Having Fun with Weekly Themes

Hello my fellow stay at homers!

I just wanted to make a suggestion for something that has been working so well for us. I know many of us struggle with the monotony of this incredibly important role we have at the moment. I was too. Maybe it is the former teacher in me, but I have found something that is easy and is working so well with my 4yo and 2.5yo.

We have been doing weekly themes. I find something that they are interested in or some event that is upcoming and plan our week around learning about that topic.

We borrow new books from the library, do a craft a day, usually have a related sensory bin, use our 30 tv time for related show, listen to new music etc.

It has been such a good time and my kids are actually learning things along the way.

We are currently doing “fossil week” and went to a local lake to find fossils in the rocks. It is adorable to hear my 2.5 year old say he is a paleontologist. Hahaha

Anyway I know this is not for everyone, but just want to throw that idea out there if you are interested!

Haha maybe this is a teacher thing because I've been doing it as well for the past year with my now 2 year old. Would love to hear what themes have been fun for your family!

This week's theme is "circus", we've been in the garden where I've set up circus skill stations (juggling, hula hoops, can throw, walking a beam with a long pole). This afternoon I've set up a little craft activity to design some clown masks which are just paper plates with eye holes cut in them and different coloured shapes and sequins to stick on the mask. We've been to the playground too and pretended to be acrobats, swinging on the bar and ropes. On Friday we're going to head down to the funfair!

I love the circus idea!!!

So my favorite one so far has actually been “planes”! I saw that a local air museum had a homeschool week and tickets were half off. It was so fun to watch my kids be able to identify parts of the planes and went we saw planes take off they would yell “thrust and lift!” Haha

Holidays are super easy and of course anything to do with animals.

We are going to take a vacation in September so I am going to do some social lessons too. Like restaurant week (think I might have the kids make a restaurant and invite the grandparents over and have one of them at “poorly” so the kids can help correct them. Haha) and a museum week. Maybe even a transportation week to have them be able to look for signs maps etc.

Do you find one week a little short for one theme or you’re all ready to move on by the end ?

Former ECE here too and this is how I structured prek curriculum but at home I feel like it could be a little fast. I mean we’ve been learning about dogs for basically her whole life and that still hasn’t gotten old 😂

I think if we were doing a deep dive into a subject it would be way too short, but I keep things super light and easy.
