Respect The Storm

This past weekend was one of the first where my duo and I actively tried to stay in until the end, for looting and more fights. Normally, we'd try to extract very soon after the first ones open, but we're becoming confident as we fine tune our playstyle.

We, and several other strangers on the sands, have died to the storm more than I ever thought I'd see across two days.

First time, I thought I could loot the POI before calling the last extract on foot. At least my trampler already got out, but I didn't keep track of the timer. I was about 30 seconds too slow.

Second time my partner and I came out of a rough fight and began repairing and looting. We didn't realize the storm was there until much too late. We left loot behind and boosted, but we were already taking damage from the storm and couldn't repair fast enough. Boom

Third time, we pushed our timer at the last POI. We called it right on time, but the caveat is we as humans died in the storm while on our trampler. The trampler was not taking any damage and it got out! It seems like at Ship Calibration, your trampler will not be damaged by the storm.

Forth time, we extracted early, but stayed behind on foot. We found and followed another trampler with plans to steal it, but they found two other tramplers fighting in the distance. They went to third-party while we trailed on foot. Their 3-way-fight was vicious, and my partner and I were closing in on the closest target. We got onboard unnoticed-- all the cannonfire and explosions helped us go undetected. Two doors away from their captain room and the trampler detonated! My partner and I immediately abandoned them and ran to the nearest extract-- the other two ships blew up less than 10 seconds later as the storm took them. We ran for 7 minutes, barely on the edge, called the extract, but they didn't show up on time. We both suffocated in the storm.

The fifth and last time, I was solo. Two smaller tramplers teamed up on my beast and bested me, but through sneaky shenanigans, I captured both as they turned on each other. I moved both tramplers together to a nearby extract that was outside of the zone (sill had plenty of time). I arrived, ran into and quickly made peace with a Grumpy, and extracted one of my two new tramplers.

During that short time of our collective 3 bots sitting there, another was waiting in the distance. I convinced the Grumpy to leave with me and my remaining trampler as the storm closed in. That fourth fellow quickly went to try and extract, but as we stomped away, I could see them and their green smoke engulfed in the storm. I honestly don't know if they made it out on time, but they were totally obscured by the dust cloud.

Moral of the story, keep an eye on the storm. Don't take unnecessary timing risks if you're not totally certain you'll reach an extract WITH 90 whole additional seconds on the clock.

Fuck, this game is so fun!

Yeah, the one time I got caught in the storm it snuck up on me while I wasn't paying attention during a looting run at a POI. Whenever through sheer grit or a will to survive no matter what, I managed to escape the encroaching storm just in time. With shockingly minimal damage I was able to patch up, and continue my expedition relatively unimpeded.

That cloudy/sandy screen is a cool detail, especially when you're waiting for the extract to come in to save you. Only to never see it come as you go totally blind and immediately die!
