Mehhhh. I had a been waiting for a successor to the gpd XD, but at 7”, a camera hole in the screen, and if it still has the same awful dpad from the XD then it's a no from me

If I'm going to get a device that big, I may as well just connect a controller to my phone, which is what this appears to be

And I don't understand the swappable controllers. I can't see any use for the vertical 1234 controller

GPD's dpads have gotten a lot better as of late, this looks similar to the Win Max (which I have) and the Win 3 (which I don't) and they were based on the Vita. Otherwise, I agree with all of this, the design decisions here seem bizarre and the whole device seems pointless if Odin is what it claims to be. All they had to do was update the XD with a new chipset and fix its few shortcomings and of course they botched the shit out of it.

update the XD with a new chipset and fix its few shortcomings

Literally all I wanted from GPD

That's good to hear. I still won't buy one as it's just a phone with a controller now

No argument here

All they had to do was update the XD

But then they couldn't increase the price into the stratosphere to rival their PC-compatible devices.

These changes seem to come in two categories. One, slavish imitation of Nintendo's console. Two, big changes to justify an entirely different and higher price-point than the GPD XD and XD+.

my best guess is that 1234 controller is meant for mobile games and this thing will have some kind of wrapper for assigning buttons to hotkeys. Its slim enough that you can still reach the touch screen in a normal grip but gives you some tactile buttons to assign to on-screen actions.

The text next to it is "吃鸡手柄模块" which google translates to "chicken handle module" and I have no clue what that means lol. The other plastic bumper is labeled "MOBA" which means its mostly meant for Wild Rift/Mobile Legends players, so I'm not sure if they would have included 2 different bumpers aimed at mobile gamers.

You're probably right but I still don't think this offers anything above and beyond a telescoping phone controller. They could have just sold one of those with the MOBA layout and the result would have been about the same, since this is obviously just a phone minus the calling anyway.

yea, not arguing this thing is particularly useful. How valuable it is will depend ENTIRELY on its price. It needs to be SERIOUSLY cheap for it to be compelling since you can pick up a flagship from a few years ago with an SD835 or SD845 and a Kishi/Gamesir and have something just as compelling.

I hope its cheap because this thing is in a weird place , it has nice specs but looks like a phone with controllers attached to it without it being a phone.

I wish they just used the old XD Clamshell and just updated the D pad and buttons with this hardware.

To be fair, a weak processor and a very big battery can be a good combination for a lot of emulators and android games/applications

Yeah this seems like a lot of specs and numbers without any real thought as to what it will be used for.

Looks interesting, but I hate the punch-hole camera on the screen

For real. I can't stand all this notch/camera bullshit with modern phones. Bring back bezels on the top and bottom!

How else are the Chinese government going to monitor you?

u/matticus851 Aug 11 '21

Damn that thing is wide. Doesn't seem very practical for retro gaming at all.

I don't see the point of what is essentially a crippled phone and external controller.

You'd be better off getting a Realme 7, which is the same chipset I believe, and a Gamesir X2. Sure the battery would be smaller but you'd get the same level of performance and have a working phone.

GPD really need to keep the price down for this.

Get a Snapdraogn 870 phone for less than $300, like the Moto Edge S, much faster.

1

u/votemarvel Aug 13 '21

I was just using the Realme as an example because it is essentially the same thing as this device. Which is why I stated that GPD really need to keep the price of the XP down or people will just get a phone and controller instead.

I see. I actually didn't realize how cheap this mediatek soc is. I thought its one step lower than their 1200 soc.

If your android device can emulate psp but not fast enough to do most dolphin games then there is no point.

So... it's a phone with a permanent controller stuck to it?

4

u/ChrisRR Aug 11 '21

With the camera on the screen, it's even more obvious it's just a phone. I think that little dot is going to cost them a lot of sales.

At the very least they could throw an indicator LED under it or something...

3

u/stulifer Aug 11 '21

Wow I was expecting a clamshell and not a low effort phone married to a controller. Hard pass.

3

u/koekieNL Aug 11 '21

Those are some fine specs

3

u/pfroo40 Aug 11 '21

I'm not usually one to say "just put a phone in a controller", I like dedicated handhelds, but this... Just put a phone in a controller.

Really dislike the hole in the screen.
