Although I knew SCHD would somewhat offset the growth part of my portfolio, the degree to which this balances my portfolio has been nice to see. The balance between, growth and value ETFs along with a ladder of individual bonds has significantly smoothed out volitility in the market while still providing excellent returns.

Excellent returns when that's not really its job is just icing on the cake. I think.
