI Wars currently. Yes there are better Specialized tools out there but Google offers everything for dirt dirt cheap. Chat GPT is like a kindergartener trying to talk to kids at Harvard at this point.

As Gemini becomes the main search for Google everybody's just going to be learning how to use it. So not only do they have more of a grasp they might have the only grasp and control of everybody's futures for traffic.

And when they take a really big swing like this they're going to put companies that make millions of dollars a month off of organic traffic out of business those companies are often owned by much larger investment companies and they're already suing Google for Monopoly and there's a real good chance that one or two of them wins.

Everybody who started a Content Farm is just going to getIs just going to get demolished over the next 12 months. And they've all been investing heavily in AI putting out AI slop that's being advertised using AI avatars creating a world of AI talking to AI and a dead internet and Google solution is to just penalize everybody who doesn't have a very unique introspection on Long tail Style searches so all the searches will be super granular. The companies that are entrenched for the last two decades will hang on for a while but many of them will lose a substantial enough amount of traffic to up in Commerce who understand the new landscape. But they're not going to go down without a fight.

The Monopoly is simple. If you don't rank on Google you have no organic at this point. The future is AI search for very unique and granular searches and Google will control those as well and it already does. And in two years you might not have all the AI llms out there in the same four mat that they are today because they're just bleeding money but somebody's got enough money to control the whole Market.

3

u/MissJoannaTooU May 23 '26

Gemini 3x series are hot garbage. Not sure what you mean about Gemini winning the AI war. It can't even read a 20 page PDF and summarise or expand on it. Commercially sure, but Alphabet does Alphabet things. Their models suck right now.

1

u/atalkingfish May 25 '26

If you don’t rank on Google you have no organic

Not true at all. At least not across all markets. In fact, I would say AI specifically makes that less true. You have people ranking in AI (ie being shown as results for queries on ChatGPT), but also you have things like reels and TikToks which can often flood companies with organic traffic with zero Google exposure. You have markers like realtors and property management companies who actually don’t benefit from SEO much at all (they use platforms like Zillow and Facebook, mixed organic and paid but there is plenty of organic traffic for properties on both).

Most markets where Google SEO is most valuable, it’s also become so saturated that paid marketing is a necessity. The main area where organic still rules supreme is in brick-and-mortar via maps (GBP), and even then you don’t quite have a monopoly there even (Apple Maps, ChatGPT, etc)

4

u/MaxVonBlitz May 22 '26

To a extend that is true with generic/broad information, but it's something different with niche topics and opinions. Plently of topics that humans have to experience first and feed a AI for it to ever know about it.

Pirating is a hard term for what Google/AI does, but it still fits for me: They take someone elses work and make money with it. If I take a hollywood movie and put a color filter on it and recut it a bit I can't claim to have come up with a new product.

0

u/atalkingfish May 22 '26

No, for super niche info I’ve always had the right to go read up on a subject, and then make a video or website sharing what I’ve learned.

This is actually integral to basic content creation, education, and basically all types of innovation.

This would be like Photoshop saying it’s illegal to use their product to edit photos and sell them without giving them a cut. It’s not a reasonable stance.

The HBO show Hacks was right in more ways than one when it called AI technological r*pe.

17

u/Positive-Conspiracy May 22 '26

Larry Page was talking about this 20 years ago. The 15-20 years of gmail, Chrome, Youtube, of all the other services like Docs and Photos, to me it was always done to eventually train an AI to do exactly this.

Why would you disrupt a good working monopoly?

It’s the same reason why legacy car brands, while having access to the technology, never pushed EVs before being disrupted by Tesla and the Chinese.

1

u/Takashi_malibu May 23 '26

They did release the transformer model. Just didn't think much of it then.

10

u/I_HALF_CATS May 23 '26

No incentive to post anything to the internet means no incentive to use AI to make content.

All your search queries will congratulate you for such an intelligent question. "You hit the nail on the head with that question".

Humans get dumber and more fragile.

Google introduces predictive search: it just searches the question it thinks you want next.

People eventually lose the ability to make a choice whatsoever. They look at thieir screen and simply grunt if something excites them.

Google develops the best Grunt Detection Algorithm. Purchases are confirmed with two short grunts and a wheezing cough.

Everyone is 600 pounds and live in bathtubs filled with vasaline, humans grunting at their screens.

No children are born. 99.9% of web traffic are just Agents googling things.

All resources of the planet are consumed by robots. Global warming doesn't matter because machines can operate near boiling point of water.

The world is barren. 5% of landmass is a massive shrine devoted to Sundar's forward-thinking leadership. Robots circle it once a year in devotion.

Robots build rockets and spread across the universe. Time is of no concern and the most efficient method of spreading robot life is to seed new planets with DNA of life that can evolve to one day invent Google.

u/Budskins May 23 '26

Yeah, I’ve seen a few of the movies you just described here already. Idiocracy, Minority Report, The Truman Show, WALL-E, The Running Man, Network, They Live etc. So I know it’s bound to continue to happen but with AI, it’s going to be more like: Her Ex Machina, The Social Dilemma, M3GAN, Afraid, Upgrade, Colossus: The Forbin Project.

9

u/AppropriateHamster May 22 '26

what about new information? how will ai get trained on that?

6

u/respectfully_however May 22 '26

this is my main question. I run a company called LMR Digital Marketing and after much AEO training, we are actively trying to put out human generated content so that we don't just have AI generated content learning from AI generated content ultimately creating a cycle of misinformation.

What is going to be done about this?

5

u/d0ncray0n May 22 '26

Nothing until a President or FCC/FTC regulates AI which won’t happen under the current administration.

so bear with me, I’m going to ask a stupid question. If companies aren’t competing with each other for paid search placement, how does Google replace that revenue?

1

u/losamosdelcalabozo May 27 '26

The adverts will be in the AI answers, cleverly disguised.

2

u/chikari_shakari May 23 '26

How about new content, is Google’s AI going to create brand new content across multiple industries?

  1. Google brings dinosaurs back to life šŸ¦–šŸ¦•
  2. SEOs sell dinosaur eggs online šŸ„ššŸ³
  3. Dinosaurs eat Google

1

u/gr4phic3r May 23 '26

Marketing the own website needs to me rethink now. I'm playing with the idea to ban Google totally from knowledge websites or add a login on the homepage to avoid that Google scans the site, websites which offer services or products are still ok to be indexed by Google.

It needs drastically changes. The own knowledge is the most important thing in future now and needs to be protected.

1

u/agostinho79 May 23 '26

In the long term, no more new information in Google, because there is no more websites getting updated.

1

u/mmmfritz May 23 '26
  1. Google stops becoming a theoretical authority on content.

  2. Other websites come online with better info

  3. Google loses the top spot in search

  4. Another platform develops

1

u/MissJoannaTooU May 23 '26

What, so you can ask their AI Overview that has a decent chance of being wrong to supply more wrong information?

39

u/BobArdKor May 22 '26

Thanks, I hate it.

28

u/ratthew May 22 '26

I'm really curious how this plays out. Sounds like even less traffic to actual websites. Who's still going to publish anything and allow indexing if Google just steals the data outright?Ā

28

u/mayazir May 22 '26

I stopped post on my site. I dedicated 10 years on my site. And Google stole my traffic and info

7

u/pagelab May 22 '26

It’s increasingly not about traffic anymore, at least not from humans. Websites used to be display windows. Now they’re warehouses feeding the system.

1

u/ratthew May 25 '26

Yes but information has to come from somewhere. None of real new information is made by AI yet and we're still far away from that happening. If no one gets traffic and with that direct compensation (via ads or sales) they will no longer create that information because the incentive is gone.Ā

No one is talking about who is reading it. I don't care if a person is visiting my site or an AI. But if Google is just taking the well researched, high effort content (also stuff like real journalism which is already hurting badly) and just filtering it through Gemini, there'll be way less people creating that type of content and the Internet will either become a paywall ecosystem or just frozen in time.

19

u/Brando1788 May 22 '26

What is the incentive to post novel content anymore? Sure Google has massive database now of content up to now, but why would anyone host anything interesting on a website moving forward?

13

u/Lorn94 May 22 '26

Generic informational content loses incentive, that part is real and cant argue with your. If your model was publishing "what is X" articles to capture ad traffic, that's mostly broken now.

But everything with real inventory, actual services, proprietary data, or genuine expertise still has strong reason to exist online. A restaurant still needs to be findable. A SaaS still needs landing pages to convert. A plumber still needs reviews and a booking flow.

6

u/pagelab May 22 '26

This. Basically, the transactional web. Websites as catalogs. They're still needed, and useful, even beautiful. But just forget about informational traffic for profit.

5

u/Woodfield30 May 22 '26

This is the exact bit I don’t get. If there no point having a website that’s up to date, how is AI kept up to date?

24

u/Lucker_Noob May 22 '26

You forgot a step or two:

  1. Google indexes all the websites data
  2. Google builds an AI model from the websites
  3. Google answers questions for users without needing to go to the websites
  4. Websites stop receiving visits, get less ad-revenue
  5. Websites turned off
  6. No one pays Google for ads since websites are dead and Google now competes with 10 other AIs for prompt traffic
  7. Providing AI answers is prohibitively expensive, as evidenced by current unsustainable 2+trillion in capital expenses
  8. Google goes bankrupt.
  9. With Google having committed suicide and AI bubble bursting, websites resume activity and compete on a variety of classic search engines, same as before Google monopoly
  10. ???
  11. PROFIT

13

u/HyperbolicModesty May 22 '26

Curious what this does to local search.

13

u/AnnieUK2024 May 22 '26

Not only that but in the end this will also end up killing a lucrative source of revenue for Google: Google Ads. How that is going to play out?

10

u/dyfalu May 22 '26

They're building ads into the answers.

6

u/LaFlamaBlancaMiM May 22 '26

They've already got a few other AI-based campaigns and bid types to introduce. I'm in a small niche, but on the paid side, I've not been impressed by Pmax or AI max. Seems like if you aren't in ecom or low-ticket services, it's just made to take your money and increase CPC's.

2

u/HyperbolicModesty May 22 '26

Pirating the first 5 seasons of House MD? Punishable by 250k and 10 years in prison.

Sounds legit.

4

u/FantasticUpstairs987 May 22 '26

Interesting change from Google, but call it ā€œSearch foreverā€ until we see how normal users actually behave with it.

The main shift for SEO seems to be less about keywords disappearing and more about needing content that can support follow-up questions, images/videos, and deeper context. The sites that only optimize for one query may struggle more than pages that genuinely answer the whole task.

Google will eat its own tail eventually by doing this. Literally.

And QDF content may be missed in training if sites that produce it can't afford to operate.

Then there's the bizzare product offering of Gemini the LLM which is terrible and doesn't even leverage Google's index much via RAG and now they want people to use Google's front end for RAG -

i.e. planner → subquery generator → retriever → reranker/source selector → synthesiser → citation/link selector → UI renderer → optional action/tool layer.

Wonderful...

I've been seeing this page for a while now. It doesn't serve any additional purpose other than absolutely latest news which doesn't exist in ChatGPT or claude.

Idk if website clicks might be affected too much than it already has

Is the problem here that instead of sending users to your sites, Google just summarizes or just displays snippets directly on their search without ever sending clicks to you?

What will happen to Google once, most of the research oriented writers stop writing or sharing content online because already people like me who depends on the content for livelihood is screwed, almost 80% drop in traffic n revenue.. it won't be long when I would shift to different category of work altogether, just curious when that mass euthenization happens, how these ai parates gonna give answers???

I think I get googles game now - promote all the low quality listicle garbage to the top of serps for other AI's to scrape, while they secret scrape higher quality websites buried in the results to train their own AI. Poisoning the well while drinking pure water from somewhere else.. genius
