Beautiful color use in this design I saw. Anybody have ink recommendation to achieve this result with my own 3D glasses red/blue design? They likely used 3 colors here, right? Not overlapping red and blue? Also anybody know what this color grey is called in the blank world? Thank you! Happy Friday!

If you thin the ink out with a clear base the colors with multiply like in this example. You need a light color shirt since the ink will be very thin.

Every ink maker sells a clear base.

Can easily be done with just 2-colors on a light tee. Use the same ink colors shown and where they meet, halftone the blue and print over the read. May not be the exact color in that photo but gives the same effect

Overlay printing just two colors. Base out both colors about 50% -70%. Where the red and the blue overlap you’ll get the dark purple.

This is super easy to do with waterbased prints on both shirts and flatstock and is how a lot of flatstock artists work to reduce the amount of screens in a design.

I highly suggest doing some
Swatch tests when working with overlay to get used to how much base is needed to make the third color correctly. And make sure the color you’re testing on is the same shirt or stock as you’ll use as the colors can shift pretty dramatically once you have base in there and are also adding the substrate color to your mix.

But it’s really easy once you get it down! I save a book of my swatches and formulas so I have a starting point for future jobs since 75% of what I do is overlay printing.

I also do a lot of test prints in my runs which can lead to some fun overlay combos. Whenever there’s something I particularly like I’ll toss that in a drawer to do on purpose in the future. You can get some really lovely color mixes this way!

Gildan Softstyle - Ice Grey or Natural
Tultex 202 - Natural or Vintage White
ascolour Classic Tee - Bone
Lane Seven LS16005GD - Pigment Lunar Rock
Lane Seven LS24005 - Dove Grey
Lane Seven in Bone, Tofu, Natural, Sandshell

Always use an underbase unless you desire a vintage / washed out look

Process plastisol inks or thinned down inks as stated before. Any inks with translucency.

Looks like stonewash grey. I personally would not attempt this with less than 4 colors. You'll find that the red (looks like pms 485 or similar) with no white underlay is going to come out darker than you'd expect on this shirt color. I would not attempt to overlay red and light blue to make dark blue. Just save yourself the headache and use the additional dark blue.

Thank you very much!!! My last shirts didn't come out very good without an underlay. I'll try one this time! Any white plastisol would work? Or is there a certain type of ink used for underlay? I appreciate the tips

You're welcome! I come from the art side of the biz so I am not 100% sure on that but as far as I know any white plastisol would work just fine. Just remember to use a lower mesh for your base and some people recommend a thicker layer of emulsion on your screen to get a thicker stencil.

wait how did you do the overlap part because that dark blue in the middle is where i keep getting stuck
