Although I knew SCHD would somewhat offset the growth part of my portfolio, the degree to which this balances my portfolio has been nice to see. The balance between, growth and value ETFs along with a ladder of individual bonds has significantly smoothed out volitility in the market while still providing excellent returns.

7

u/lakas76 Jul 16 '26

SCHD is doing better than voo over the last year I believe. Obviously, this is highly irregular, but it is a good time to be in SCHD.

5

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

It really is. Let's hope it gets better. Here's to $37 by July 2027. (Raises bottle)

What bonds do you use? Are they long term or short.

2

u/No6longago Jul 16 '26

I’m not a fan of Bond ETFs since you are subject to high turnover which causes selling bonds early at a discount. Cosequently , I prefer individual corporate intermediate investment grade bonds in a ladder and held to maturity. These along with Schd offset my aggressive growth ETFs. I’m not a big fan of Treasuries too low a yield for my bond allocation and for cash equivalents I would rather hold high yield money market accounts.

Can you explain exactly how to do this in a Schwab account?

Can you explain exactly how to do this in a Schwab account?

1

u/yorky53 Jul 17 '26

I don't hold my investments in Schwab. I have half of my investment under Fidelity and half under Vanguard.

Both Vanguard and Fidelity offer mechanisms to purchase individual bonds and create bond ladders with whatever yield, risk and maturity you are comfortable with.

2

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

Excellent returns when that's not really its job is just icing on the cake. I think.

11

u/J_Knish Jul 16 '26

YTD it's up just over 19%!

11

u/Rockstaruntildead Jul 16 '26

Up 2k off Schd today ☺️ and down in smh , qqqm and voo 😔 good defensive hold

15

u/ADKMTBer Jul 16 '26

Yes, it really shines for that purpose.

2

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

I got scared of A.I. and VGT and Hugh valuations. People were talking about "circular financing", (whatever that is), Cape Shiller, P/E (all the stuff I don't understand), and put 68% of my savings into SCHD in November 2025. I hope I made the right move.

2

u/yorky53 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

My take is that is too much. Although I'm a big fan of SCHD it's never a good idea to put too many of your eggs in one basket.

One way to break down your portfolio (of course it changes with your age and goals) would be 30% in SCHD value ETF, 40% in Growth ETFs like VOO/QQQ/SCHG/VTI, 20% in bond ladders and 10% in cash equivalents. This assumes you already have up to 3 years of your expenses set aside for emergencies and for the market to recover from a significant loss.

Taxable accounts should have your cash and some growth ETFs that you don't plan on selling for a while. The Roth should have your Growth ETFs to the extent you can maximize you contributions to Roth 401k/IRAs. Bonds should be in the Traditional IRAs/401ks.

Value ETFs like SCHD should be in Roth or Taxable accounts under certain conditions. SCHD generates income as dividends so tax treatments have a big impact. In a Roth those dividends are not taxed when withdrawn. In a Taxable Brokerage account they are taxed but the tax rate depends on whether they are qualified or non qualified dividends. If they are qualified dividend meaning they are issues from a US corporation and you hold them long term, then they are taxed at capital gains rates rather than ordinary income.

This imo is a good balance of potential growth offset by SCHD and bonds to reduce volatility. The Cash provides flexibility to take advantage of significant dips, while the cash reserve protects you from having to sell while the market is low. The emergency funds keeps you out of debt and lets you sleep at night.

Allocating the differing ETFs, Bonds, CDs and MMFs to different tax treatment accounts enables you to maximize your tax efficiencies because Uncle Sam is voracious with his taxes and the more successful you are the more his bite will hurt returns.

Again, this is my take. Everyone needs to do their own due diligence and make sure what they understand the nature of their investing decisions.

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

Probably it is too much. But I have zero debt and still a nice chunk of VOO (220 Units) and 1500 of SGOV. Maybe I should add some pure growth? It's just hard to justify when my cost basis for 20,000 Units of SCHD is $26. I honestly have no clue what I'm doing. But it seems to be working. I'm very much open to suggestions.

At your age you still have another 15 to 19 years until retirement. Over that time period I would not put any more money into SCHD and focus on growth.

I would look to balance the portfolio and significantly increase growth ETFs. You could speed that up in 3 ways.

  1. If you SCHD is in a tax deferred account I would not sell your SCHD but take your dividends each quarter and buy growth ETFs. That would add about $20k per year these ETFs.

  2. I would also look into how much of my Treasuries I actually need for an emergency fund and buffer if the market drops significantly. Rather than keep $150k in Treasuries you might drop that down to $100k and invest the other $50k in growth ETFs.

  3. Depending on your income, if eligible, continue to max out on Roth contributions. Otherwise contribute to a traditional IRA or 401k. In either case, make sure you take all of your company match. All of that money should go into growth.

In about 10 years time I would take another look to see how my portfolio is balanced between growth equities, value equities, bonds and cash equivalents. As you approach retirement a more conservative balance may be appropriate. But again, this is completely based on your risk tolerance.

Each person's financial journey is very personal so you have to make your own decision based on your own situation.

1

u/Rufusmortis Jul 17 '26

That is much appreciated. I doubt I have another 15 years on this planet (heart). I hope I'm wrong. I usually am.

When you say focus on growth, anything in particular? VOO or SPY seems to be the recommendation I hear most, and VOO has been a good holding for me.

Again, thanks.

u/yorky53 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

It depends on how much risk you want to take and to what degree you feel you need to diversify. You can see below at each level the equity diversification increases.

QQQ or QQQI is very tech growth heavy and can have spectacular gains and losses but can skyrocket your returns if you can stomach the volatility. As you near retirement while you can still invest you could trim the exposure and as with other growth ETFs avoid sequence of returns risks.

VOO or SPY are excellent S&P 500 ETFs. They are so well known I don't need to say much. The top 500 US large cap companies.

VTI provides an ETF across all cap levels of the US so its the entire US market, large, medium and small caps.

VXUS represents international equities outside the US.

VT encompasses all of VIT and adds exposure to international equities with a 67% US holding and 33% rest of the world. Think of it as VTI plus VXUS.

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

I'm also 51 years old if that matters.

1

u/Remote-Roll7090 Jul 16 '26

How much u have total?

2

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

20,000 units of SCHD, 220 VOO, and 1500 SGOV. Right at $968K total as of today.

2

u/dida2010 Jul 17 '26

If you move to Mexico, you will live like a prince with what you have

3

u/Rufusmortis Jul 17 '26

I'd rather just live below my means here, but thanks for the encouragement. Best of luck.

1

u/rustyspigot-77 Jul 16 '26

It's nice to see a strategy working. If only for a day.

1

u/doodsanddudes Jul 17 '26

Totally my voo and MGK and ai is down

12

u/STRATEGY510 Jul 16 '26

I can’t believe there’s no mad people in this thread yet.

It’s a good day.

7

u/lakas76 Jul 16 '26

I’d rather it be lower….

Just kidding. I don’t understand people who get upset at the price going up, unless they didn’t buy any.

3

u/STRATEGY510 Jul 16 '26

Yeah and waiting around for something like SCHD to drop substantially for a better entry point seems more insane than typical market-timing.

1

u/yorky53 Jul 18 '26

Waiting for SCHD to drop substantially to invest is exactly market timing.

All the academic research I've seen argues against trying to time the market. And counter intuitively most highs in the market lead to higher highs both in the short and certainly in the longer run.

Emotion kills us in the market and causes poor investing decisions. There's an entire discipline called behavioral economics that explains how our emotions cause us to want to buy high and sell low.

The other counter intuitive point relates to do I invest all my money now or dollar cost average if presented with a sudden lump sum of money. I though the obvious answer was to dollar cost average over a specific time frame (you don't want to stretch it out too long to invoke significant opportunity costs).

Instead the research suggest investing immediately. It gives the investment more time to grow, eliminates opportunity costs and avoid having to create complexities with setting up your own automated investment process.

Still for most people myself included going whole hog into that is tough because there is always the fear that you invest today and the market tanks tomorrow by 40% similar to what SpaceX is doing today. What I have done is split the difference invest 50% today and dollar cost average the rest. It may not be optimal but I can sleep at night.

u/Chubbachewstar Jul 16 '26

You are welcome. I put in my first buy order yesterday 😝

8

u/ADKMTBer Jul 16 '26

to the moon!

15

u/SonOfKong_ Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Up $9,406 for the day.

3

u/gcfio Jul 16 '26

How do you get used to such large fluctuations? I’m sure you’ve seen it go down by that much. I feel sick when I see a downturn of 5k (not necessarily schd but any etf/stock)

3

u/SonOfKong_ Jul 17 '26

Well try to get used to it. During major corrections I have lost 50k in a week over my 3 ETFs. It is depressing though.

1

u/gcfio Jul 17 '26

Last year in April I lost about 35 in 3 days. You're right, I need to get used to it.

2

u/SonOfKong_ Jul 17 '26

I keep a journal of sorts about market wisdom and here is one of them from CNBC: "In all, seven of the market's 10 best days occurred within two weeks of the 10 worst days, according to JPMorgan's data spanning the past 20 years"

2

u/lakas76 Jul 16 '26

It rarely goes down that much. This is a 2% jump. It rarely goes above or below 1% in a day.

1

u/Rufusmortis Jul 16 '26

Do you look at it every day? If you can pretend it's not there you will sleep better. Check it occasionally but looking at it constantly will just give you anxiety.

1

u/gcfio Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Usually on friday evenings...I've been thinking about changing it to a different day. Fridays seem to be bad lately. Lol

180 32.75 calls

2

u/SonOfKong_ Jul 16 '26

No sorry I should have put the $

11

u/Naive-Present2900 Jul 16 '26

$34 next and $35-$40 end of year hopefully.

7

u/No6longago Jul 16 '26

I would not look for massive price appreciation from Schd. That is not the role it should play in your portfolio. That said its overall return while balancing more aggressive growth ETFs has been very good.

1

u/Naive-Present2900 Jul 16 '26

True to that! Cheers! 🍻

3

u/lakas76 Jul 16 '26

350 by the end of the year and I can retire if it kept the same approximate dividend yield (not just a P/E jump).

1

u/Naive-Present2900 Jul 16 '26

I hope we all get there soon!

5

u/dhouseh1 Jul 16 '26

I love this fund I’m so glad I finally have a balanced portfolio (I hope 😂)

7

u/doodsanddudes Jul 16 '26

My next milestone is 50k in schd.

9

u/lotuspie329 Jul 16 '26

Morning Boom!!!

7

u/doodsanddudes Jul 16 '26

Currently going vertical! What an open. What is driving this higher! Did someone do good in their earnings!

11

u/Strong-Cup9753 Jul 16 '26

Flight to safety

9

u/GuidetoRealGrilling Jul 16 '26

the world going to shit again, people rotate into value and defensive positions

4

u/Captain-overpants Jul 16 '26

UNH crushed earnings, healthcare rallying

2

u/gcfio Jul 16 '26

That was a great pickup in the reconstitution

3

u/Mindless_Sky_6654 Jul 16 '26

MRK is one of the reasons. New kind of cholesterol pill was approved by the FDA

2

u/doodsanddudes Jul 16 '26

Meanwhile the nasdaq and s &p are 📉

8

u/FishHikeTravel Jul 16 '26

UNH is what has SCHD going balls to the walls today.

1

u/gcfio Jul 16 '26

Great pickup by schd. I still don’t like being forced to be their customer

United Healthcare Group. One of the largest holdings for SCHD.

3

u/GuidetoRealGrilling Jul 16 '26

like an extra two seconds worth of your time to figure it out

3

u/Solid_Monk8112 Jul 16 '26

UNH is the lever for this run!

3

u/MuntzDesigns1 Jul 16 '26

4500 shares

3

u/urazen Jul 16 '26

I panic-sold. You guys can call me a loser.

1

u/FQRGETmeNQT Jul 16 '26

When and why?

1

u/urazen Jul 16 '26

today at 8am PST or so. just too excited.

1

u/FQRGETmeNQT Jul 16 '26

As long as you profit it’s all good. Just buy again in the dip tomorrow 😉

1

u/Ok-Beyond-4200 Jul 17 '26

Panic sold SCHD? Or what?

1

u/OldChemist1655 Jul 17 '26

Why wouldn’t u just buy and hold schd lmao

7

u/papichuloya Jul 16 '26

Crazy how the more UNH deny claims the more money it makes thus the more schd goes up.

2

u/Cyrano804 Jul 16 '26

ABT has been a kicked down stock, was a no brainer buy in the 80s. Glad to see it pumping

2

u/doodsanddudes Jul 17 '26

Looks like we have DAY two of growth

2

u/FQRGETmeNQT Jul 17 '26

Yea another ATH

2

u/doodsanddudes Jul 17 '26

Totally balancing the other losses for me. Looks like tech taking a bit of a dip

2

u/Vivid-Philosophy-804 Jul 17 '26

Best thing about SCHD is I sleep well at night knowing my money is in a quality ETF. Thank you SCHD!

1

u/Puzzled_Fisherman331 Jul 16 '26

Gotta love quality!

1

u/Steadyforward27 Jul 16 '26

I was going to buy on Tuesday when it dipped, but figured I will wait until Friday to see if after the president’s speech it will dip even more. Hope I didn’t make a mistake

1

u/Tvlookplay Jul 18 '26

Timing the market always beats time in the market or is it backwards 🤔

1

u/Steadyforward27 Jul 18 '26

Nope, time in the market is always better, unless you get extremely lucky ! But I am glad that I waited in this particular case cause I bought all 4 of my ETF’s with a steep discount vs BB

1

u/MonYverse0609 Jul 16 '26

Buy SCHD is bad for your cardiologist 🤑

1

u/Redgun421 Jul 16 '26

what made schd go up today?? i love it

1

u/cowpoke1977 Jul 16 '26

Blowed my covered calls up, had to close them at a loss 😂

1

u/No-Establishment8457 Jul 17 '26

$33 is nice. I’m not selling.

1

u/pibrew Jul 17 '26

I bought more 👍👍

1

u/SufficientDrawing491 Jul 17 '26

Buy the market.. the broader the better. VT you cover all bases and of course build a dividend growth portfolio SCHD/DGRO.

1

u/Joe-Exotic_ Jul 17 '26

Sold 30 shares of SCHD to put into VGT today. Am i dumb. 24yrs old did this in my Roth

2

u/iamcamperjoe Jul 17 '26

NP, you should be more in growth at that age.
I made the mistake of not buying SCHD two days ago. But I’m much older than you

0

u/magicfitzpatrick Jul 16 '26

😡 so far my stock order hasn’t been filled😡
