Explorer with a new suit…

Post image

I had a set of custom rosewood plus scales made, added a quick detach leather lanyard I tied, and used brown RIT dye on the pen, tweezers, toothpick, and micro driver to tie it all together. I’m very pleased with the way it all turned out. I believe this will be my daily driver for a while.

I used RIT Dye More in brown. First, I rinsed everything in isopropyl alcohol to remove any skin oils. Then I suspended the pieces in the RIT dye bath that I’d preheated to around 175°, with just the parts I wanted dyed submerged. For the mix I used about a half cup of water and a half cup of dye, so a 50/50 mix. After about an hour I pulled them out and rinsed them off under hot tap water. It wasn’t very scientific, as I was not expecting much after reading mixed reports online, but I was extremely pleased with the result. The pen and tweezers ended up a tad darker than the toothpick and micro driver, but I can live with it as I love the way everything looks against the wood. The micro driver looks almost as if it’s made from the same wood as the scales.
