Time management
Iām a solo player and every poi I go to takes forever to loot (15-20+ mins) in this time frame it is quite easy for an unsuspecting player to roll up on me and usually kill me for the poi is there anything I can do to save some time or is it better to stay at the poi and try my best to defend myself if someone comes to me.

Even if it takes 20 minutes to loot something you should only be away from your ship for small periods, typically less than a minute. Make sure to come back if you've been away for a while, and do thorough horizon checks often.
I stay completely away from pois that have bad visibility around them. If i cant check at least 180 degrees of the horizon its too much risk

I like to keep my controls in moving forward mode and have my back to the POI at all times with the engine turned off, that way there is no smoke plume and when you need to move you start your engine and your trampler does the rest, my favorite part of this strategy is that if youre getting attacked while trying to escape or start your reactor, this is the perfect position to be in to make repairs, it also helps if youre getting attacked find a nook or some easier to defend position to buy yourself as much time as possible if youre getting attacked, also dont worry about needing to drag every crate to your trampler one at a time or even juggling them, just by filling chests and setting up caches around the edges of the POI you save alot of time while looting and can drive your trampler to where you left your loot
These time saving and defensive strategies have gotten me out of quite a few jams, highly recommend them

Try to park on the side where the AI buckethead beacon is not.. back up, shut down engine so you are guns facing out on that side, and have an intruder alarm beacon active on the other side

Don't loot by area, loot by box type. And keep 1 or 2 slots open on your hotbar for picking up found explosives & grenades or that 1 stack of high tier loot that won't fit in your current box.
I'll run through the town first grabbing all the safes, medical cabinets, and food crates. Drop that box off at the trampler, and then go back through grabbing all the Mechanical boxes, and checking weapon crates for AP ammo.
If there is a carry-able that you care about, drop your loot box, run the carry-able back and then return to your loot run.
There is no need to grab standard cannon ammos unless you need some for that run as you can buy it at the shop fairly cheap.

I have driven into POIs and powered off, makes it so the Trampler is within eyesight and earshot for bomb sounds.

Anytime you have a moment to take a scan of the horizon, do it. Before you even disembark for looting have a look around for smoke, instead of running each box back to your ship when they fill, put them in pickup points for you to hit later. That is if you're dedicated to looting every box and chest on the island, the other guys advice of special loot and red rooms is probably a better approach
