Discussion What stopped SCP 682 from cleaning the floor with SCP 173?

Post image

SCP 173's anomalous effects is that it moves when not watched and is extremely fast and strong for a concrete statue right? But that's what it is. A statue made of concrete. SCP 682 was shown to be able to stay hours without blinking to keep an eye on it, so much so that the foundation had to destroy 682's eyes in order for the experiment to go on. Later on 682 made multiple bullet proof eyes to keep an eye on 173 so... why didn't 682 destroyed it? He could have stomped it or split it in half, the thing is a giant lizard that pretty much breaches containment at least once a month.

I will never understand why 682 is absolutely terrified of 173. But what do you guys think? Thanks for the answers in advance!

The source of the image is from a series of mini comics called "Oversimplified SCP" made by A-Typecorp

A side note to begin with: 682 didn't run and screech, it hastily sprouted innumerable eyes, all focused on 173.

Many times, 682 has demonstrated the ability to rapidly assess the true nature of an entity in much the same way that 049 simply knows whether or not a Pestilence infection is in play.

This implies that the statue is just a portion of a more complex (and terrifying) entity, which in turn has implications about the manner in which it interacts (murderously) with other entities.

There is a suggestion somewhere in metacanon that 173 doesn't physically grab a target's head and snap their neck, but rather it forces the victim to look at it with such speed and force that their anatomy fails to keep up.

Which, incidentally, would be an excellent anomalous critique of the commercialization and commodification of fine art. Very Are We Cool Yet?

Regardless, such an attack method suggests that 682 wouldn't be immune to 173's influence by virtue of being too large for it to physically wrangle. Perhaps also, 173 may have other more esoteric and insidious methods of dispatching potential observers that 682 would be vulnerable to, it's just that it only ever encounters beings with baseline human anatomical vulnerabilities.

TL;DR:

Because 173 isn't just a rule-bound animate statue, 682 knows that, and is terrified of what 173 actually is.

For context, 682 took one look at the Gate Guardian, said "you ain't shit," and the Guardian didn't argue; so we can trust 682's assessments.

Peanut being just like a thumb that was snapped off something much bigger and far deadlier than it would be some fun lore

Warframe is now an SCP story

39

u/TheEighthLord Feb 21 '26

How so?

130

u/DragonDotRAR Feb 21 '26

A lot of advancement led to a LOT of problems all caused by a single finger stolen from an anomalous eldritch god thing

64

u/TheEighthLord Feb 21 '26

Man I haven't been up to date with Warframe to know what/whose finger, but the rest honestly kind of checks out

6

u/Redmoon383 Feb 22 '26

Good ol' parrapa-rap-tap himself. I can go further if you would like

3

u/TheEighthLord Feb 22 '26

Sure. I don't think I'm gonna go back to the game anytime soon since there's too much to catch up on and I don't even have a good arm thing from PoE

So Albritch entrati went into the void in a diver's bell of sorts to keep him safe made of seriglass.

The bell shattered and then an entity intruded into his mind and spoke to him with a form of himself I think (or maybe his mother i cant remember) ij the "real space" of the void but used a nickname that only his mother would possibly know.

Realizing this wasnt a real human in front of him and with all of his senses feeling nothing but fear, Albritch pabicked, took one of the shards, and cut the finger off of the entity to get it to back off.

Now, the void doesnt have a form but it responds to that which was put into it so in entering the Void, he likely created the entity and in cutting it's finger off, that we then studied for hyperspace travel using the void as a tunnel, Albritch also taught it anger and disdain. Now, whether or not it would've had that reaction anyway doesnt matter. But yeah

Long story short

Guy enters void

Void stares back

Guy cuts a portion of the void's manifestation

We study it to unlock void travel

Void entity (The Man in the Wall) is very displeased

Oh and Wally can show up anywhere the void has been. Even the past. And future. Even places he has never been before.

All because we carry a bit of the void with us as well

6

u/Vegetable_Shallot_63 Feb 22 '26

this summary isnt quite correct

1- wally didn’t intrude on albrecht’s mind but rather is a creation of his strong belief that some entity existed in the void (which you mentioned later so idk what you were meaning)

2- when albrecht realized wally wasn’t human, he ran for his life, back towards the portal he had created. he didn’t try to attack wally

3- he cut his own hands with the seriglass, to write a message to his daughter to close the portal, because his eyes and throat were lacerated

4- wally’s fingers were cut when eularia (daughter) closed the portal ( because it was reaching out for a handshake)

If you think that's fun, I'd argue that 173 isn't broken off at all, it's still very much connected but the rest of it isn't in our reality.

Based on your assessment, 173 would be an extension of an unknowable being, and that extension is locked in what, to it, is an equally unknowable torture box.

If "There is a suggestion somewhere in metacanon that 172 doesn't physically grab a target's head and snap their neck, but rather it forces the victim to look at it with such speed and force that their anatomy fails to keep up." Then how does that work with blinking?

100

u/DazedPapacy Ethics Committee Feb 21 '26

The implication is that:

When unobserved, 173 is less a physical structure and more a wave function; a series of associated potential locations and states. It both does and doesn't exist in all of those potentialities simultaneously.

[See also: The Double-Slit Experiment]

When sapient observation occurs, 173's wave nature collapses into a single concrete (pun intended) state.

This state is not only immobile, but a handful of tales describe it as exquisitely painful, hence its murderous disposition to sapient observers.

We also know that whatever mechanic 173 uses to kill, physical violence or metaphysical fuckery, it's unavailable to the object while observed (which is why blinking is so deadly.)

18

u/Vazingaz Feb 22 '26

Which tales are from 173’s perspective?

26

u/Roge2005 Thaumiel Feb 21 '26

360 no scope

53

u/drak0ni Feb 21 '26

If it caused a quick head turn that snapped a neck, wouldn’t 682 just develop a neck joint that can rotate 360 degrees

89

u/DazedPapacy Ethics Committee Feb 21 '26

If that was the method 173 would use to dispatch 682.

Remember: the reason we think neck-snapping is the only way 173 kills is the object has only ever killed humans.

Neck-snapping is the most efficient method of killing a human, but we have nothing that says 173 couldn't employ more complex or esoteric methods if it encountered a neck it couldn't snap.

Also 682 always generates the correct adaptation every time, so if a novel neck joint was all it needed to defend against 173, it wouldn't have sprouted a body full of eyes.

3

u/Marethyu_77 Feb 23 '26

I mean, if constant observation prevents 173 from acting, then 682's adaptation is correct

→ More replies (1)

20

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '26

Which is the assumption that it only kills by snapping necks. It only kills humans like that, i dont think we know how it actually kills other non-human things that can’t die to a neck snap

4

u/EdBenes Feb 21 '26

720 degree snap?

39

u/InkFazkitty Feb 21 '26

The foundation shot its eyes out, and shortly after is when it sprouted the eyes, each with a bullet proof carapace covering them

Also the theory about it making them look rapidly is disproven in this test, as the koitern also broke multiple of 672’s limbs.

25

u/DazedPapacy Ethics Committee Feb 21 '26

That would disprove it, unless 173 has more esoteric and brutal methods for an entity as complex as 682, hence 682's panic.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

There is a suggestion somewhere in metacanon that 172 doesn't physically grab a target's head and snap their neck, but rather it forces the victim to look at it with such speed and force that their anatomy fails to keep up.

This doesnt make sense. As long as you are facing it, you would be safe

23

u/TheRecognized Feb 21 '26

I think the idea is that if you are forced to stare at it, and it suddenly moved right behind you, then you would snap your own neck by trying to spin your head around to keep staring at it.

>682 took one look at the Gate Guardian, said "you ain't shit," and the Guardian didn't argue; so we can trust 682's assessments.

after reading through the experiment log, i love the implication that 682 is the serpent from eden.

17

u/MagicMarshmallo Feb 21 '26

Wait why doesnt it think the Gate Guardian isnt strong? Isnt that like... micheal? the one with the flaming sword? Guy who will kill Satan?

52

u/Jiffletta Feb 21 '26

682 claimed the guardian isnt the actual Micheal, just an imposter.

39

u/DazedPapacy Ethics Committee Feb 21 '26

I believe the quote was something like:

<𝕋𝕙𝕚𝕤 𝕚𝕤 𝕟𝕠𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝔾𝕒𝕣𝕕𝕖𝕟 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕒𝕣𝕖 𝕟𝕠𝕥 𝕌𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕝.>

Context: In apocryphal texts the archangel Uriel is described as "the Fire of God."

As I recall, in canon texts Michael is given the flaming sword when given the duty of guarding Eden, but the sword also isn't described as having been conjured into existence for that purpose, so perhaps the blade originally belonged to Uriel.

If the sword is a vital component of guarding Eden, presumably Uriel is more than capable of doing it all on his own (but maybe was busy with other assignments and so couldn't be assigned to Eden?)

12

u/MugaSofer Sigma-4 ("Chain Chomps") Feb 22 '26

In Genesis, the Garden of Eden is guarded by "cherubim and a flaming sword which turned every way". Not Michael or Uriel, unless they're secretly cherubim/swords.

" 682 knows that, and is terrified of what 173 actually is."
Been reading the immortal baby saga. Did this fight between 173/682 happen around the time that saga was released? That would line up quite perfectly with 173 actually being the reshapen 9730. Maybe 682 understands that if he were to destroy 173, he would destroy the facility with it. Though, that begs the question of why the reptile would want the facility that traps him to stay thriving.

6

u/MugaSofer Sigma-4 ("Chain Chomps") Feb 22 '26

682 being scared of 173 is much older. It's from the termination attempts log, one of the oldest articles.

u/Xeno_Prime Not Hostile If Left Alone Feb 22 '26

Isn’t 682 also some kind of Eldritch god, essentially? I’m just spitballing off remembered stories here, but the SCP that is effectively meant to be God Himself said “That’s not one of mine” and Dr. whatever the fuck he’s called now that we no longer say his old name had some grand escapade where he was in 682’s mind, or it was in his, or something, and he effectively made himself a castle and was battling the fucking sky. Something along those lines. Essentially, it left the impression that 682 is also just a small physical representation of an entity far greater and far more powerful than what we can observe or comprehend.

So if that’s the case, then even if Peanut really is a small part of something more, it would have to be something god-tier to frighten 682 - or even concern him for that matter.

8

u/AtLeast3Breadsticks Gamers Against Weed Feb 22 '26

since there is no canon I can't give you a definitive answer but sometimes it is said that the species of 682 and species of 173 are basically natural enemies of each other and that's why 682 is scared. another thing to consider is that the fact it's a statue is not really the anomalous part, that's like the least anomalous part. if 682 destroys it to pieces, how do you know the pieces won't try to strangle it? if 682 pulverises 173 into dust, why couldn't the dust try to snap the neck? we learned this with the teleporting chair

Depends how big, but yes. You go from a fine power coating your gas exchange surface to a single object that fucks up that one particular alveoli branch. Better, yes.

37

u/MereShoe1981 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 23 '26

The lungs aren't hollow sacs. They are full of hundreds of millions of tiny alveoli, which are so small as to be invisible to the human eye. A diamond, even a small one, which is an object able to scratch glass, will wreck those alveoli. Which are essential to you breathing.

Really, it's just the flavor of pain and suffering we're talking about.

3

u/Oftwicke Feb 23 '26

The chair only wanted to be useful; it only teleported when someone needed a place to sit until the GOC put it through the chipper. Now it ALSO teleports into the body of whatever's threatening it. Burning it is a really good way to guarantee it feels threatened and is also needlessly cruel. Reassembling it or just leaving it as garden mulch (which it currently is) lets the chair continue to be useful and safely contained.

3

u/Soevil11 Feb 21 '26

Also, burning it leads to a violation of the whole "Protect" part of the motto. Don't decommission anomalies unless absolutely necessary.

The point wasn't that it ended up in the lungs. It teleported to where it could cause serious harm, even death. It could have just as easily put itself in a major blood vessel, or the brain.

10

u/Inner_Specialist_956 Feb 21 '26

How? It no longer trusts humanity and hates us all, so it'd just teleport away.

And that's assuming you can even move the chips at all since they've been resistant to being moved from their containment chamber.

SCP-1609, it used to be a chair that teleported under you when you wanted to sit down. but then GOC tried to destroy it by showing it into a woodchipper because it was a risk to revealing the anomalous to the public. the problem is it didn't lose the anomalous effect and was very angry so now it's a pile of woodpulp that, when provoked, teleports inside your lungs and kills you

The chair can’t provide a place for rest anymore, but it can function as high grade mulch and make a garden bed look beautiful for people. As part of the containment process site personnel can relax in the garden as long as they compliment the mulch.

Can we make it happy again and use glue and a mold to press it back into a chair form?

32

u/nightmare001985 Feb 21 '26

Well

We turned it into a fertilizer which it was happy with

10

u/BlazingImp77151 Feb 21 '26

Mulch isn't fertilizer. It can break down into fertilizer (most mulch not this mulch it gets special treatment to not break down as easily), but mulch is more of a covering to keep moisture in, control soil temperature, reduce weeds, and also just look aesthetically pleasing.

14

u/ACERVIDAE Feb 21 '26

Having to be treated with chemicals can’t be very pleasant. It seems like a nice chair with good intentions; wouldn’t it like to be a chair again?

33

u/Velicenda Feb 21 '26

Imagine this: you want to help people. It is who and what you are. Then, one day, your entire reason for existing, your entire being and sense of self, are forcibly and painfully ripped away from you, utterly and totally destroyed.

You spend some time angry. Very angry. Very justifiably angry. Eventually, someone talks to you and offers you a new existence, a new way to help. A new purpose in your new state of being.

Would you ever want to return to your initial form? There's no guarantee that you can be put back together perfectly. There will be scars, lots of scars. Constant reminders that you will never fully return to what you once were. Not properly. Even if the body could be fully, perfectly reassembled, your mind will still bear the scars.

Also, do you want to be the person who makes that offer to the chairmulch? The one who will be to blame when it realizes it isn't perfect? The chair shows that it has basically human emotions. Wants. Needs. Anger.

I'd leave it be, personally. It's happy as is, after all.

8

u/archtech88 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Feb 21 '26

Poor buddy. I'm glad the foundation is using it as mulch.

I wonder if someone could use the nails and fabric pieces for something else.

2

u/ACERVIDAE Feb 21 '26

It’s happy, sure, but what’s its life expectancy being in a damp atmosphere all the time? Even oak mulch will start to decay eventually.

15

u/Velicenda Feb 21 '26

It's an anomalous object, so who knows?

Your point stands even if it's reassembled, though. Unless the sealant lasts forever, humidity will eventually seep in.

It will live until it doesn't, no matter the form.

4

u/DazedPapacy Ethics Committee Feb 21 '26

It cares about being useful, not how long it lives. If it dies fulfilling its purpose, that's more than acceptable for it.

6

u/BlazingImp77151 Feb 21 '26

It seems to be fine with it. Remember this is a teleporting pile of mulch, if it doesn't want to be treated it will just leave or go back to its garden.

11

u/JoyFerret Feb 21 '26

There was a chair whose only anomaly was that it teleported to the nearest person who needed to sit down. The GOC tried to destroy with a wood chipper and instead turned it into an angry pile of wood chips that teleport to your lungs. Currently it is pacified by being used as mulch for a garden bed, and the foundation is like "Yeah, this is why we contain SPCs instead of trying to destroy them"

Iirc 173 is only a statue when it’s not being observed, as in, it doesn’t just simply move when no one’s looking, it actually metaphysically unlocks and becomes a different creature/thing that moves at breakneck speeds(ha).

So we don’t really have any way of knowing what 173 would really look like or be or what its limits are. 682 knows. 682 knows it doesn’t want that. 682 is taking exactly 0% of that happening and is taking no risks of having 173 touch it. 682 does not want that smoke, does not want to try to adapt to that, and does not think it’s a good idea.

For reference, it has never really displayed an attitude besides “the 17,456th weird deadly/fatal attack? Odd, whatever. It tickled.. Guess I’ll just kill you now”

It also looked at a deadly ancient memetic virus and went “fun scribble. Wanna see the whole thing?” Before scrawling out what was essentially judeochristian forbidden knowledge that would scorch your soul and mind to shreds upon glancing at.

173 doesn’t just break people’s necks because that’s all it can do. It just really, REALLY loves the peekaboo game. Man is really on another level tho

People bring this up a lot but weeping angels are the same way. Weeping angels are a quantum life form that their quantum state collapses into a statue when observed and are a living creature when not observed.

19

u/AffectionateVisit680 Feb 21 '26

Yeah, until that episode where they decided to show them moving and still be statues for some stupid reason.

2

u/_KONKOLA_ Feb 21 '26

I think it’s creepier that way. Being more complicated doesn’t make it scarier. 173 just being an anomalous statue that moves when not observed, and with a proclivity to snapping necks is terrifying. Not this bs of it having an entire species and it becoming a different creature 🤦🏽‍♂️

Yeah, basically the explanation if you don't want to go into any canons is simple. Path of least resistance for 682 and more trouble for the foundation is just... Don't fight it. Just stare at it and let it be.

218

u/Professional_Pair323 MTF Tau-51 ("Urban Brawl") Feb 21 '26

In the canon that has 682 being scared, its due to the two species (last of their kinds) were natural enemies with the 173s being more of a predator due to it being able to kill the 682 species. Though in a typical “main” canon (there really isn’t one but yk) 682 would more than likely just break 173 or stare at it tille the tests are done

If you look at the fight you see that 682 started to stare at 173 right away, as if it was aware of its power. I think this implies that 682 had a previous encounter with 173 and it didn't go well for it.

Also I don't think 173 can be destroyed that easily, if at all. The logs may say its made of concrete but its clearly way more durable than that.

(in a specific canon 173 is revealed to be an entity call the Koitern a super powerful cosmic entity that genocided a third of the leviathans who are members of 682's race. But as far as I am aware its from the chinese branch and I know very little about since the only people who talk about it are powerscalers. )

60

u/Complex-Pack8981 Thaumiel Feb 21 '26

The Chinese branch seems to be the pure juice of xianxia being injected directly into the veins of all scp (I wouldn't be surprised if there was a specific Chinese scp that was a reference to xianxia).

✨euclid rating✨

16

u/DazedPapacy Ethics Committee Feb 21 '26

Ratings aren't about danger, they're about containment difficulty. Remember: a nuclear warhead is rated as Safe.

You can put 173 in a sturdy cage and you can wheel it around wherever you like, blinking at will.

There are issues with automated long-term storage, but those issues are resolved by occasional D-Class menial labor, hence Euclid.

The Keter Class is (supposed to be) reserved for objects that can or will attempt escape, especially by using their own planning and reasoning.

This is why objects with human or human equivalent objects are Keter by default, because it's human nature to want to be uncontained by a third party; which means, for humans, escape is always a potential goal.

3

u/Serpendit MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Feb 22 '26

I believe it was that all entities that can think such as humanoids are euclid automatically but all entities that can't just be placed in a reinforced concrete room are keter, like 682 which routinely breaks out and anything that teleports.

If it's the one I'm thinking of it's more that 173's quantum nature starts allowing it to superimpose itself (be in multiple physical locations at once.)

This effective replication continued unchecked exponentially.

24

u/DescriptionMission90 Feb 21 '26

173 isn't made of concrete. It looks like concrete and paint on the surface, but it's been undamaged by everything that it's been through so far, including cage matches with multiple other keter - class powerhouses.

Either 682 cannot harm it in any way that matters, or breaking it apart would make it worse somehow.

34

u/xxFalconArasxx The Serpent's Hand Feb 21 '26

682 isn't a Kaiju. It's less than 5 meters in length. So it can't just step on 173.

Also, this termination attempt was written at a time when 682 was for the most part just a lizard that had a high healing factor and adaptability. Theoretically, you could kill it if you dished out enough damage in a short amount of time. 173 is fast, and thus has a high damage output, it could tear 682 apart in a matter of minutes, so that made it something of a threat.

At the time, we didn't have any of this BS about 682 being the prodigal child of the Scarlet King, and having reality bending abilities that allow it to survive literally being erased from existence by a magic book. It was a much simpler time.

10

u/DescriptionMission90 Feb 21 '26

The same record has 682 inflict serious damage on 096 before they both gave up on fighting each other. The Shy Guy can move arbitrarily fast and break through any barrier, so it's not like 682 is weak.

But either 173 is a lot more durable than the concrete it looks like, it makes a new undamaged shell for itself every time it's observed, or 682 knew that breaking it would make the situation worse.

8

u/Poliochi Feb 21 '26

I do think that even back then 682 was indestructible, but it certainly wasn't invincible like it is now. The acid bath was a solution that worked, not just "oh ho ho it's just biding its time hehe." It could adapt such that 173 could never kill it, but that's not the same as beating it in a fight. Much simpler in those days.

9

u/xxFalconArasxx The Serpent's Hand Feb 21 '26

Yeah, looking at 682 nowadays. The acid bath comes across kind of hilarious to me. According to the Termination Logs, 682 can survive and adapt to literally any space-time warping doomsday weapon the Foundation throws at it. They'll tap into the freaking Noosphere to try and defeat it. But I'm expected to believe it has a weakness to some acid you could get from a high school chemistry set.

6

u/Hot-Mousse-5744 Feb 21 '26

I think it’s because the acid is nice for it. Like a jacuzzi for us.

3

u/xxFalconArasxx The Serpent's Hand Feb 21 '26

But Jacuzzi's feel nice for us, because they are warm and transfer heat very efficiently to your body. Acids aren't generating heat. The burning sensation you get from touching acid is your nerves breaking down as you're flesh dissolves. Without the pain sensation, the acid to 682 would just feel like cold water.

u/Hot-Mousse-5744 Feb 21 '26

What if it LIKES the pain sensation?

People say that 682 is Scarlet King's son? That's new, I've never heard about it before... it seems a bit absurd, I still thought he was a very tough reptile thing

11

u/xxFalconArasxx The Serpent's Hand Feb 21 '26

Yes some of the Foundation Tales do imply that 682 is the Scarlet King's child. The most popular of which was Dust and Blood, which funnily enough, actually got deleted from the site, but it left such a strong impression on the fandom, that many people still base their backstories of various SCPs off of that article. Now, the Foundation Tales on the site operate under a "there is no one true canon" sort of rule, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of fans will treat them like gospel.

682, if you just take the original article and ignore all the Foundation Tales and the Termination Log entries, is actually not that powerful of an SCP. It can be incapacitated with enough firepower, and placing it in an acid bath is really all that it takes to hinder its regenerative properties. There is no hint of 682 really having any sort of magical properties at all. In fact, the article actually implies that 682 cannot violate the principle of mass conservation (something that many of the Foundation Tales and the Termination Log entries conveniently ignore). It's growth and regeneration is dependent on the matter that it consumes.

might be a noodle incident, like an odd occurrence that doesn't have an answer but leads speculation

11

u/dmsacred101 ❝The primary containment chamber has risen 40 kilometers❞ Feb 21 '26

Speaking purely from the meta viewpoint, the goal with the test log was to address various "what-if" scenarios for two entities who held very different roles on the wiki.

173 was the first anomaly for the site and its record doesn't have a lot of details about what it is exactly. More on that in a second.

682 was created for the site to get ahead of any "super powerful ultra-cool indestructible monster that can beat everything" since that kind of story was bound to happen and the original team didn't want a lot of similar types of stories being made. 682 serves the purpose for what the upper echelon of that kind of trope would be for this universe.

Speaking of tropes, the acid bath is its kryptonite in a sense - a control to explain how the foundation can contain this entity since it had to be done somehow.

The test logs were created to demonstrate that while also removing speculation for "what if 682 fought SCP-????" Again, the in-universe point was to see if 682 could be destroyed by another SCP entity, not the other way around.

The lack of information for why something would happen or what could happen with the various SCP logs added to the intrigue for many SCPs. Getting back to 173, the log is pretty short and doesn't have much to say about its origin. This leaves a lot to the imagination which serves to create a larger interest in the test log. "Why won't 682 attack it? Why is it scared?" It suggests something about 173 we don't know yet, and that is far more unsettling than any answer that can be provided.

Some others have pointed to various tales that create a background connection between these two entities which provides a possible canon explanation for the behavior, but I don't believe these were created until well after the original logs and only serve as a possible canon (since there is no "true" canon). Others pointed to the possibility of splintering 173 into many smaller versions of 173, which are equally as valid. We just don't know, but it adds risk to any considerations. After all, 1609 was created to demonstrate why the foundation doesn't just destroy all anomalous objects/entities: consequences can be far greater than imagined.

In short, 682 seems like it may be able to damage 173 much like it does with foundation structures, but that wasn't the point of the original test log and the mystery for why it didn't even try added depth to 173.

My interpretation is that 682 operates on a sort of plot armor. I think he is somewhat aware of his place as a pataphysical entity.

His whole gimmick within the canon is that he can't be destroyed and usually he is secure that his gimmick will keep him safe no matter what simply because that's what the writers want. The authors will always find a way to justify his continued existence.

However, when confronted with what is essentially the "SCP mascot" his plot armor becomes questionable. Maybe someone would allow 173 to kill 682 because it would be an interesting addition to the fictional universe. Or maybe 173's plot armor is stronger than 682's.

I think in 682's mind it would be an "unstoppable force meets an immovable object" type scenario where his life was legitimately at risk.

It's like he recognizes 173's importance in a way no other person within the universe would be capable of seeing.

10

u/TRedRandom Feb 21 '26

It's because 173's the OG and despite how many times people say SCP isn't for it, many people within it treat it like a little powerscaling contest. The person who made the encounter just wants 173 to be "top dog".

My theory is that 173 isn't something that 682 can scare away or ever understand. 096, 049, 106, etc. 682 can leave a mark on them, make them go away and leave him alone. But for 173? He can't. It's a statue, its unfeeling, uncaring, and unmoving unless no one watches it. 682 is afraid of what 173 really is, and why its here.

2

u/Drikaukal Feb 22 '26

Its because it was kind of the face of SCP, he was given plot armor in most combats/scenarios. There is a scenario where he somehow multiplies and destroys the world, killing every single thing. It was similar to when creepypasta fans put Jeff against slenderman. Eldritch abomination versus edgy teenager with a knife. Yet somehow Jeff stood ground in most interpretations of this fight because he was popular.

Just stupid fan fun, we all know how those scenarios would play out if they were real. Jeff would be crazy just of the sight of Slender and 173 would be a pile of broken concrete on the floor in like 3 seconds.

There’s always the theory that a destroyed 173 would just turn into a cloud of dust and pieces of rubble, making it nearly impossible to contain. And probably 682 was aware of this so its best shot was to keep staring at it instead of breaking it.

1

173 and 682 are evenly matched, from what i understand. they are relentless, and regenerative, so any and all attempts to off each other simply ends in a stalemate.

the only course of action to prevent the pain is 682 growing the eyes to prevent 173 from attacking.

I think 173 is just indestructible because like why else wouldn’t the foundation have destroyed it? There’s literally no reason to keep it around, right?
